Ok I do NOT want to turn this into a debate. I am a practicing Christian (Episcopalian) however I have friends all of different religions so I'm not trying to start World War III here. However I'm curious as to why their is no mention of the modern day religions in the games (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, etc.). Is there a back story for this? Has human religion died out? What do you all think?

Perhaps I am just splitting hairs since its likely the producers just didn't think it was important but I was interested regardless.

Ashley Williams. That is all.

Perhaps they died out, you know...with the discovery of multiple species and humanoids with their own beliefs. Besides...Ashley did mumble something about God.

They have mentioned it very little in the games but much more in the novels. Many major world religions have survived but had to adapt to the realization that aliens do exist. Hell Christianity or at least Catholicism exists simply because the pope still exists.

Some people obviously believe in a god, but I think discussing specific, real-world religions would be opening a can of worms.

I think it's safe for an NPC to say "thank Allah" or something after surviving some crazy shiznit or whatevs.

According to the first book, most people in ME are atheists.

I personally didn't read it but it's what others have mentioned.

Much like modern day religion has evolved from hundreds of years ago, it furthered evolved as ME takes place hundreds of years in the future.

There's religion in the game, but you can't really expect it to reflect what you currently practice.

Doesn't the existence of the proteans and the mass relays and the citadel completely destroy the theory of creationism in the mass effect universe?

If you read the books they explain it kind of. I can't remember it exactly but the religions took a major hit when humanity discovered the ruins on Mars and ''proved'' that there was aliens in the universe. The First Contact War reinforced this and the religions are much weaker and not as big as before.

Religion died on Earth when Cerberus assassinated the Pope with poisoned rosary beads, true story.

It didn't go anywhere? There's still an active pope, amongst other religious holidays mentioned in the Daily News. Then there's Ashley, and her whole conversations about religion.

Its just a matter of, how much can you fit in the active game? You want the world to feel 'real', but also not come off like you're trying to force opinions down someone's throat. [Either atheism, or theism.]

So far I think Mass Effect has handled it quite well, although I'd love to hear more about some alien religions.

That's what I imagined would happen. And to be clear I don't expect Christianity to be intact. This is just a matter of curiousity.

The Asari believe in a God(dess). Ashley believes in a God. The Hanar believed the Protheans were gods. Shepard can say that s/he believes in God in ME1. Shepard has a dialog option in ME1 that states that the Alliance protects the rights of its citizens to be a member of any religion they choose. That is about it.

I think that religion is too varied to ever be depicted accurately in this game so Bioware simply gives us the option to say we're believers and allows us to role play his/her denomination and make moral choices that agree with our religious beliefs.

And for the record, I am an atheist and I have no problem with religious characters in "mature" video games.

Not exactly what Revelation says.  It only gets into the subject briefly:

Every major religion on Earth was rocked to its core [by the discovery of the Prothean ruins on Mars]. Dozens of new belief systems sprang up overnight, most of them based on the tenets of the Interventionary Evolutionists, who zealously proclaimed the discovery as proof that all human history had been directed and controlled by alien forces. Many existing faiths tried to incorporate the reality of alien species into their existing mythologies, others scrambled to rewrite their history, creeds, and beliefs in light of the new discovery. A stubborn few refused to acknowledge the truth, proclaiming the Mars bunker a secular hoax intended to deceive and mislead believers from the true path. Even now, nearly a decade later, most religions were still trying to reassemble the pieces.

and:

The revelation that humanity was not alone in the universe hadn’t just impacted Earth’s religions, it had far-reaching effects across the political spectrum as well. But where religion had descended into the chaos of schisms and extremist splinter groups, politically the discovery had actually drawn humanity closer together.

To be fair, the Catholic Church stopped teaching creationism about 60 years ago.

It's like asking "why are developers hiding Earth economy?". They don't, it just ain't important to the story in ME franchise.

Thank you! This is actually exactly what I was wondering!

I'd hazard a guess that the 'RL religions' were excluded for the simple reason that people playing the games would end up arguing over it.

Dick: "WTF? Shepard is a Christian?!?! I'd better complain bitterly about the exclusion of [insert other religion here]" *ragequit*

Much easier for the devs to create new religions, therefore eliminating the possibility of any angry comebacks or threats of discrimination-- Oh wait :/

it's 174 years in the future some religions don't even last that long, plus no one cares about human backstory, it's all about the aliens and their religions, gods and goddesses and cultures etc.

Then replaced the pope with a more pro human/Cerberus one that was less of a stickler about the Genophage. True story.

It's natural that in the future religion play a very small role in any civilized society... so it's safe to assume it died out in Mass Effect.
