Lets pretend it's March and we've got our hands at ME3. We're using imported characters of ME1/ME2 (or ME2 only) and go through the story. You have an import with ALL squadmates alive including Zaeed and Kasumi, Wrex survived Virmire and your VS of course.

Non-spoilery speculation: you have to sacrifice one squadmate after another to continue the story and end the war.
Who would you sacrifice and in what situation? And what last words should they say?
Name as many as you want and what situation. Please keep spoilers out of this thread.

My picks are:

- Zaeed
While defending you and the rest of your squad while getting overwhelmed by Husks. His lasts words should be: "Was'n honor to fight alongside with you, Shepard. Now get out of here and make them pay!"

- Grunt
Getting killed by some huge creature or something. Last words: "Good fight ... good death ... like a real krogan ..."

- Jack
Dies because of getting overwhelmed: a reaper destroys her biotic shield dome that was protecting Shepard and the squad - similar to the one in SM. Her last words: "If there's another side, I'll make their dreams to hell."

- VS (Ashley)
Dies while protecting mortally wounded Shepard in the final battle. Last words: "Oh captain, my captain ... "
(Sad Ending)

Uhhh ... kinda. Not complete and not perfect, but who cares. Your ideas?

I would never sacrifice Miranda, Kasumi, Liara and possibly Tali. I would include Legion here but since he's a Geth I figure he's got backups. Everyone else is expendable. If you want a list by priority the rest, from important to expendable:
Ashley
Mordin
Garrus
Wrex
Samara
Grunt
Jacob
Jack
Thane
Zaeed
Vega

Selection based on preference and usefullness. Couldn't think of last words now. May edit and add later.

Usefullness = Attractiveness?

I'd sacrifice them all if i had to.

Usefullness in combat i.e. as part of the squad. Most of that list is character preference as some of the lower ones rarely got off the bench. Also different squad members will be useful to different Sheps I guess.

Anyone and everyone (save Shep) to defeat the Reapers.

Jack - falling down a cliff and everybodys laughing til they realize she's dead. At this point, the laughter becomes even louder.

I'd get them all killed to save the galaxy. Then, lastly, it would probably have to be Shep.

I wouldn't sacrifice any squadmate from any of the three game (except Zaeed. You can't trust mercenaries).

If I can, I'll try to sacrifice as least as possible. Somehow I believe BW will make it as difficult as possible - and that's no spoiler - by giving you the decision between a squadmate and an entire colony, race or something else of that size. In that case I'll sacrifice the squadmate ... :crying:

If I cant promote peace betwen the Quarians and Geth, ill sacrifice the Quarians if it means getting the Geth on my side. I dont like the Quarians that much...

Other than that.. I dont mind sacrificing anyone except for VS and Garrus.

'Character X, because I don't like them'. Good times.

Shrug, it'd depend on the situation for me, because I'd pick 'em based on that rather than conga-line offing characters I didn't much care for first. I wouldn't leave, say, Grunt behind to arm a bomb or the like no matter how indifferent I am to him as a character.

Pretty much.

Kaidan would be my first choice, but, uh...that one's already been done. So Liara, I guess.

Actually, this thread was born out of the idea to make deaths of some characters more meaningful. There was a debate why ppl kill certain characters out of hatred - and how it negates the effects of "sacrifice" intented by BW.

Yeah, I know. I wasn't really referring to your original post. I'm talking about stuff like, say;

It would depend on my given squad, what skills I need in my group and such. Otherwise, a few random thoughts:

- VS, if I have to save them a 3rd time (Horizon being #2) then I'll probably leave him/her behind. If their luck is that bad it's probably just not in the cards for them to live I guess.

- A few who stand out as priorities: Liara, Legion, Wrex.

- Almost priorities: Tali (tech-specialst, standing with Quarian people), Garrus (heavy-hitter, leadership ability), Mordin (story-line importance)

- Particularly expendable: Thane, Jacob.

- Almost expendable: Kasumi (tech-specialist), Jack (biotic-specialist), Samara (biotic-specialist), Grunt (heavy-hitter), Zaeed (heavy-hitter), Miranda (story-line importance).

- I would throw Liara in front of the first truck... seriously the first truck I see on Earth, the reapers wouldn't even get to her before I do >8(

- Jack is sad, her life is pretty much meaningless, so she'd probably be the first sacrificed

- Miranda would be the second, because I also hate her.

- and then pretty much I'd fight myself in choosing anyone else. Kaidan would be the last thing I'd sacrifice, I'd kill my Shep before he goes.... I'd.... sacrifice Legion for him!!! (dun dun dun!!)

Cause everybody loves doing the robot!!

This...though some of my sheps would consider sacrificing some of the more unused in combat characters( my list is pretty close Crutch's).

Hmm, I would be willing to sacrifice any of them, including Shepard, except:

Joker
Tali
Garrus
Helen Mirren (dont remember the character's name, the medic)

Mostly because these folks have built the closests ties to my Shepard, as they were all there since the first game and that has also created a sort of feeling of responsiblity that they trust you to get them through and unlike most other characters, especially those from ME2, it would feel like betraying that trust. Characters like Miranda who are just built to be "the girl, love interest" or "the scientist" or suchlike don't really resonate as much, whereas the others more feel like rounded characters that you know not as "that role" or "that archetype", and thus the decisions become harder.

While I would hesitate to Sacrifice Liara, I would still chose the Galaxy over her. Again, meeting her in ME1 where she was pretty green and seeing her grow to be one of the most powerfull entities in the mythos also gives greater importance to her fate, oh and it wouldnt be very usefull to lose a shadow broker buddy.

Oh, and in the case of Ashley, I would buy a front seat, get a drink, and enjoy the show. ^^ Really, i liked her in ME1, but after all I went through in ME2 and she didnt even give shepard the chance to explain why he was with cerberus. wth?! Call it ex-LI syndrome ;)

To sum it up and get some arguments regarding making decisions difficult, as a starting point I go from objective loss/gain evaluation, but where an emotional investment and tie  to the character plays in, that can sway away from what would otherwise be the logically sensible. That is also why most decisions to sacrifice people in games come rather easily, because they don't manage to make it clear WHO you are sacrificing exactly, nor make it a personal loss for the player as it often involves sacrifice of two things separate from you and thus without "real" consequence to the player.
