Book:

Dune (Frank Herbert): Potential incest, grandiose setting, well-done evil villains, and a plot infamously "wound" so tightly that the tension is palpable. I love it. It's my favorite series, my favorite story, and its poor translation into movies and video games only signifies how well it's written. Just enough Sci-Fi to make things work, and loads of human retrospection.

Movie:

Aliens: Close to Jurassic Park for me, but you can't beat the ultimate Sci-Fi romp with a strong feminine lead and tons of guns.

books: Lord of the Rings, Goethe's "Faust", Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

movies...: Star Wars, LotR, Schindler's list and Pans Labyrinth

There are some more stories, which are epic to me, but I think this are very much my top stories.

@bobo: Do you have to pester everything with that pony crap?? That's really insulting for all the great writers on this planet!

That's what I thought too, before I actually read it.

I'd also like to give a shout out to the Legacy of Kain series, which I consider to have one of (if not the) best stories told in a video game.

There's this story of a guy who created a world and populated it, but the people in his world started hating one another and doing horrible things to each other. So he became like one of them, but didn't tell them he was their creator. He did all these great things, cause it was his world after all, but when he told them that it was his world, they flew into a rage and killed him. But, after all, sense it was his world, death couldn't keep him down...

I'm sure you've heard of it.

The one where I walk around clothes shops for three hours, trying on hats and shoes in a vague attempt to keep myself preoccupied and make my wait go faster. You tell it before bedtime because it's so utterly boring, it will help even the most hardened insomniac sleep soundly.

She was was brilliant in Aliens, although one of my my favorite lines remains that of Vesquez...."let's rock!"

 Yea! Why not? B)

I always thought I Claudius was really great. The story had everything.

"I'll put it all in here, my story, my history of the family, yes, and the end of the Republic, yes, and when I`ve finished I`ll seal it up and bury it where no one will find it...not for 1900 years or more...."

Since I have been reading Hunter x Hunter as of late I am going with it.

Anyone here who thinks thet shonen manga are full of cliché stories well I have news you will not know how the story of Hunter x Hunter will go, hell I can bet on it.

But really if One Piece is the epitome of shonen, than HxH is kind of shonen's deconstruction - the extremely cool black sheep of the family - but I love both very much.;)

I can't pick one. I think every story has its own deeper meaning. Among those that aren't meant to, there are still highs and lows. I can try to puzzle out what's the best story I have ever seen on a technical level, but the personal element throws a spanner into my gears. This question is as hard for me to answer as a zen kōan. XD

I think its Predator 2.

My pick would be a story about a lovely lady who was bringing up three very lovely girls. All of them had hair of gold like their mother, the youngest one in curls. Its also a story about a man named Brady who was busy with three boys of his own. They were four men living all together, yet they were all alone. So the one day when the lady met this fellow and they knew it was much more than a hunch, that this group must somehow form a family and thats the way they became the Brady bunch.

Final Fantasy X. Nothing will beat that game's story.
