I don't think there is anything wrong with giving characters a little sex appeal, but it shoud not be out of character, be practical for the work they're portrayed as doing, and not gratuitous. Samara's outfit fails on all three counts.

If Samara returns in ME3 I think she should still be sexy, but she should be wearing something that shows a lot less skin and is practical for combat.

Then what the hell are you on about with "Who's Miranda?"

There is no Miranda in Mass Effect. For some reason though... everyone calls MJ Miranda  so I can see why people would make that mistake.

Stop being an idiot.

That is clearly a mistake. Whoever added that to the wiki is retarded.

I've had my fill of forum regulars being obtuse because they think it's cute, or clever, or funny, or something.

I wonder if this was what people saw me writing back when I was debating on Morinth...

Should I believe this person and show the same solitude that was shown to me in the end? Could this also really be true?

If you've played ME2 and seriously believe that there is no MIranda in Mass Effect, then you need psychological help. Otherwise, you're just trollling, or think you're being clever or cute.

It's not cliver, and it's not cute, it's just idiotic. If you are a Tali fan, then you're just draggin the rest of her fans down with you by acting this way.

Right. Because I, speak for every Tali fan, right? People on the BSN really are stupid huh? If you noticed, most of the Tali fans probably hate me :P, but good try.
but back to what I was saying. stop defending MJ. Its offensive. While we are at it, lets get back on topic.

I cannot take a character seriously when she has such a ridiculous outfit that clearly only exists to appeal to horny 14 year-olds.

Not really.

It's just stupid if anyone thinks that one guy reflects the opinion of an entire fanbase of individual people.

And if anyone does, I feel sorry for them.

Miranda and Jacob were clearly fan service but Samara takes the cake.

You guys need to take your eyes off her ****** and consider the dialog in the game.

I don't understand what's supposed to be so ridiculous about Samara's outfit. As Benezia has already demonstrated in ME1, an asari's biotic power is proportional to the amount of cleavage. Jack is the same principle applied to humans, though some gene therapy might have also been involved. As such, revealing clothing is a necessity. And don't get me started on space suits - anybody would know that forward tanks this impressive can create natural barriers.

As for me, Samara won me over when she compared herself to samurai or errant knights. It's just, so far, I've been used to all species being mostly ignorant of each other's culture in scifi or fantasy. This was a welcome change. Just like Wrex reproaching Kaidan for thinking of the krogan as culturally homogenous. And the quest where you can surprise a quarian by knowing about the pilgrimage tradition.

I concur, but there's a difference between "a little sex appeal" (=>> Ashley, Tali, Kasumi) and "defines/overshadows character" (=>> I won't name characters so no one feels offended).

Just my 2 cents.

I share the opinion that Samara's outfit clashes with the rest of her character.

Image IPB

That's just Samara's head on FemShep's body, but it's enough to make me think Samara does look good without giving everyone a free show.

Wow, she looks a lot better in the armor, and no less sexy.

It's clear the Asari straddle the line of being a legitimate literary concept and blatant fan service. Thus Liara was born, a decent character with believable motivations. Then along came Samara. I get the impression that the writers took a long hard look at Liara and realized she was basically fan service. So they set about creating a more credible character, one who had a compelling past and more believable motivations, one who had strict morals, a rigid personailty, and most importantly, one we couldn't do the Asari black-eyed romp with.  Samara was a step in the right direction. If she doesn't play a significant role in ME2, if she isn't a crew member, it will be a lost opportunity imo.

Yeah... who here remembers the last major implementation of Bushido as a organizational principle? Besides the Chinese, Koreans, Philippines, Indonesians, and prisoners of war of various nations?

I'm amazed every time people cite 'the samurai code' or 'knightly honor' as if it were a grand, noble thing.

They are noble paths (at least the seven virtues), you cannot make examples of it with deformations of the code itself.

Knightly honour is a literary myth.

I don't know enough about samurai to know for sure, but I suspect that their code was a poetic construct as well. Certainly the romanticised version of the social class doesn't live up to what I've read of the culture's history.

lmao at the closeup of her breasts. The first thing I thought about after reading the first post, really. There's artistic liberty and then there is pumping it to 9000 and beyond. The Asari as a whole are quite clearly a fanservice in any case and Bioware have said as much. I mean, an all female, sexy blue alien race who actually have a life stage where it's normal to be a stripper?
I admire the lengths which some people go and how much they extrapolate in order to try and explain that Asari norms and conventions are why it is acceptable. In any case, it remains better than the argument of "BUT THEY'RE NOT ALL WOMEN, DUDE! THEY'RE ASARI!"
Needlessly forgetting that it is a bunch of regular guys that created them in the first place.

All you need to do is just look at the outfit. Just look at it, really. I have nothing against boobs and the like. Trust me, lol.
It's just that we're presented with this priestess/warrior like figure and given a flashy and overly excessive getup. That's not subverting a trope btw.
I love, love, love Samara's character (she's deep and interesting and there's a lot to her) and would only love her more if it wasn't for...
Well, I've made my point.

On a side note, I did think that the OP was going to be criticising Samara and the fanservice aspect of the Asari. Not the opposite, lol.
In any case, while it does remain a gripe for me, it doesn't ruin my enjoyment of the game. I'm able to take them as they are and get on with it.

I think the Asari were originally designed to be a very fan service-y race but the way Bioware developed them through their lore and all that jazz I think has enabled them to evolve beyond that.

Though there's no denying the fan service aspect still exists.

Right dress code regarding the display of sexual characteristic would never vary over species, race or gender. boobies are regulated by intergalactic law.
