You heard me.. was on the verge of breaking the keyboard and wishing David W. the best things for his mother.. but i finally did it, with the only permanent death being Keldorn (which i was gonna replace anyway with Sarevok).

If anyone else has huge problems with that fight, i can try and break it down for u.

My party, all of which hovered around level 20, consisted of:

Me - Kensai/Mage
Korgan
Keldorn
Viconia
Edwin
Imoen

In the first phase where you fight him and the Trials minions, the biggest factor is preserving all your important spells for the last phase. Before u activate the last Bhaal Tear, make sure to do absolutely all the necessary pre buffing. All useful potions gulped, summon a planetar, 2 mordenkainens, 2 aerial servants, improved hastes etc. Also i like to use Simulacrum and cast the Protection from Magic scrolls on Keldorn/Korgan.

When Irenicus is done with his speech, quickly proceed to the bottom right with all your party, except your summons. Send your summons the other way and downwards to intercept  and keep busy Wrath Sarevok and The Sword of Greed, while you go and try to dispatch the Shadow Dragon asap. 2 Breaches and a Lower Resistance are enough to take down his buffs. Have True Sight on Keldorn always. Afterwards, dispel and breach the Orb, he is rather easy to kill without buffs on. Make sure u don't get level drained on your mages/clericsduring this fight, otherwise reload.

Once you are done with the first 2 minions, comes the harder part. The Sword can only  be killed by magic missile and Flame Strike (or Wand of the heavens). It's good to have minor sequencers with magic missile beforehand, this way u can take down the sword fast. Also now is a good time to use a couple of simulacrums or project images. Take down Sarevok last by simpling hitting him with your fighters. Once Irenicus is the only one left, he is easy to kill in this form, but don't rush it. Take the time to re buff all your heroes before you take him down. Stoneskins, Mirror images, oils of speed, etc.

When you beat him, the game autosaves and you begin the next and final phase, which is also by far the hardest fight in SoA.

You need quick reflexes here, as there is a slight moment where u can pause and cast spells before Irenicus initiates his second speech. This small window of oportunity will prove to be just the slight edge that u need to win an insanely hard battle. Prep up with a Planetar, mordenkainen, haste, true sight and a Storm of Vengeance.

When the battle actually begins, try to do a Holy Word with the planetar and send all your fighters to focus fire the two Glabrezu demons, as they die the quickest and don't have Fire Shield like Balors.

Around this point, Avatar Irenicus will cast Time Stop. This is 95% of the reason it took me 6 hours to defeat him. On Insane he deals an average of 60 damage to my heroes, and he has improved haste on him too. So just hope that he hits an unimportant target like Planetar or any other summon. Make sure u have at least 2-3 more planetar spells available (<3 Edwin). If he starts whacking away at your heroes and kills them, reload.

Very soon after he casts his first time stop, he will cast his second and last Time Stop. So proceed to get a few more summons out and try to stay out of his way with your heroes until it ends. Always make sure to have stoneskin and mirror images on your mages (and stoneskin contingency at 75% of health, if u do it at 50% health it generally won't activate in time, he just insta kills u).

Use the Planetars Heal ability to keep themselves and your fighters alive. Use Rod of Ressurection on dead heroes. After his time stops are gone, u can start using your own. Time Stop with Edwin or your main mage (make sure Keldorn True Sighted and dispelled the demons before this) then Improved alacrity then unload all your spell strikes on the demons (i used Pierce Shield, Ruby Ray, Warding Whip, Pierce Magic, Breach) and a Spell Strike or Pierce Shield or Irenicus. You will take damage very fast during this fight, so make sure to pull back the badly injured heroes, heal them and send them back again. For me personally, my main char did a ton here, fighter/mage is probably the most useful class in this fight.

Another super strong spell to use against the Balors and Irenicus is Energy Blades. I had it on both my main char and on Viconia, tons of DPS after the spell protections went down. Hardiness is also nice on the fighters to last a bit longer vs that crazy Slayer.

After u manage to beat the 4 demons, use all your summons to distract and draw aggro from Irenicus, while u get your most likely injured and in very poor shape party back in business. Heals, ressurection, rebuffs etc. After that,  you can confidently take him on. Dump all the spell strike spells u have left on him and he shouldn't be a problem afterwards.

Even though this fight was immensly hard (for me at least), i felt a strong sense of satisfaction afterwards, something which i haven't felt in awhile when playing a video game.

Oh and another thing, i'm very curious if anyone did this fight and won under the No Reload Challenge. I would be very curious how it could be possible, because to me it seems pretty much impossible. You need to rely on a ton of luck that Slayer doesn't chunk half your party during his time stop frenzy mode.

Note: I don't use item enhancing mods or tweaks. So no Item Upgrade mod etc.

Nice work! And congrats!

As for SCS No Reloads, there have been a few. Perhaps viewing them may give you some ideas if you'd like to give a No Reload a go.

In the last month or so, Wierdo did a party run with SCS-Tactics Improved Irenicus. There were some item enhancements/tweaks involved there- nothing unbalancing in light of the circumstances though to be sure. It was a very well fought battle.

I also did a solo Stalker with SCS scripted Irenicus (Skipped the Shattered One battle because that can be awkward for a solo Warrior. I also skipped the Improved Fiends so it wasn't terribly difficult actually. She only got into trouble when I made a colossal error.). I intend to do the Improved Fiend+SCS Scripted Irenicus fight in my current Undead Hunter Solo.

There have been a number of others before.

Good hunting in ToB!

Best,

A.

Hey Alesia, thanks for the reply!

I'm definitely considering a No Reload Challenge after this with SCS installed, but i'll probably have to uninstall some of the difficulty mods like Smarter Dragons and Demons, seems too daunting for me at the moment to take on Firkraag in Chapter 2 or Irenicus in Hell with just 1 chance to succeed.

Did you and Wierdo also play on Insane? Or Core Rules?

Cheers

I play on Core. I find doubling damage to be an uninteresting way to increase difficulty. I prefer adding tactical components and imposing restrictions to achieve balance.

The only times I've played with the difficult slider have been in the final Ascension battle and the Questpack Beholder Lair. In those cases, the slider does more then double damage.

I'm pretty sure Wierdo was on Core as well.

The fight would be more difficult on Insane no doubt. Again, good work!

Anyhoo. If you do get around to trying a No Reload, do feel free to post on it. I'm sure many would enjoy reading you adventures.

Best,

A.

@Alesia thanks for mentioning Wierdo's battle with Irenicus in Hell!

I played on core rules as well (but max HP for both characters & monsters). Seems to make the most sense.

It was possibly the hardest battle of the whole SOA-TOB game, considering all factors like what level the characters are at.

At the beginning of the second stage of this battle, try to remember to cast PfMW and/or invisibility, hardiness etc on your main character (if possible) and get them out of the way. Also, have a few summons already in place to distract the Slayer changed Irenicus, and try to have them between the slayer and your characters.

Why? The slayer/irenicus can cast Time Stop and is likely to do so in the first round. In the next three rounds (duration of TS), he can rip through two sets of stoneskins (e.g. one set already cast + one set from contingency) and gut your characters. Very Nasty.

Heh, i had to reload the Irenicus final battle autosave, since my ToB Viconia romance wasn't working. So i redid the whole fight on Insane mode, got him on my 2nd try surprisingly easy, without any resurrections. I guess once you learn the pattern to defeat him, it becomes a lot easier. Also, planetars with insta-cast Heals are pretty nice xD

I once soloed tactics Irenicus on easy difficulty. That battle blew my mind. Never wanted to deal with it ever again. Congrats on your victory.

Don't forget to re-enable the lich spawning if you're going for an insanity run.
Also : Item stealing, to reduce cheesy-ness.

Managed to beat the fight (insanity, liches, bla) on a no-reload some time ago. 15th of October to be more precise. Custom party, but if i replaced Sleep-O with Korgan, Unbekannt with Haer, toss 3 of those 5 : Viconia, Keldorn, Minsc, Mazzy, Anomen, and it's basically the same.

Part 2 is seriously unbalanced, and i just don't see some classes beating it on insanity.

"Unbalanced" (like "cheesy") is one of these words that everyone uses differently. My working criterion is that if you have a half-way-sensibly chosen full-size party of Bioware NPCs, SCSII should be beatable on Core difficulty. People playing on Insanity can sink or swim.
