I hope not. Curing Thane kind of cheapens his character arc, kind of. I think there need to be limits to fan wish fulfillment.

How does curing him cheapen his character arc?

He was a husband, a father and an assassin with a penchant for reading before he came down with Kepral's disease. Curing him would only cheapen his character arc if he was a one-note character, if his illness was all there was to him.

That's a bit of an odd sentiment, that his disease = him. That certainly isn't true in real life and I don't see how or why it should be different in Mass Effect.

I expect that each of the love interests will have a situation where you can:

a) save them, but at the cost of letting many other innocent people/another squadmate die.

B) abandon your love, but saving many innocent civilians/gaining a big strategic victory.

I don't expect Thane to play a large role in ME3, due to the fact that he didn't have many months left to live after his prognosis, and ME3 is likely to take place 6 - 12 months after ME2. I believe that Bioware will indeed include a way to save Thane (it would be too much of a kick in the gut to Thane-lovers otherwise), but I won't be too upset if he dies, since Bioware was basically setting him up for the whole "tragic romantic death" line.

Players who romance Thane or become very fond of him tend to see his character arc as <Shep helps Thane find a new reason to live>. On the other hand, players who relate to him more superficially tend to see the role of Shepard in Thane's journey as <setting him free from his old demons before he dies>. For those players not seeing Thane go out in a blaze of glory might feel like not getting the emotional completion of his character arc. So beside the douches that just want to see Thane die cause it will make others cry, there are players who trully feel like his death has a meaning and will bring closure to both Thane and Shep. None of these interpretations is the right one / best one. Thats why both endings should possible depending on how you bring Thane to reconsider his will to live.

The reason players who romance Thane see his character this way is because from what Thane says, this is what has happened.  It's not really an interpretation or wishful thinking it's just the way it is.

Interpreting the other unromanced scenarios loyal and unloyal I don't see that either necessarily fits in with 'setting him free from his old demons before he dies'

A loyal Thane has been given reason to live by reconciliation with his son.  We do not know how this affects  his outlook but it seems like a good reason for him to want to live on.

An unloyal Thane is not at peace or free from his demons, he's returned to his battle sleep after losing his son again and is as good as dead already.

I really don't want it where he's cured. His whole story in ME2 was about how he was going to die and trying to make amends. If they would cure him in ME3 it would feel like to me, that his story was pointless in ME2.

You know, I really like Thane, but I hope that they don't take the easy way out with a miracle cure.
That doesn't even mean that they have to kill him, but I think his eminent death gave some depth definition to his character. It would also seem unrealistic to suddenly get a cure for him, when there has been no cure and he even SAYS that there won't be one in his lifetime.

To me, it would seem like deus ex machina and as though it would cheapen the whole situation.

We knew he was dying when we first made love. If that is the only way, so be it. It's only a matter of time until Kolyat gets Keprals... and Feren. All Drell are doomed unless the hanar do something useful for the first time in the series.

Kepral's is caused by exposure to humidity.  Unless Feron and Kolyat end up in a humid place for a long period of time they'll be fine.  On top of that the Hanar have been working to help the Drell with this problem since Kahje naturally has really high humidity.

Again, I support choices.  Giving Thane a treatment is not irrational.

The magical cure already exists, all he needs is a new set of lungs.

I don't want Thane cured because at time of recruitment he had 8-12 months left to live.

ME3 happens 6-12 months after Arrival....

at best he'd have a month or so left...

Getting him cured at such an advanced stage of the illness is why people call curing Thane a cop out. I would have no qualms if the best thing that could happen to him is a treatment that prolongs his life but that he can't get a cure because...well........the disease has progressed too much.

I think that if Shep 'manced Thane, he got the transplant he refused in the interim between ME2 and ME3...which should only extend his lifespan by a year or two...

if he DOES get cured in ME3, I hope he doesn't come out of the surgery a day later, ready for combat. He should be down with recovery time so in gameplay terms, he is out of the game whether he dies or not and....so it makes sense (since the doctors are going to have a harder time curing a patient that's weeks from death as opposed to a person with an early diagnosis)

I think that the Invictus mission where he goes and gets the cure isn't for him (since his time is almost up), it's for his people which goes with his "leave the galaxy brighter" philosophy.

So why do people think that Thane needs a compulsory death as opposed to his demise being the result of a choice?

Shepard defied death.  When a character dies and comes back you have raised the bar of what is possible within that universe.

Still. Death is death.

Besides, the Hanar are already working on a cure in ME2. Thane just doesn't think he'll live long enough to benefit from it. 'course, he can be wrong about that, and people with a strong will to live have a habit of living longer than expected...

This. I am hoping that there is a cost. I don't want some magical cure produced from the rainbows on Kahje. There needs to be some consequence to make it meaningful.

In the third game, there may well be a choice that a Shepard who romanced Thane will have to make, regarding some other form of treatment that Thane would not approve of, for personal (or even religious) reasons.                       This choice may either save his life by going wildly against his wishes, there fore damaging their relationship and possibly even causing it to end, or doom Thane to his early death but honor his wants and requests.                               (Either way, the tears will flow.)
