I'd have to say Legion is number one for me. I also think TIM is good character we will have what he's like in 3 though before I say hes one of the best. I would also say Mordin, even though at first I didn't like him he later grew on me. Garrus I really like, but I don't think hes one of the best written characters.
Poorly written characters I would have to say are Liara in ME1 and Aria.

Udina and TIM. Characters who can get so many people's hackles up are clearly well-written.

For me it's either Legion or TIM. It's hard to pick between them. Mordin is quite well written aswell. I guess they're my top 3

Out of the squadmates..I'd have to go with Garrus and Tali first. In ME2 I can feel my Shepard greatful as ever to have them back, and I love seeing the transaction from ME1 to 2.

Next would be Wrex, he is like most Krogans with his attitude, but you can really feel the prescense of Wrex when he is around. Especially once you learn more about him, and see the position he is in in ME2. I don't know much about ME3 (Keeping it that way) but I hope ME3 doesn't fail him.

Kasumi would be next. Since Tali is my LI, she fills the role of that "Sister like" character. Even if she doesn't have dialogue wheel characters, I can perfectly imagine her and Shep gossiping a lot (To the point where Shep might want to leave in the middle of a convo some days x.x "I should go."

non squaddies.

Joker? All his lines, and Legion imitations.

Everyone needs a Conrad Verner in their life.

I think all the Krogan and Quarians were the 2 best written races, aftering meeting them on Tuchanka and Migrant Fleet. Talking to all the Krogan on their homeworld, made me want to explore Tuchanka entirely and experience Krogan life. (As Shepard obviously. I would never o.o)

Chakwas anyone? Not really one of the best written IMO, but I would love to hear more stories from her. Still love her though

Shouldn't this thread be in the character forum

Legion (insight into geth culture)
Mordin (willingness to do the dirty work but incredible/complex morals about it)
Ashley (subtle, nuanced view on species relationships rather than flat-out racism or lovey-dovey acceptance) - up to the ME2 Horizon encounter, but that reunion was quite railroaded.

Easily Mordin. By a mile. It's a shame that the dialogue wheel on his loyality mission is so fubar, but that's beside the point. His character is complex and engaging, and almost all of his lines are superb IMO.

You have forgot about one tiny thing man.............bold out the FUBAR,;).

LOL

It really is bad, isn't it?

Investigate -> Effects on Tuchanka
Shepard: YOU'RE A F*CKING ****, MORDIN!
:o

Investigate -> Pride in Work
Shepard: YOU'RE A F*CKING ****, MORDIN!

Legion, Wrex, and Mordin.

These are the characters I feel the strongest empathy towards.

Shepard, Liara, and TIM are also great characters, but their writing have serious glaring flaws.

Miranda, Jack and Garrus's characters derive mostly from their outstanding voice actors, rather than their writing.

My favourite characters too!

However best written I would have to say both Ashley and Kaidan are up there.

Each has a lot of depth, and I don't think they get properly acknowledged for it, especially Kaidan.

I like the way Kaidan is written, he makes sense as a character and is consistent. Also loved Mordin and Thane's characters for their unique PoVs, which I felt were well done.

Not to attack your opinion or anything, but talking to Thane makes me wish I could jump into the game and rip his self-contradictory BS "philosophy" to shreds. There are so many opportunities for Shepard to rip massive holes in the crap that dribbles out of Thane's mouth, but of course Shepard just acts all fascinated as if Thane is actually making sense. Urgh.

Okay that sorta did come out like an attack on your opinion, sorry. But I really think Thane was very poorly written.

If I had to break it down to one it would have to be Ashley. Probably my favourite LI in any Bioware game I played, one of my favourite female characters in any game and all in all just an interesting and well written character. At least in ME1, I desperately hope they do her justice in ME3.

Kaidan deserves more love, too. Mordin is great as well, and I actually kind of like Udina.

I think the two most well-written characters in the series so far are Ashley and Mordin. Ash because she's incredibly believable--she has all the faults and nuances that make her seem like a real person. Mordin because his dialogue is brilliant, and he's as hilarious as he is deep. His personal story arc alone is very thought-provoking.

Personally I think Ash's believability has more to do with her awesome VA than the writing...
Still, you gotta love that dialogue wheel when she spouts poetry!

I personally would say Jack, mostly because I've faced things vaguely similar to what she has and it has scarred me. I can look at the enormous difference between what I have suffered and what she has and be amazed at her sanity.

Aww, damn it. I was in a good mood after hearing that the leaked script was really good in the opinion of someone on BSN who can spell, and now you've gone and ruined it with depressing RL stuff.

Oh, don't be sad, I'm over it. Far more over it than Jack is. Think happy thoughts: Skyrim! Mass Effect! My Little Pony!

...I know that last one will put you in a good mood.

Ashley, she was the first character in the ME that, at least to me, felt the most believable.
Jack, it takes a special kind of writing to pull off that kind of girl.
Tali, it takes more than dem' hips that make her the most popular quarian in this universe.
The Illusive Man, it requires more subtlety that your average character.

I would say Legion just because he's unlike any other Geth. I kind of get the impression that he can feel emotions, especially when you ask him about why he's got your armour in ME2.

In my opinion

1.Tali. She is actually one of those character who feels most authentic. She has both bad and good traits in her.

2. Mordin. Just like Tali, Mordin's personality is both complex and easy going at the same time. He has a moral which is easy to catch up but at the same time as any normal person Mordin also have an intrinsic struggle. This makes him easy to like and dislike.

3. T.I.M. his personality is like his name which makes it intriguing to know more.
