Sovereign. He had palpable menace whenever he was on screen.

Wrex - Come on, it's Wrex

Grunt - He came off like a big meathead 13 year old who listens to metal and blows **** up with M80's. Which is perfect for a baby Krogan super-soldier

Jack - best romance ever if the Paragon path is followed. Looking forward to continuing things with her on a deeper level in ME3....what's that you say? Her name isn't Ashley, Tali or Liara so there's no hope?

Writing-wise, I've always loved Ashley, Legion, Mordin, and Wrex there. I really enjoyed the way those characters were written.

Oh, and how could I forget, Saren. One of my favorite antagonists.

In terms of a character arc, Garrus has the most impressive, and I also appreciate how his development is the most directly affected by Shepard.

Tali in Mass Effect 2 was pretty well written as well.

However, again I'd have to say Mordin was the best written overall character. Such wonderful depth and range in a single character. Its pretty great.

Legion and Thane are my favorites. The development of Garrus in ME2 was impressive. His character actually "felt" older and wiser. And you just can't have a party with out Grunt. I always take him with me to get Jack just so I can hear him say, " Oh, I wanna see this."

Mordin and Samara are best I felt. Jack is also good provided you romance her. Put a gun to my head though and its gotta be Mordin. His LM is the best written in game, IMO.

Seriously?

I enjoyed talking to Tali and Garrus in ME1, I thought they were very interesting characters in ME1 but I was very dissapointed with both in ME2.

Mordin is easily winning and for good reason- his conflict makes him the deepest character in the universe. Wrex is very likeable if you consider that to be well written. Otherwise not so much, his reason for joining Shepard as the Bioware warrior race is particularly uncompelling. And then Grunt comes along and does the same thing... Legion has the same thing to a much lesser degree, in that he's still very interesting but the biggest draw of his character is just how bloody adorable he is.

I sense that they tried to make Thane deep, and perhaps he later is. But I just can't accept his "I didn't do it/I'm a Hanar gun" while pitying himself and I just shut off.

It's hard to decide, but if anything, probably Mordin and Legion for me. Everyone in the ME series has things that make them strong characters, but those two just stood out to me more.

I think they did a good job with all of the characters. Just some seemed to have more dialog than others and some of them you had to romance to find out what they were like.

If they managed to make people hate and love a character, to me, it's well written. (Horizon does not count - it was bad bad bad writing making Ash and Kaidan react the same even though they had two different personalities in ME1).

Jack was a character I didn't like the first time I played, but after talking to her in different games, including one where male Shepard romanced her, I found her very interesting.

Mordin had me the second he started singing and Legion the first time he said "Shepard".

So if I can only pick one - I'm picking two with a third just because.
ME1 - Kaidan and Garrus and Ash
ME2 Jack and Mordin and Legion

Mordin for me, by a long shot. Great character, great development, great back story. He's so tied in with the ME universe for me - he's linked to Virmire through knowing Kirrahe, he's linked to the Genophage and he sings Gilbert and Sullivan!

Oh yeah I forgot Jack, she's very cliched but she's likeable and the deepest romance even if that depth is completely cliche.

I don't strictly like Ash but I have to admit she's deeper than Kaidan, especially with remarks like "I can't tell the Aliens from the animals" Interesting that you put Garrus up top but not below, did you like him better in ME1? I thought I was the only one.

Thane. :D The whole contrast between loving father/religious man and deadly assassin/unfeeling killer is fascinating... just hope he gets developed further in ME3. I'd like a better explanation of his diseases too.

There are some characters that have quite a few good moments, judging by the beta leak.

Also: Tali, EDI and...a special guest.;)

Sovereign, Jack, Grunt, Mordin.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't say that there are any POORLY written characters in the games, but some are much better written than others. Some get a lot of unnecessary elaboration/screentime when they're a little more one dimensional. Idk

Now that I really think about it, unfortunately almost none of the characters seems that well written. They are all pretty bland and have only a little depth to them, or none at all.

Wrex stands out as being the clear winner IMO.
