Uhuh. I think we've exchanged enough posts in enough threads that I know the nature of your "curiosity" by now. If you really want to have a proper discussion about this then send me a PM. For now, I'm stopping before Selena does some actual moderating.

This coming from the poster who "skipped 10 pages because I can"?

That's amazingly irrelevant. It has nothing to do with whether this is my first forum or if I'm new to the internet thing.

It's called being lazy, sir, you may have been it before.

Stop, both of you. Please.

I'm not trolling |:

I actually was posting constructively but then I was accused of being an internet n00b because I didn't read 10 pages

Seriously, within the context of the Mass Effect setting, Asari, Turians, Quarians, Krogans, Salarians, Drell, Batarians, Hanar, Volus, and Elcor are all forms of intelligent life that originated on other planets in other star systems -- aliens.

One can argue whether or not those aliens (noun) are alien (adjective) enough, but that's not justification for saying that they are not aliens (noun).

All of the potential female LIs have fan servicey elements to them. Some just are bigger examples of fan service than others.

Honestly out of all the female LIs the one that was the least fan service was Jack. Sure, she spends the game running around almost naked, but she's a flat-chested shank with a shaved head, and is covered from head to toe in tattoos. She's also got an abrasive personality. Some people may find that hot of course, but as a general rule she's about as far from most peoples' defintion of sexy as you can get. There are some elements of fan service of course (Shepard's therapy penis), but she has less elements of fan service than any of the other potential female LIs, including Samara.

And this is from someone who never romanced Jack in any game.

Right and generally its the eye candy rather than the way the character is written.

I certainly don't think the entire Asari race is fan service (despite Liara's naivete about the "myth" of Asari promiscuity)  - Aethyta, Shiala are good examples - even the consort is straight business - but for me one of the most believeable cameos was Erinya...

Samara and Aria are what the Asari should be like in my opinion. They are the most respected, eldest, longest living, and have more wisdom than any other species.

Yet... Most of them are fawning after Shepard, being hired in clubs as dancers, or being overly flirtacious at every possibility. Not what you would expect from the most aged and revered race in the galaxy.

[veiled threat] I am not sure if you quite comprehend this yet, master. But the HK series of assassin droids spoke like this before the Elcor even existed.

Jack is anything but flat-chested. Look at any male in-game and look at Jack. There's no way anyone should be able to make that mistake.

[disbelieving]  Merely speaking in monotone is not the same as Elcor speech.  The assassin drones were mere machines - not even endowed with higher level processsing AI capabilities.

[Thinly veiled haughture]  What you fail to realize is that the Elcor are clearly Fan Service.  Your inabilty to appreciate the subilties of pheromes and body language deprives you of a sensual experience beyond your wildest imaginings.

[whimsically questioning] "...shall I compare thee to a summer's day?  Thou are more lovely and more temperate..."

[quietly assured]  I rest my case.

Samara was made as direct opposite to Liara? Very likely, but I have to disagree with "Liara is sexy chick player will want to romance vs. Samara as primarily oriented on character depth".

As for me (I may be biased in this question - Liara hater, after all), Liara was made as "socially awkward young lady interested in science who have trouble in expressing feelings to player's character". Compare in this aspect to Merrill and ME2 Tali. Samara would make a contradiction through her colossal experience in battle and that she had already seen a lot in life, even got own kids; and that she's nearly perfectly calm when talking about personal feelings.

Who is more fanservice-y and who is deeper? As for me, all the character got fair share of features specially designed to conquer players' heart (Legion's "eyebrows", anyone?)... and I can only hope writers planned to give all the characters fair share of depth.

Yeah, it's the fact that all asari seemingly spend the first third or so of their elvishly long lives like sociopathic sorority girls that really diminishes them in my view.

Do we know for a fact that they all do that? We know Liara hasn't; how many Liara's are there out there?

Dear OP:

Your thread is bad and you should feel bad.

SERIOUS RESPONSE: The asari ARE obvious fanservice--I mean, come on, a race of beautiful women who can make babies with anything with a brain? Please. HOWEVER, Bioware has taken the "blue space babe" thing and made it work with a slew of very complex and realistic characters and cultural details. What would normally just be nerd ****** fodder evolved into something significantly more thoughtful, and the subversion of Ye Olde Token Twi'Lek adds to Mass Effect's charm.

I like Samara a lot, and while her outfit is dumb, her character more than makes up for it. She's beautiful, fascinating, well-written, and well-acted. Plus, kickass loadout. Assault rifles and Reave? Fuhgeddaboudit.

Liara... I'm not much of a fan. I liked her enough to try the romance, and damn but that girl knows her biotics, but she doesn't click with my personal tastes quite so well as the other squadmates. However, I really like how she continues to grow and mature throughout the series, even if that maturation was a bit sudden and bumpy in places (more like WHAT THE F*CK JUST HAPPENED, but hey, LotSB fixed everything), and the dynamic between her and Shepard, romanced or no, makes both characters more believable and entertaining (even if you can't roleplay around it TROLOLOLOLOL).

I really, really think it's a mistake to say Samara was intended to replace or improve upon Liara. They are both their own characters, each with far different roles in the story. But I think it's kind of fun to compare and contrast them a little--it shows that the asari have a very diverse selection of lifestyles and subcultures, just like humans, and the history of their civilization is just as rich, intriguing, and downright weird as our own.

Suddenly, you realize that games and fiction in general is made so people like it... and that calling one thing a fan service is pointless - it's all fan service. Mind equals blown.
