Voiced, all the way. It really hurts the immersion for me when you have a silent main character. Meh.

Silent. Bioware has yet to demonstrate they can do a voiced protagonist well, probably due to the resource constraints.

Silent. Voiced worked for the Mass Effect series because from day one it was the story of Commander Shepard and had that more movie-like feel.

That is not fitting for the Dragon Age series and DA2 shows how badly it fails when you try and force it to be:

- Hawke was a human, which pissed off everyone who wanted to play a non-human character. This is because to give us the choice they'd have to record 6 voice tracks: Human Male, Human Female, Elf Male, Elf Female, Dwarf Male, Dwarf Female.

- The dialogue options were cut down severely. As much as BW would like to pretend otherwise, the conversation options were still essentialy Paragon, Neutral, Renegade.

There are a whole bunch of other problems with DA2 but those are the ones that pertain most to the subject of voiced protagonist vs silent.

I loved DAO because my Warden felt 'mine'. Be it my mage who at the end prevailed on Alistair to free the mages or my city elf rogue that took Leliana to task for suggesting that the lot of Orlesian city elves was better simply because their cages were gilded. There is a disconnect with Hawke who is not my character or yours but one made by and belonging to EA-Bioware.

So, my thought, keep voiced protagonists in the more cinematic shooter-with-RPG-elements games and Silent on actual RPGs.

...Not that's going to happen as the decision isn't really Bioware's any more and we all know which option 'big brother' likes.

Here's the order of my preference:

1. Silent with text

2. Silent in conversations, with full text options being selected. Then, in cinematics, battle, side comments or in spots in the conversation when a full response isn't neccessary to choose (a situation where a "go on" or " I'm listening" would not be worth bringing up the text choice), a voiced protagonist. This way, there are scenes where the character is actually talking. However, even in cinematics, I'd still like to have control over what they say, even if it is just choosing a general mood (like what is seen in Sheppard's rally speeches in ME and ME2).

3. Fully voiced protagonist, with full text shown.

4. Full voiced protagonist, with paraphrases shown, then full text shown when you "hover" over the conversation option.

99,999,999. Voiced protagonist with cryptic symbols and three word paraphrases. A la DA2.

Voiced Protagonist works for Mass Effect but I didn't like it in DA2 because it meant no elves or Dwarves. If they could figure out a way to give us all the races and keep their voiced protagonists I'd be fine with it (as long as they didn't use the sleazy sounding dialogue they used for Hawke... honestly everything out of her mouth was lecherous.)

But I was fine with Silent as well, just choosing their voice for little things in battle. It worked fine in this style of game.

A new one eh ? I think I said pretty much everything I had to say in the thread linked below. Plenty of debate over the subject.

What is your actual opinion on Voiced/Silent protagonist ? -with poll

Silent. I want to have as much control over my character as possible. If I'm in a mood to play some character that is not mine I'll go play Uncharted, or smth else...

A tremondous amount of people who played DA2 hate Hawke. This is an epic failiure for a RPG. A RPG can have some flaws; cliche story, boring combat etc. These can be tolerated.  But if I can't emphatize with my character nor respect him in a RPG, I have no reason to play it. VA is good when it comes with a defined character such as Geralt or Adam Jensen however in DA series we were supposed to play as ourselves. VA will present us a defined personality and many will hate it.

I'd like to see the data you extrapolated this from.

  Says who?

A voice does not define a personality and there will always be those who dislike something.

I don't know how to do this but a poll can be created to see Hawke hate. There was no Bhaalspawn hate nor Warden hate but many people hate Hawke, it is an undeniable fact. dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:Why_this_hate_for_Hawke%3F

"
You are one of the few who escaped the destruction of
your home. Now, forced to fight for survival in an ever-changing world,
you must gather the deadliest of allies, amass fame and fortune, and
seal your place in history. This is the story of how the world changed
forever. The legend of your Rise to Power begins now."

DA2 should have been my legend, not Hawke's.

Voice defines personality, I think my warden as an aristocratic English gentleman and I love him. But VA would have destroyed this chance.

I'd really prefer a silent protagonist. It's very easy to dislike things about a character when it has a voice and a predetermined personality.

I'd like to keep as close to a role playing game as possible, and, to me, the silent protagonist does this better than a voiced character.

Voiced all the way. The main thing that upsets me in DAO is that I feel like a ******* retard, because I never speak. It is like I am playing with a mentally handicapped character.

Voiced protagonist is so much better than a mute passive observer character. It makes them more memorable and gives them a personality. I care more about them than i ever could with the mute protagonist, who i forget about once the game is over and never miss them being around.
