My question is this:

On normal difficulty or higher, has anyone ever defeated Loghain in a one-on-one duel using a sword and shield warrior? If so, what equipment was used (that played a factor), what tactics, and what if any character traits/abilities allowed victory?

Was just wondering, as my few attempts with my sword and shield warrior and Alistair met with utter disaster. I'm strongly leaning toward a new sword and shield warrior run, and knowing this could help.

Sorry, I've never managed to make it that far with a Sword & Shield...usually get bored with the character while still in the Origins part & end up going 2H or DW......

Thanks for replying. Warriors don't bore me at all so that's no problem for me. I know I can beat Loghain with Sten or Morrigan, or maybe even Zevram (I say this because recently my dual wielding rogue defeated Loghain). Was just wondering if anyone successfully did it.

Shield Bash him immediately when the fight begins before he can get his buffs running. Keep him constantly stunned or knocked down with War Cry, Shield Bash, Shield Pummel, Frightening Appearance, poison, paralyze runes etc.
I'm sorry, but it's not like a S&S warrior has many active talents (i.e. 4) that could make up a "tactic". If you cannot handle him with the best sword / armor you have, you are probably severly underleveled or badly equipped and thus no match for him. Characters that can deal a lot of damage fast usually have an easier time with Loghain since he gets very annoying to fight after a while with his knock downs and good to-hit ratio.

I make sure that Alistair can use poisons.  That helps considerably.  Stock up on the higher-tier poisons before going into the Landsmeet.  Poisons can be stacked, so just before starting the fight it is possible to activate four or five different poisons.   

Also, it helps to have his physical resistance up to 100 -- which is quite possible using a good combination of armor and hale runes.  Otherwise, he gets knocked down a lot.  (Warden Commander armor upgraded to dragonbone has some nice bonuses.)

Keep Precise Striking activated and use Perfect Striking if you have it.  Keep different types of health potions handy in the quickbar -- some lesser, some regular, some greater, some potent, and so on.  If you only have one strength of health potion there is a cooldown time between uses.  So by having different strengths of health potion it is possible to get around the wait time when the going gets tough.

just make sure you have quiet death and all sort of stuns and debuff. my rogue put on stealth, applied quiet death, go behind him for backstab and he is dead in less than 30 second without even hitting me at all.

Thanks for the input guys. Alistair using poison! Never even considered (I've played too many D&D games I guess). But yeah with the stunning poision that would give him a fighting chance. And putting physical resistance as high as possible, with things like knockrocker helmet and runes, that is well worth it against as well. These last two suggestions might be enough to turn the table, thanks for the suggestions guys -- maybe my character (a sword & shield warrior) might be able to beat Loghain after all...

Rock Knocker adds 25 to physical resistance. Good choice.

I've defeated Loghain with an s&s character at normal a long time ago, by just knocking him down and using health poultices a loooot
I'd advice using a mage with crushing prison though, just cast that and damage him to death.
