Unable to Install DAO

Hi guys, been waiting for weeks to play DAO and due to severe mobo issues had to wait for parts and time to get everything setup.  Finally did, and now I can't seem to get DAO installed.  It gets to 72.7% of unpacking env.rar and then tells me that "The Installation of DAO has Failed. A Data Error Has Occurred."

I'm running Windows 7 64, my C: is a 150GB WD Sata drive, GEForce 9600 GT, Asus socket 775 mobo, Intel Q9550.  This is a brand new install of Windows and a freshly assembled PC.

This is for the CE of DAO, too, that I got from the EA store.

So, suggestions as to what can be done?

There have been half a dozen matching threads today.  You need to SEARCH for those.

Here's one:  social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/77298/2#276509

From which, here's what I said:

At least half of all complaints on this subject are the same thing, and
it has been asked and answered with some regularity.  Your DVD drives
are dirty, or have firmware that conflicts with WinRAR (or something else
that EA used), somehow.

I tried three DVD drives here.  The first two were clean, but the install
aborted with each of them.  My oldest DVD drive, an old Sony, is the
only one that worked at first.  I used it and installed across my LAN.
I have another drive, a Plextor, that also worked, when I got around to
trying it.

The most common fix is copying everything to the Hdd and installing
from there.  This applies to the DVD copy, not any digital download, of
course.  But you can also beg, borrow, or rent an external DVD drive.

Along the way it seems you are suffering from CRC error or simply put disk read error. May I suggest that you copy the whole dvd to your desktop and try to install from there. If still it can not be copied then ultimately you need a disk replacement from your retailer.

Titius - whilst that would normally be a sensible proposal, there's a whole ton of people with CRC errors from both the DVD and download version, so its quite likely the fault lies elsewhere. I think the OP is referring to a download version, as it happens.

There is a manual workaround for the CRC issue - although not one that's guaranteed to get the game running error-free. Admittedly, since there seem to be a ton of game-breaking bugs relating to crashing, etc, even running with errors puts you on a level playing field with most other people. ;)

I've copied everything to the hard drive with the same error.

the search function on this forum seems to work about as well as this game install is going.  Which is to say, not very far very quick.

Get a replacement then install anew from there.

Replacement DVD?  Yeah, I was kind of suspecting it was a bad batch of discs. Gonna call EA store tomorrow (sine that's where I got mine from - haven't been able to find around here anywhere).

Or perhaps if you can, try to borrow an external dvd-rom and install? Could be a faulty dvd-rom but its a new assembled PC you may say but sometimes faulty hardware can be had which is not extra ordinary.

Even though it's the same dvd drive from which I installed my OS?  And if it was a faulty DVD drive, wouldn't it also give errors when copying the files from the DVD to the hard drive for the HDD install?

Yup, you're correct. Try to get a replacement copy, I hope that helps.

I would also recommend trying the manual workaround from my post above, at least to see if it works.

Its now solved the issue for several people, and points to a bug with the installer rather than the DVD / download.

Neither Vibius nor myself are saying there is a defect, other than the choice of tools that EA made in producing the DVD, but rather that a CONFLICT has repeatedly occurred that in many cases seems to involve specific DVD drives, causing an unnecessary abort of the install and false claim of Data Error.  I was unable to install to the PC I am using right now, with the DVD that's in it.  That DVD drive is still in it, and I can play the game, with its automatic disk check.

However, I was only able to install the game by going across my LAN here at home from a PC in a corner I use for more mundane activity than gaming.

Well, turns out the issue was either with my hard drive or my DVD drive, as I went and replaced both and was successfully able to install DAO. Thanks for your comments, guys.
