I'm extemely bad at playing them as well.

Anyways, I like the dual weapon mastery talent, but I've come to forgoe it in playthroughs. I know that daggers are faster etc. etc. But is there any merit to say, equipping a weapon like the biteback/Meric's blade, for their power and benefits in the OFF hand using dual weapon mastery, while using a dagger in the main hand to keep the quick backstab animation.

i think duel weapon mastery is more suitable for a dw warrior. i always dw vesheille. another favourite is duncan sword and dagger. give you good stats and good abilities against darkspawn and dragon.
duel wielding mastery is more important to warriors coz they can't backstab, therefore to give them a higher damage per hit coz of full size weapon.
playing with rogue, i think you should try using bombs, poison and traps to make your rogue play a better and more satisfying one.
my last rogue playthrough, i can almost solo the whole origin using bomb, coating and traps.. more fun than just auto attacking anyway.

I sometimes go against the prevailing view and equip my rogue with two swords (after getting DW Mastery). Seems to work fairly well with a talent such as Punisher.

However, when building a rogue that way I have the mage keep Telekinetic Weapons sustained all the time. This boosts the armor penetration of all melee weapons being used in the party.

A sword in one hand and a dagger in the other can work quite well, too. Depends a lot on the particular dagger and particular sword that are being used.

My best combatant so far (a "Big Deal") was a Rogue with Dual Weapon Mastery. Of course, I only put the bare minimum into Dexterity, and pumped the rest into Strength (mainly for armor), Constitution (mainly for hit points) and Cunning (for everything else). Momentum makes attack speed a moot point as far as I can tell, and Flurry is very handy.

Of course, if you have a really awesome dagger or two, two swords isn't as important.

I think that the real root of my success at this was due to the fact that with a Rogue on the front lines, I didn't need to carry around Leliana or Zevran to get killed all the time, and I could bring another Warrior or Mage instead. Though some of the DLC equipment really helps.
