Keep this as spoiler free as possible, but... Am I only allowed to take them with me if it's a post-game save and they're usable in my party at that point? IE. whoever I side with/isn't dead/etc. or will they just magically be available (excluding if they're dead) for one reason or another in the DLC?

The reason I'm asking, is that I want the family outing achievement, but the additional post-Act 1 dialog intrigues me too, however from a gameplay standpoint I don't see myself waiting until the end of the game to unlock a bunch of cool gear/etc. that I'll never use again, except for other DLCs.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You can take your sibling with you at anytime if they are alive. If you play Legacy post game it will still chronologically take place in Act 3.

Cool, so an Act 2 playthrough of the DLC will allow me to take Warden or Templar Carver then for example? The wikia was misleading and kept making me think it was ONLY if it was post-game.

Yes, he'll always show up at the beginning of the DLC, if he's alive, saying something like "It's a good thing the Wardens/Templars let me come." If you don't bring him along he says he's going to keep watch.

Bethany did a lot of hardening when she became a warden it made me sad. I loved the part where Hawke did Carvers dance to make her smile that was a level of character depth that made me nod to the writers for making such a tiny part of the content so personal to my Hawke and the relationship she had with Bethany.
