After seeing Sandal in the deep roads again (Not Enchantment!) it got me thinking about the possibility of him being a mage or having some type of magical powers. I know this has been discussed before but the last threads were about a year old. Where would those powers have come from? Theories in the past were that it was due to an over-exposure to lyrium or that he may be a primordial (primeval?) dwarf.

So it occurred to me, could it be that Sandal is actually half elf? Weren't the elves once sheltered in Orzammar or sheltered by the dwarves? It may also explain Sandal's beard-less face (I do not recall seeing elves with facial hair). Plus we know the offspring from human x elf do not display much if any elven traits.

Thoughts?

Legacy says that he's possibly the lost son of an Aeducan, whose mother was either a human or an elf.

I say his mother was a human, since he doesn't have pointed ears like the other half-elven human people do (Feynriel and Danarius).

But yes, he is a mage because he used a freezing spell on an Ogre.

Do we know that a freezing spell was used? Or that Sandal cast it himself?

All this has been discussed before.

In Legacy it's said that he may be an Aeducan bastard. Which probably means that he are. So, given how the dwarven society works, i assume it must be either an elf or a human like you, since if she had been a dwarf, she would just have been raised as royal concubine(or however you spell it, freaking english...), with Sandal, or whatever he would have been named.. Bobby Aeducan?

It's said that half-dwarves,(Dwarf+human) are very rare, and elf-dwarves are never even mentioned, so I'm not at all sure that's even possible.
Also, dwarves and Arlathan was tradign with each other long before humans showed up, so i would suppose that if such a mix was possible, it would at least have been mentioned.

Where in Legacy was Sandal mentioned? I didn't get that conversation at all. Do you have to have Varric with you?

Since he is male and in dwarven society they always take the caste of the parent whose sex they are, it is reasonable to assume that the Aeducan was female and whoever his father was whether castless dwarf, human or elf, she was ordered to abandon him in the Deep Roads.

It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that his parent was a Grey Warden on their Calling, which could account for them being a non dwarf. That sword you find in the Deep Roads in Origins belonged to an elf. I always assumed he was a Grey Warden and that is why he was down there but who knows?

Alternatively, may be a human mage on the run from the Chantry briefly ended up in Orzammar and had a relationship with an Aeducan. Mind you not all dwarves have facial hair so his father could have just been a castless dwarf and the rejected child was dumped near a lyrium vein and absorbed some of its power.

I never heard that mentioned in Legacy but admit, I've only played it once so far. Was is in a conversation or in the codex? if codex that would explain why I missed it, the text is way too small for me to read on my old tv.

but that could be why he is so special, because it is so rare.

Yup. he was surrounded by Darkspawn by himself -- or Bodahn if you refuse to find Sandal, but Bodahn isn't a mage -- and he said "Not Enchantment".

Since the Deep Roads haven't been traversed by anyone for centuries until the Expedition, it was Sandal.

It's a banter between Carta Dwarves during Act 2 if you do Legacy then. You may need to trigger the text to appear overhead a person when they speak so you'll know what's happening, as well as turning down the other audio things that might interfere with hearing the dialogue.

IIRC, on one of the dead Darkspawn in that scene you find a frost staff.  I got the feeling that something was implied/hinted at by the staff.  Dunno.

I always prefer to think of him as an avatar of the Stone.
