I actually prefer the Grey Warden option to either the Circle or indeed death options. I just think her hardened nature at the end of Act 3 after being a Warden, makes her a much more interesting character.
Letting a loved one die for the sake of the story.......

It is a toss up which life would be better for her. With the Grey Wardens there is also the gradual deterioration of the mind and nightmares, which seem to occur even between Blights because Anders alludes to having them. If she had had to remain all her life in the Circle in Kirkwall, then the Grey Wardens probably was the better option, but as it turned out, you get to free her from that and she is then a stronger and more confident mage than before, so I feel that she is better off not a Grey Warden, particularly since she seems to have an admirer in Sebastian and the feeling seems mutual.
I have never let Bethany die. I tried it once with Carver but still felt really rotten about it, even though he was a pain. There was a certain sort of bonding with Sebastian, since he lost all his immediate family too, which is probably why that Hawke ended up romancing him. I must admit I could always see Leandra's point of view - why risk both children on the trip, although it did make more sense taking Bethany because of the constant risk of discovery. So unless you have a really good reason for taking Bethany with you without Anders in tow, personally I'd avoid it.

I actually found it interesting to have pro-circle mage around for once. I decided to put her in the Circle for my canon playthrough. It was a constant worry on my Hawke's mind, but as the player I knew she enjoyed the life to an extent. Dramatic tension and personal ease, a compromise.

it's so funny that everyone has so little dispute about what the best fate for Carver is, but argues so much about Bethany! i loved my poor baby brother to pieces and actually cared where he ended up. i had so little attachment to Bethany as a character that it wasn't funny. that being said...
i make her a Circle mage, if i side with mages because she flourishes (i don't care much what she likes, just what she's good at) and she ends up free in the end anyway. i kill her off if i side with templars. it's just better if she's not around to see that and it makes Hawke seem like less of a hypocrite if she doesn't have that mage family thing going on in the last act. plus, kidnapped LI? how is that not hawt?

When in doubt, do what makes sense for the character. For the most part I've left Bethany home because I approached Hawke as wanting to protect Bethany. Bringing her into the deep roads, something more dangerous then they'd ever tried before, didn't make sense from that point of view.
Though difficult, try and think about how Hawke, as you've played him, would think if he didn't know she was going to live or die on the deep roads expedition (or become a Grey Warden).

Another view can also be this: Once I killed off Bethany on a pro mage play through because I felt like spending life protecting your sister and then have her die in your arms made Hawk more driven to give the mages freedom, something Hawk's family was about to the core. Many people are driven by loss to do something to change the world they felt contributed to the loss of a loved one in the first place. When Hawk says they are taking Bethany to the deep roards, Bethany says to her Mother it is either that or the Templars and she's allowed to kill the Darkspawn. So in away, the Templar's could be seen as what really killed her for driving Hawk to keep her safe by keeping her with Hawk at all times. By the time I killed Meridith, I really felt like Hawk was thinking, no one will ever know the pain I carry over my Sister's death again. Hiding her is what lead to her death and no family should suffer due to magic. While I typically make her a Warden now, I really felt the pro mage play through with her dying was one of my more driven games.

I Like Cats And wrote...
Here's my dilema.... I'm doing my mega-canon and have layed out just about all my decisions except one.
I'm trying to decide whether to take Bethany down with me to the Deep Roads (where she will die) or to have her join the Circle of Magi. On one hand you get a Hawke who has lost ALL of his close family with only his LI as a companion which seems cooler knowing he eventually rises up and becomes an epic hero........or you get to enjoy the company of Bethany (something I actually value, that wasn't sarcasm).
So people you guys should make some points to sway me. Also let's discuss other moral dilemas.
People die for the sake of stories all the time.
Look at Hughes from Full Metal Alchemist. Or Dumbledore and Snape from Harry Potter. Or Obi Wan and Yoda in Star Wars original trilogy.

whoa whoa whoa... Bethany will come back in act 3 if she is a warden? I was so hurt when she callously left Hawke at the end of act 2 I was all like "Bethany, Hawke loves you! Your the only family she has left why are you so eager to leave her in the middle of a battle? Hawke was crushed not that she was leaving but that she seemed so cold about it when they were best friends their whole lives and Hawke would have died to protect her baby sister. So now I may get her back and she will tell me why she was being such a dick?

Yep, Bethany will definitely come back to help you and it's great because she says something like "sisters together again", if you agree to accept her help. Also, if you do the Nathaniel Howe quest in Act 3, you'll see Bethany then too.
