Continued from social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/181/index/8649849

Merro (cavalier, Gate70) and Savvy (blade, Grond0) celebrate their journey through the sword coast rather too well and wake up in a distant slammer. Imoen breaks them out and then runs off.

They arrived with 380k unlevelled xp each but consoled back to 161k with BG1 xp for spells.

There is an unprecedented amount of resting in this jail-break. Some laughter too, such as the time Savvy webbed a harmless group of goblins and immobilised both protaganists. Or when both stunned by a mephit. Or when Merro triggered a fireball trap capturing Savvy in the blast radius.

Merro has grabbed the sword of chaos, while Savvy offensively spun a vampire into the ground. On their way out they realise how lucky they are to escape; unlike Minsc and Jaheira who face an eternity behind bars.

No deaths so far.

Did you note the webbed death on werewolf island. My fault then as I switched weapons without mentioning it. His webs seem very hard to resist, stopping lycanthropes, goblins and cavaliers with ease.

What he didn't mention was that Merro rushed off up the corridor leaving Savvy without armour to confront an army of goblins (his excuse was that the goblins weren't there a few seconds earlier, but who would believe thatPosted Image).  There's also a noticeable lag between Merro actually moving and appearing on my screen so I thought he was still safely at the other end of the corridor - in fact he had hurtled back just in time to find himself in a sticky situationPosted Image.

Yep.
History is written by the victors, or the reloaders.

I missed that one actually.

I can see why you are reluctant to try a duo No Reload though: the Savvy Web Factor is a difficult thing to contend with. It's like having a Wild Mage by your side, except he's a (supposedly) intelligent Bard. :P

The one in the dungeon really made me laugh. I was just imagining Merro happily chunking when..

Savvy: Casts Web- Merro

Merro: "What are you doing! Don't you see me? And they're fracking Goblins!"

Goblins: (break free) Raaah!

Merro: Nooooo!

I don't know why but that gives me the giggles.

Cheers,

A.

Btw. And I think it goes with out saying this is all good natured teasing. It would be a privilege to fight by Savvy's side I'm sure.:)

I've crafted an item especially for Merro Gate. Let me know when he'd like to take delivery. I'd recommend sooner rather than later...

I'll have you know that Savvy had already decided to shift his spell book from web to stinking cloud.  Although the former is normally a much better bet in my experience the latter is more suited to the oddities of a cavalier.  Now, with the help of a friendly multi-dimensional genie, that would appear to be no longer necessaryPosted Image.

Understood. This is all in fun of course. Again: I think it would be awesome to run in multiplayer with Savvy- Merro as well.

I'm just jealous. :(

Nice mod but I'm still wary after the ankheg girdle combo.

Grond0, just wondering if cavaliers are immune to cloudkill, death fog, etc. Only one way to find out.

Savvy the blade and Merro the cavalier.

Monday
Time to sell some loot and grab some bags. We hit the circus, then speak to Gaelan Bayle. We are attacked by Cohrvale and Breig, and beat them down only for daylight to break our BGT session has crashed at every dawn/dusk movie so we have to reload and play the movie before connecting up again.

Cohrvale and Breig get a second death then we head into the Copper Coronet to deal with Lehtinan and rest for the night.

Tuesday
The next day we free Hendak. Freeing slavers proves more difficult, with Merro being held by hobgoblins in the sewers, then triggering a colour spray trap twice. They kill two yuan-ti and a group of mages before Merro foolishly perishes in an acid trap carefully avoided earlier. Reload to face the yuan-ti and mages again.

Merro is having a BAD day, showing himself to the mages. Luckily he retreats in time and this time they succeed.

We decide to help Nalia but end up helping Renfeld instead. This ends up with us killing two mages and their creations then delivering an assassin to Xzar.

Savvy picks the pockets of Ribald and Tolgerias at some point.

Then we head to the de'Arnise keep and kill a few trolls. A yuan-ti mage confuses us while under attack from trolls but we claw our way to victory and decide to call it a night.

Looking at the stats, Savvy has about 75% of the chapter kills/xp. This about sums up tonight, been a slog for Merro at level 9 and a good run from Savvy at level 12.

Savvy the blade and Merro the cavalier.

Shots at end of session. Merro took 3 wis tomes, 1 dex, 1 con, 1 cha in BG1.
Posted Image

Savvy took 1 str and 1 int tome.
Posted Image

The de'Arnise hold is our first stop today, taking on six golems and then eliminating Torgal.

Then we solve the Bridge district skinner murders dawn/dusk movie crash means we have to do this twice and head to the promenade where we aim to help a hapless victim deal with Del and her vampires. Savvy casts a spell without thinking, his second offence, and we are faced with cowled enforcers. Time to run, leaving the vampires to feed in peace.

We head to Trademeet and on to a druid grove. The path leaves us to a troll mound, where we carefully deal with a spirit troll and spectral troll. Then we pick apart the remaining trolls one by one. The last two are together, and disrupt a healing spell to shred Merro. Reload

We clear the mound on the second attempt, and kill some more trolls and lycanthropes. Then we rest and kill a hostile group of druids, kill some more trolls to loot a tower and Merro glugs an oil of speed. This is enough to take us through the rakshasa, spore colonies and final trio of druids. Faldorn refuses to fight us but Cernd is outside and tears her apart with three savage hits.

Back in Trademeet we help Tiris and kill the pair of skindancers, then clear the feudal tomb and return an amulet to the mayor. With the Dao djinn gone we are able to purchase a few items of interest.

Savvy is retaining the edge in kills.

Oh come on now. That was exactly as described. I repeatedly told you that it would be hideous, and you still demanded proof. You got exactly what you asked for: proof...

In the interest of full disclosure, I'll note that the Pro Savvy Scroll wouldn't necessarily keep Merro safe if Savvy decided to cast via scroll. It's basically a short duration Pro Magic Scroll which only covers the Bard casting levels, 1-6.
Anyhoo. That's enough about the scroll. I'm sure the Cavy/Savvy duo will do just fine without it.:)

Cheers,

A.

Btw. Nice acquisitions in Trademeet.

Savvy the blade and Merro the cavalier.

Watchers Keep. Merro dies from a deadly trap, reload. Savvy dies on the same trap despite mirror images reload again. Merro dies on an earlier trap he survived previously reload. Savvy dies again and Merro pays to raise him. We clear the first level of the keep but leave the statues for later some are missing.

Back to the city to pay Gaelan Bayle and speak to Aran Linvail. We fail to save Mook from the attentions of Lassal, then get attacked by a second vampire called Parisa. She drains Merro down to level 2 before Savvy uses a wand to kill her.

After dealing with two defectors and their guild contact we agree to storm the vampire lair. Savvy hands Merro the Amulet of Power and a few vampires are killed, until Merro retrieves the mace of disruption. He suggests they upgrade the mace as it will only take moments.

Savvy agrees, becoming an unwitting packhorse for 200lbs of illithium and 200lbs of fake alloy as either encumbers Merro. A reward for the head of Neb the child killer and a second reward for the tarnished alloy are not enough to convince Cromwell to upgrade the mace so a few items including a helm of glory are sacrificed at the thieves shop. Even Merro has got bored of this "brief" interlude.

Back in the vampire lair Merro uses the improved mace to wreak havoc, but in the final blood room Savvy gets dominated and killed. Merro fights on, killing the last pair of fledgling vampires and four other "things". He throws open the final door to receive a challenge from Lassal, then stashes the equipment dropped by Savvy.

He returns to a temple, only to find he cannot afford to raise Savvy. On to the promenade where he sells Azuredge, Belm and a few other items to purchase a rod of resurrection.

They return to the lair and re-equip. Savvy asks where the Amulet of Power is. Back at the promenade, meaning we have to continue carefully until we can retrieve it. Savvy heroically insists on continuing, even luring Lassal out and using offensive spin to haste his way to safety behind Merro.

Lassal is soon spiked, leading to a more deadly encounter.
Posted Image

We celebrate by dealing with Pai'na, then onto tombs where there is no sign of the book of Kaza or the Nether scroll. We decide to have a think about what to sort out next.

2 necessary reloads and 1 which we should have continued.

Savvy the blade and Merro the cavalier.

Our session starts with a reload when attacked by vampires in the promenade. They are no real threat until Savvy summons the cowled enforcers with his unlicenced casting and both groups remain there despite us leaving and resting. Was just going to get annoying as they were on the entry point.

We retrieve the Amulet of Power and head to the Umar Hills. The shadow dragon looks too much for us to handle so we deal with the altar first.
Posted Image

Then we backtrack for the dragon. Savvy's spells are starting to count but Merro wimps out killed, reload. Merro suggests returning later but Savvy feels confident. This time Merro adds an oil of speed to his buffs and moves away to heal before returning for the finale.
Posted Image

A lich is hidden in the Crooked Crane, so Merro iMOD's it. The undead in the graveyard district are treated the same way, then we decide to collect the silver pantaloons. As we deal with the real kidnappers Savvy casts another spell in the city and the cowled enforcers appear again.

We hide inside the house, and lure a caster inside. We then head outside, only to find three more casters round the corner. After a brief communication error Savvy said he could do with a potion but Merro thought it was a throwaway comment and not an urgent request Merro gets incapacitated and Savvy dies. Golems, stalkers, guards and enforcers are fighting each other and Merro survives. He starts to stash his companions equipment before realising he has a rod of resurrection.

After Savvy is re-equipped we call it a night. The pantaloons can wait.

Savvy the blade and Merro the cavalier.

Lord Jierdan has a job for us. We start by killing some creatures that turn out to be nights. Garren Windspear takes us in, only for his daughter to be kidnapped. We decide to rescue her.

On the way we return the dryad acorns, then Merro is held by a shaman hobgoblin. Savvy uses web, fireball and offensive spin to just keep the cavalier alive.

We clear the area, then kill hobgoblin archers in the next corridors. A few golems are tough, then Savvy tries Daystar for the first time.
Posted Image

We clear werewolves and a water elemental, then drop a tough opponent.
Posted Image

Merro cuts a deal with Firkraag, only for Conster to kill him FOD? Reload.

This time Merro uses the FoA to slow and disrupt Conster. With the prisoner freed, all that remains is for us to help Samia. Six genies and a beholder are cut down, then we extinguish a guardian and retrieve a paired sword and shield.

Savvy sends a golem and ogres back the way we came in case Samia betrays us. She does exactly this, so we kill her and start on her companions. Savvy gets confused, while Merro can only reach Kaol with Lilacor. He hacks down two sets of stoneskins then helps Savvy deal with Ferric Ironblade and Chak.

A good deal of inventory juggling follows, with the two adventurers managing to stash everything of value for once.

Terrible lag on my part, noticable when typing as every other word had transposed characters. Not sure how badly this affected Grond0. Have read that the game works better on Linux with a FAT32 partition than the EXT4 I'm using, so considering re-partitioning and trying it.

EDIT have split a 64gb partition into 2 and copied the game over. Seems to load, hopefully will run better.

The lag was pretty bad, but I'm getting better at interpreting the reality behind it. It was amusing fighting the golems next to the air elemental. Two stone golems were being blocked from crossing the bridge by a bigger one, but you couldn't have known that from the screen positions. Sometimes the big golem was shown behind the stone golems and sometimes right over on our side of the bridge!

It was indeed finger of death from Conster - that was the only spell I noticed him get off, so a bit unfortunate to be fatal.

Savvy the blade and Merro the cavalier. A day of reloads.

Paladin quests. We take two attempts at helping the paladins in the Umar Hills when they turn hostile after running into Savvy's scorcher. Likewise, two attempts rescuing the girl as the assassin was too quick the first time. A potion of speed and offensive spin worked the second time.

Merro borrowed some armour off Keldorn, and we continued a bit further. A few nasties were encountered but nothing that buffs couldn't deal with.
Posted Image

Lich bones.
Posted Image

Firkraag also took two attempts. On the first attempt the free action armour prevented an oil of speed from working and he was easy pickings for a hasted red dragon.

Savvy suggested changing armour but Merro only had the one set. He took it off anyway and fought without armour. This allowed him to run when targeted and return to hack away with the Dragonslayer sword.
Posted Image

Afterwards Merro discovered he could have put the armour back on and remained hasted.

On to Kangaxx. Savvy had to knock his door, so we fled from more cowled enforcers. On our return Kangaxx gave us half a dozen or so lessons before we agreed to return later for him.

Success.

On to the Unseeing Eye. Merro gets stunned by a lich and shredded by undead before entering the lair reload as didn't think to ask Savvy for an arrow of dispelling.

The Unseeing Eye is soon dead so we deal with Mekrath, killing him when he turns to slavery.

Savvy the blade and Merro the cavalier.

Mind Flayer lair. We tear through this, Savvy getting drained to intelligence 9 but Merro not getting hit once.

Our final destination for the night is a Planar Prison. We work our way east until Savvy is chaos'd by a group of mages. Merro dispels with Carsomyr, only to be chaos'd. Savvy escapes and tries to return the favour with an arrow, but misses and the cavalier falls to greater yuan-ti attacks. Reload.
Posted Image

Merro buffs more for a second attempt, dropping a wyvern before they expire. Full buffs see the Master of Thralls quickly chopped down but Savvy has been held.

Merro is fully buffed so continues in to the warden while Savvy is held.
Posted Image

The remaining mages manage to confuse Merro again but Savvy has recovered and hits with an arrow of dispelling. The remaining enemies are soon picked off.

Edit. Merro is level 16, Savvy 22. Chapter XP is 42% and 58% so the bard is still ahead but the gap has reduced slightly (was 33% and 67% earlier).

Savvy the blade and Merro the cavalier.

Today starts with tidying up loose ends. Captain Dennis. Valeria. A guarded compound.

On to the planar sphere, Valygar guarding the entrance while we explore inside. Merro gets confused by halflings but can be left alone to wreak havoc. He is killed in a fire chamber lack of buffs and lack of care, easily dealt with at the second attempt.

Savvy is held by a demon outside the sphere but Merro has summoned a deva and manages to kill off the demon and minions. The next two demons are much easier, and the planar sphere shudders back into the city.

Stats, Merro clawing back some of Savvy's lead in the chapter?

@Gate70- What are your thoughts on the Firecam Plate? It's tempting, but it also seems like a good way to get yourself killed...

@Grond0- Have you considered using Jan's Armor on Savvy?

Gate70 did suggest using some of Jan's things. I partly haven't done so because when playing solo I'm strict about that and don't recruit any NPCs even temporarily, but that wouldn't apply in this run.

I have considered it briefly - presumably you're talking about using the rat form in conjunction with Jan's armour as the armour wouldn't do much good on it's own. In a no-reload game I would certainly have suggested that Savvy should be the lead character quite a while ago (keeping the PC safer behind) and the rat / armour combination would then be effective in many combats. However, the style we're playing at the moment is not intended to be risk-free, so the combination would make less sense. I'll keep it in mind for a future run though!
