SERIOUS RESPONSE: The asari ARE obvious fanservice--I mean, come on, a race of beautiful women who can make babies with anything with a brain? Please. HOWEVER, Bioware has taken the "blue space babe" thing and made it work with a slew of very complex and realistic characters and cultural details. What would normally just be nerd ****** fodder evolved into something significantly more thoughtful, and the subversion of Ye Olde Token Twi'Lek adds to Mass Effect's charm.
I like Samara a lot, and while her outfit is dumb, her character more than makes up for it. She's beautiful, fascinating, well-written, and well-acted. Plus, kickass loadout. Assault rifles and Reave? Fuhgeddaboudit.
Liara... I'm not much of a fan. I liked her enough to try the romance, and damn but that girl knows her biotics, but she doesn't click with my personal tastes quite so well as the other squadmates. However, I really like how she continues to grow and mature throughout the series, even if that maturation was a bit sudden and bumpy in places (more like WHAT THE F*CK JUST HAPPENED, but hey, LotSB fixed everything), and the dynamic between her and Shepard, romanced or no, makes both characters more believable and entertaining (even if you can't roleplay around it TROLOLOLOLOL).
I really, really think it's a mistake to say Samara was intended to replace or improve upon Liara. They are both their own characters, each with far different roles in the story. But I think it's kind of fun to compare and contrast them a little--it shows that the asari have a very diverse selection of lifestyles and subcultures, just like humans, and the history of their civilization is just as rich, intriguing, and downright weird as our own.
