What is the greatest story ever told?

Other video games...well... just The Longest Journey.
Books:
"Droll thing life is — that mysterious arrangement of merciless logic for a futile purpose. The most you can hope from it is some knowledge of yourself — that comes too late — a crop of unextinguishable regrets."
Heart Of Darkness

Ick, hated that book.EternalAmbiguity wrote...
There's this story of a guy who created a world and populated it, but the people in his world started hating one another and doing horrible things to each other. So he became like one of them, but didn't tell them he was their creator. He did all these great things, cause it was his world after all, but when he told them that it was his world, they flew into a rage and killed him. But, after all, sense it was his world, death couldn't keep him down...
I'm sure you've heard of it.
Way too much fluff and the main character was such a Sue.

I know not many people can say this but...I GET neon genesis evangelion.
there was also this book i read a long time ago. Something about the law of relativity. and how "relatives" "suck". And how nothing could escape a black hole. and how the main character had to fight? i guess, with this throughout the book.
then theres "sometimes I wish it was time for Cheers, but its not, its time for vengeance."
The Maxx, another mindblender like NGE.
But i think above all of those, "Boy Meets World" ranks as my greatest story ever told.

The Mahabharata comes to mind immediately for me...it's scope is Epic in every sense of the word.
I think that the long-term "Continuity" of America's Big Two comic publishers sit high up there for me...they are the closest thing America has to a unified Epic Mythology IMO...even with all the questionable editorial choices made over the years.
But I really think that Human history, when looked at as a narrative is probably the greatest story...if it was presented to a Being who was completely unfamliar with any of our History I think the reaction would be "Wow!" followed by "It's good, but there's just way too much stuff that just seems made up"

It's not really an emotional story, or one with a great deal of character development etc., but the actual overarching plot, characters aside, is incredible.
It's a hard question to answer though. There are some games with plots that were in aggregate, not very thick at all and just relied on a single twist, but in that single moment where the plot meant everything, it was glorious. Bioshock was a good example of that I thought. Most of the elements of the plot where Andrew Ryan is talking are fantastic, especially when you first go down into the underwater city and watch his intro video. The rest - a bit lackluster - and deliberately so.

I'm going to go all fanboy and say pretty much everything that has had Chris Avellone as a lead designer/writer. Torment is and shall remain my favourite videogame ever. It delivers everything I desire in storytelling: unique setting, interesting characters, underlying philosophical themes, tragic character-driven plot, in medias res and so on. While KOTOR 2 is the only thing Star Wars related that I truly loved, for pretty much the same reasons including its delicious deconstruction of "The Force".

Heart Of Darkness
I agree with everything you said. As for a lot of the story, there are several little storylines that could be made into another installment. I have no idea why Chris Avellone didn't win a Pulitzer Prize/Nobel Prize for such awesome writing in a video game. Also, there are so many morally grey areas that make me cringe when I see them like Fhjull Forktongue and Pharod's situations (don't want to post spoilers).
As for the Heart of Darkness, the story actually put me to sleep. I had to read and analyze it for my high school lit. class. Don't get me wrong, I like a good story as much as the next guy, but I didn't feel anything for it. I thought the movie version would make me appreciate it more, but Apocalypse Now (if you can count it as the film version) also didn't do it for me.
I'm not into books, but I would say Animal Farm is probably the best story I've ever read.

Bioshock: Meeting Andrew Ryan was so mind blowing even though I knew what was happening.
Joyeux Noël: Just watch it. Or if you know what happened on the 25th of December 1914 you don't need to.
Also Inception, Code Geass, Elfen Lied, Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect had great stories as well.

When the last dragon birthed its genetic line into human making sure all the information and knewledge would live on even if its offspring did not know they had secrets of existence from the universe to flowers to gods and to even water itself. For one lifetime the soul of that dragon would come back as its own grandson ready to meet its own and reconnect to the universe it once lived in.so now the dragon has told you its sercret.

As far as books go, I'd say The Lord of the Rings for now, but I'm waiting for the last book in The Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy and if it lives up to expectations I'll probably go with it as my favourite story in a book, maybe even my favourite story ever.
But for now, if I have to pick one story over all the others, I'd go with Buffy.

Too early to say since it isn't done, but I think that Fallout: Equestria might be a serious contender.
*snip*
I can't believe I'm saying this but I think I might actually enjoy this. <_<
Ghost in the Shell I really like, the Studio Ghibli anime movies are also extremely well done I think. (I really need to do myself a favour and watch NGE sometime) But yeah, FO:E is amazing, It's over 40 huge chapters long and still going. It wouldn't be if people didn't love it so much.
