My party consists of a rogue/ranger, Alistair, Wynne, and Shale.  I've just grabbed the vial, it breaks, and releases a revenant.  Fine and dandy, except my rogue cannot seem to hit the revenant at all.  *miss* * miss* etc., is all i ever see.  Any idea why?  The fight is extraordinarily hard due to this, as you can imagine.

Well, for one, that fight is optional, so if you really cannot do it, simply don't. There is no reward for it other than a small codex entry and some loot from the revenant.

Secondly, adjust the difficulty downward to have an easier go of it if you want to do it that badly.

I do not know why your rogue would miss that much unless his dexterity is simply too low to hit a boss-level creature with any consistency. Another thing to do is make sure you do not enchant your weapons with cold damage because revenants are immune to cold.

Ah, could be the cold issue. His dex is certainly more than Alistair's, that's for sure, despite being a strength-based rogue. Thanks for the help!

These revenants simple are tough, and they debuff you to boot. Whenever you see one of those vials, prepare for a hard fight. I got pasted by the one in the tower around level 8, but I continued the tower quest and came back after it was done with two more levels under my belt, and the fight was much more managable. If in doubt, come back later, that vial is going anywhere.

There is a reward actually if you can find all five of them, A pretty decent shield.

Mage Staves that do magic damage (most of them are immune to spirit damage) work well and always hit. They're easier to fight at a higher level when your attack is higher, you need about an 80 or so attack to hit them reliably after they've debuffed you. You can use Force Field on a tank + Staff Attack to take them down at a low level, if you can hex them (that's a big if since they have a high magic resistance) you might be able to melee them. Maybe you could try having Wynne spam heroic offense on your characters. Arcane Bolts work, electrical attacks work too, I know ice doesn't work and I'm not sure about fire. But without 2 mages and with Wynne specced for healing you don't have magic to spam. Without those you'll probably have to wait until you're level 11 or so to take them.
