Okay, a little hiccup there as I posted in general discussion first, but I've got that all straightened out so here we go again . . :

I'm on my fourth run through the game, so I'm still a relative n00b, and I'm wondering if I'm making any obvious mistakes with how I'm equipping my guys.  I would have asked this earlier, but I wanted to settle on my preferred NPCs first.  I'm about to leave Athkatla heading for Spellhold, so I'm just going to list what I'm using and I'd appreciate it if y'all would let me know if you see any particularly egregious errors or omissions . . :

*** I haven't entered Watcher's Keep yet, I'm saving it for when I come back so I can do the whole thing at once.

Main guy, Kensai 16
King Strom's helmet
Amulet of 5% Magic Resistance
Frostreaver/Belm
Ring of Human Influence
Ring of Gaxx
Cloak of Protection +1

Valygar, Stalker 14
Corthala Family Armor
Gauntlets of Ogre Power
Helm of Balduran
Periapt of Proof Against Poison
Celestial Fury/Kudane
Ring of Regeneration
Ring of Earth Control
Cloak of Non-Detection
Boots of Stealth
Belt of Inertial Barrier

Keldorn, Inquisitor 14
Red Dragon Scale
Gaunlets of Dexterity
Helm of Glory
Necklace of Form Stability
Carsomyr
Ring of Fire Resistance
Ring of the Ram
Cloak of the Sewers
Boots of Avoidance
Girdle of Bluntness

Aerie, Cleric/Mage 12/12
Robe of Vecna
Bracers of Defense AC3
Helmet of Defense
Metaspell Influence Amulet
Mace of Disruption +2
Arla's Dragonbane +3
Shield of Harmony +2
Ring of Acuity
Ring of Protection +2
Cloak of Displacement
Girldle of Fortitude

Nalia, Mage/Thief 15/4
Robe of the Good Archmagi
Gloves of Pickpocketing
Pale Green Ioun Stone

I'd say Keldorn would benefit more from a strength girdle than your Kensai PC, who will already have great THAC0 and damage bonus. The green Ioun stone is a better item for your PC than Nalia as HP doesn't matter so much for a mage in BG2 (well, except for getting out of PW:Kill range, but Death Ward does that). Also, Aerie might benefit more from the amulet of power than Nalia, considering the long casting time for most priest spells.

Are you leaving the 6th party space for Imoen? Or Sarevok?

When Vampires are around I give the Amulet of Power to the lead PC who can use it, he then equips Azurazor or the Mace of Disruption. I really like its ability to resist level drain. Spellcasters are rarely silenced for long anyway.

Ack! This is my first 'no helmets allowed' PC, and I didn't even think of using an Ioun stone -- I always thought of those as mage only. So that's an obvious flaw, thanks. I use Aerie's cleric spells mostly in a non-combat role until she gets more powerful, so casting time isn't much of an issue at this point, but thanks for the idea.

I used a six member party on my first run through, then dropped to five and I just prefer it. I drop Nalia for Imoen in the maze even though I have space for both. I feel like it's a more manageable party size and I don't feel like I'm missing anything. I toyed with dropping to four, but I kind of need Aerie and Nalia, and I like Keldorn being able to use Carsomyr so early. I don't think I'd miss Valygar really, but he's my favorite NPC so I don't want to drop him. Maybe one day. I didn't know you could get Sarevok as an NPC, but I haven't played past the end of SoA yet.

When I created the thread I was soliciting general advice, but I appreciate the situational advice about vampires as well, since I'm still too green to think situtationally for the most part. However, I thought the Mace of Disruption already protected against level drain, so I'm not clear about what benefit the Amulet of Power would add . . .

EDIT: Oh, about strength items, I was thinking my PC and Valygar should have them because they're getting more attacks per round than Keldorn, so it's kind of a multiplier effect . . .

You should upgrade your Mace of Disruption to version 2.0 .

Then Vecna should be with Nalia.

Only the improved version.

There is nothing wrong with having a stronger kensai, don't worry.

Done!  But I've got the upgraded Mace already . . .

Although, in the interest of full disclosure, I don't really use a ton of offensive magic with Nalia/Imoen either.  For the most part, they just hang in the back until needed, and only zap stuff that gets near them.  And if there's a big clump of monsters in the distance, I'll throw an area effect spell out there to get them moving towards me.  OTOH, I can't ditch them, because I need them to open chests/disarm traps, and there are a few major fights where I use magic more heavily . . .

Oh, and Blindness.  I like that a lot, but it's more for fun than really necessary . . .

In terms of who gets the strength belt, it's not necessarily a matter of who has more attacks, but but overall damage output and where it makes a bigger relative shift.

for example a kensai with natural 18/90+ strength (assuming you rolled to get a good strength here) has +2/+5 to hit and damage. a 17 str for keldorn only gets +1 +1 i believe (don't have the manual handy). so even if the kensai has 4.5 attacks, 19 str bumps up damage to +7 so you're looking at 4.5 * 2 extra damage = 9 damage/round. Even if keldorn gets 2.5 attacks, his damage will jump up +6 per attack so 2.5 *6 = 15 damage/rd. Plus you're 10% more likely to hit with the Holy Avenger dispel magic attack (which will be much more useful in the hard battles than the extra elemental damage from frostreaver, especially since your kensai will probably always hit except for a roll of 1).

Plus then you can move the Belt of Inertial Barrier to your PC, where the extra damage prevention will go further towards not dying to ADHW than on Valgyar.

You're missing a bunch of +1 items - at least two amulets and two rings. Keldorns and Valgyar can both use the +1 save and AC more than necklace of form stability, peript vs poison (except situationally), or ring of ram. (I believe you can stack a protection item with Helm of Balduran, but could be wrong since I usually allow multiple protection items, so this whole paragraph may not be useful).

Get Ilbratha (short sword in umar hills that gives 1/day Mirror Image) for your PC just for the mirror images, not to use.

If you kept the short sword from the sena sunei encounter, if you see enemies cast a hold spell at you, you can equip the sword in response to negate it. Same with something like Lilarcor's mind shield.

The Tuigan bow might be better for Nalia with its +1 attack per round, if her Thaco is low enough to hit consistently.

You should keep Azuredge on hand for your Kensai - if/when he starts getting hit, you can throw from a distance and get your strength bonus.

Consider keeping Flail of Ages (and upgrading to +4) for Valygar - eventually (late SOA and TOB) the enemies will make their saves vs celestial fury and the 33% slow from FoA has no save. Plus the later in the game you go the more mages you'll see and the elemental damage will be very useful vs stoneskin.

Ah, many useful tips. I got unlazy and did the math for the strength items since it's the second time they've been mentioned. My PC's Str is only 18/52, but it still works out where Keldorn benefits more from the belt, so I went ahead and gave it to him, moving the Belt of Inertial Barrier to my PC and Girdle of Bluntness to Valygar.

Keldorn and Valygar are prevented from wearing the protection items you mention by virtue of wearing magic armor.

Nalia's not super useful in combat, so I stick with Tasheron's bow just so I don't have to keep up with ammo. That's not a problem once I get through Watcher's Keep, but by then I have the Gesen bow anyway.

I do hang on to Azuredge and Flail of Ages, as you mention, but I don't switch to them often. I'll try them more frequently on your advice. The short swords you mention may be a little more micromanagement than I'm currently interested in, but I appreciate your pointing out the strategies and I'll keep them in mind for the future.
