There are some really amazing 8-bit games that are better than most current-gen games. Graphics can be very important, especially in a cinematic game like Mass Effect, but the entire presentation has to be consistent. A current-gen game should have current-gen graphics.Doctor Moustache wrote...

Apparently we're just not worth the trouble. =/
I really laugh at this argument. Go back to playing 8-bit games if you really believe that.

And ATI-cards doesn't burst into flames if you push them to the limit.
Most people with more than casual interest in gaming have hardware that will blow away all but a few titles - Crysis used to be he-who-cannot-be-maxed-out & I'm not up on the latest - but ME will work fine with late 2000's vintage gear - sadly.

Consoles will always be deficient compared to general purpose computing systems. However, large tower cases and bulky components are already effectively obsolescent simply because the general public has a misperception that those are outdated compared to (vastly inferior) laptops. Something on the order of nine laptops are sold to home users for every desktop sold to the ordinary public. It is the business buyers who keep buying desktops, or else game players would have none to choose from.marstor05 wrote...
PCs are living on borrowed time now. The next generation of consoles will be modular removing the need for a PC.
Except for the AMD APU-equipped laptops, the typical mobile units do not even meet the graphics standards of the 2004 or 2005 Xbox360, since all they have is Intel video. Eventually, between crap from Intel and decent graphics in the cores from AMD, the market for Low End and Medium graphics cards will dry up, which is why nVIDIA has been so desperate about developing a future market in the Smartphone area.
Tablets of various sizes are already a factor to consider, and the combination tablet / laptop is likely to replace Notebook size laptops (removable keyboards on the tablets). The small form factor "NetTop" computers are likely to gain traction for general purpose computing, and will have AMD multi-core processors with Medium quality graphics suitable for game playing in them within a relatively short time from now, 2011.

Yeah - and I hear that it will - DX9 + some customization and improved textures (aluminum clothing and cast polyethylene hairdos will remain with us)

Does somebody knows when console upgrade wars starts? And what kind of haedwere we are talking about? A bit more specific then "i can smell the greatness of my console " . Anybody any specs.
There are plenty of rumours, pretty much all of them are false, at least on the specs.
However, Sony always said that the PS3 had a lifespan of ten years and since we haven't heard of any PS4 for the next year (years), it could be on the money. That means that until 2013/2015 do not expect any PS4. And I could guess that Microsoft is going the same route.
And I can't blame them. Look at what DICE is doing. They are, among many others that you can do a *lot more*
with the current hardware technologies than what was even considered possible
when the hardware was first launched.
There are other "enemies" as well to
consider. Playstation portable and Nintendo DS are being murdered by iOS and
Android devices, and this trend will one day continue in
tablets.
Yeah, the future will bring tablets more
powerful than PS3s and Xboxes360s which will link wirelessly with your tvs. This
will not kill consoles outright, but will present a deep challenge.
That will be an interesting landscape to
watch.

this sounds very right - and wirelessly link [for $$ of course] with steam/origin-like hosting sites on which you will only find your games...no more mini-dvds floating around the playroom

tablets and prtable gaming devices are merely currents trend will may weaken sometime in the future, sometime in the future it is like that pc gaming will rise once again as pc tech is ever improving and somebody make start back the pc trend, with the creation of truly graphical photorealistic games,
we dont know what the future hold people,
we can only speculate.
and i hope the pc gaming comes back to the popularity of the 90's and early 00's.
Back on topic i recently played ME2 PC and i realized that the graphics are not as good on pc as they should have been, as some of you said we dont need BF3 quality graphics, but we MUST not should, MUST get PC QUALITY GRAPHICS, as we are PAYING CUSTOMERS!!

But with this game, my old pc overhaul, my wife hijacking my pc for game of her own, i had to overhaul one and build another fast. Little bit of consulting in local pc store and i have red gpus and green cpu-s. I got so much bang for a buck that i never ever considered any console or slaqte or laptop.
Thous green and red companys are keeping average gamers and gaming rigs affordable and - alive. I think.

I have laptop, rugged laptop, 5 inch display mobile phone and desktop. Most of time i use mobile phone or desktop, and laptops come into play only on the road, occasionally.
So my future goes with big phone/slate and desktop. But i dont sell my laptops just jet. I dont intend to buy any "boxes".

Um, if you don't like ME2's graphics, then you should complain to the guys who make the UE3 engine, not Bioware. There's only so much Bioware can do to improve an engine that doesn't even fully belong to them.
Yes and no , because they do have the ablity to modify(and have) from the default engine.Let's be clear here ME1/2/3 do not run on the default Unreal engine , Bioware has said they had to heavily modify the engine to get the results that are seen.
To me it's all opinion , I personally think ME2 graphics on ME3 would have been perfectly fine.

I would enjoy a downloadable HR texture pack, additional lighting effects and that kind of stufff on my PC...
... as long as the base system requirement stays the same.
You see I got another copy for the old PC so my wife and myself can play together sometimes. That PC handles ME1 and 2 perfectly, but I really don't like the idea of having to buy a new PC for that.
If they keep the optimalization as they did with ME2, then by all means.
But anyways, three months till the release, I think we are waaay past designing graphics.
