As stated, the config utility won't start (or crashes); I've just created a fresh install of the game in Windows 7 using the mod Jade Empire in Style. This prevents me from playing a single game. :(

My computer is a Dell Studio laptop (unsure of the exact model number) with:
  • Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
  • Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 Processor @ 2.00 Ghz
  • 3 GB RAM
  • ~120 GB free space on the drive I installed it.
Any suggestions would be very helpful.

I haven't succeeded in making the Config Utility work either, but it doesn't seem to be needed. If you start the JadeEmpire.exe directly - instead of via the Launcher - it works fine. In case it doesn't, you could try to run it in WinXP compatibility mode and/or as an Administrator. That should do it.

There are also two other tricks that - according to some people - might work too:  If you have a newer Bioware title like Mass Effect installed, replace the SystemInformation.xml from Jade Empire with the one from that other game. You could also try to open the SystemInformation.xml in a text editor, delete everything and save the file again. Personally I could not make these suggestions work, but others apparently have. It depends on your hardware, I suppose...

I bought and successfully installed/ran Jade Empire Special Edition on a Windows 7 Professional PC last weekend. The 'fix' I used to was to create a new SystemInformation.xml file (because Windows 7 doesn't seem to create this file during the installation process) in the C:\\Program Files\\Jade Empire\\data directory (amend according to where you installed JE).

The trick is, you must run notepad.exe as administrator; it doesn't work if you just run NotePad from the Star Menu shortcut. You'll (usually) find notepad.exe in the C:\\Windows directory. Just right-click on the file and select the 'Run as administrator' option. Just click FIle | Save and name the file as SystemInformation.xml in the data directory. Close NotePad and then run JE as normal.

My fix originally came from http://blog.chase.ne...e-on-windows-7/ if you're interested (although it was originally written for the Steam install whereas I had the disc installation but it's all good.) :)

Sounds logical, but even with that trick JadeEmpireConfig.exe still crashes on me. JadeEmpire.exe runs fine regardless, though.

I stand by what I said before: If you can get the Config Utility to work, good for you! If not, never mind! It's not essential.

Almost everything that you can modify in the config utility can be done in-game with the exact same results. And for those options which aren't available in-game (such as "disable cutscenes" and "disable logos") there is always the .ini file, editable with any text-editor (0 is "No", 1 is "Yes").

So the config utility is not only non-essential, it's not needed at all.
