Intriguing question. We don't have enough info to make a good guess yet, but I'm inclined to believe the boy is real.

This game's most distinctive aspect is the idea of creating your own hero. I just don't see a hard-core Renegade Shep having this particular hallucination.

I admit to some very strong biases. First, I resist the notion that the last, best hope of sentient life in the galaxy is seeing things that aren't there. Second, if the boy (who clearly represents the future of humanity) is a vision, then this vision foreshadows that Shep is going to fail.

I'll look at the scenes again, though. I need to listen to what the boy says.

I'm pretty sure the boy is real, or the scenes lack gravity.

I'd like to think that Bioware's smart enough to make the scene interpretted both ways with equal merit.

For example, OF COURSE the boy is real-- it's our first real experience of lost innocence due to an unrelenting, unstoppable force. The boy is our first shown reason to absolutely hate the Reapers.

And yet, OF COURSE the boy is just Shepard seeing things-- this is the inner emotions of a man stretched to his mental limit, realizing just how inevitable the situation may actually be. The boy is never seen by anyone else, nor acknowledged by anyone else.

Personally? I don't think he's real. The soldiers don't acknowledge him despite him struggling to get on the ship. All other characters conveniently aren't looking with Shepard when he sees the boy. And finally, the boy visibly stares RIGHT BACK at Shepard right before...well, you guys know what happens. It's too many coincidences to not mean anything. The boy is Shepard's guilt and consciousness, as he struggles to keep his drive and mentality facing insane odds.

Yes I think it real alright. Using a kid is more of a symbolic thing which have been used in telling so many story when its come to Doom day stuff. Shepard must stop the cycle of extinction not just this once but forever, that's why the kid is important.

I like the way you think. Very plausible.

I'm of the opinion that the kid is a figment of Shepard's imagination, quite possibly a younger version of himself/herself (if the intro sequence, played as Fem!Shep, has the kid as a girl). There's gotta be a better reason why these games monitor how Paragon or Renegade you are besides giving you simply gameplay bonuses to each.

I'd almost bet money that Kid!Shep is there to show the player who Shepard was when he/she was little (which changes depending on your chosen background) and how he/she has progressed psychologically and emotionally since the start of the series (ie. if your actions are Paragon or Renegade and what big choices you made along the way).

While that would certainly be a twist to the story, I don't think this would be feasible. There would have to be multiple versiions of this kid. Skin color (cuz my latinoSehp was no little white girl, thank you), eye color, and facial features would certainly have to be taken into account so that it wouldn't look cheesy.

It's not all that hard to pull off. They already do it with the Shepard character model, and that one can be modded in a heck of a lot more ways then what they'd need to do to make it look like a mini-version of the player's Shepard.

My guess is that the reason the kid is always seen alone and noone seems to notice him is a psychological trick. It sort of gives Shepard the feeling that they have some relationship, since Shepard feels like (s)he's the only one seeing the kid. (S)He's the only one who seems to take note of the kid, and so Shepard feels like he failed personally when the kid gets blown to bits. He can't put even part of the blame on Andersson, because he wasn't in the room, and when he sees the kid boarding the shuttle, he notices that he is the only one, at that moment, who seems to care about the kid. All the more powerful a blow when the kid dies.

Also, to the people who think that it's just a younger version of Shepard:

You do realize that this (pretty major) twist would be spoiled in the intro sequence for everyone who has seen the kid (in trailers, not just leaks) and plays femshep in ME3 right? Not going to happen.

Isn't there confirmation that the boy shows up later in full view of everyone else and boards an escape pod or something to get off Earth?

I take it you haven't watched the leaked beta? It shows the entire prologue mission, at the end of which you can see a heart-wrenching scene of him trying to climb the shuttle in the middle of the seemingly oblivious crowd.
