Title says it all. I know Wrex is a badass character and it will hurt, but if I'm playing a xenophobic playthrough and humanity is always first, should I kill Wrex on Virmire?

Sure, why not?
I'm doing a playthrough where I don't even get him at all. I can't find any masseffectsaves.com files with that and I wanted to see what Mass 2 would be like.

I've gotten Wrex killed in one playthrough and Shep seems to do it with a fair amount of vehemence. It can certainly be portrayed as xenophobic.
Watching him get killed actually creeps me out.

If you were really xenophobic would you really want to bring him along in the first place? I suppose the game forces you to have either him or Garrus.

I have a file where I killed him because that particular Shepard wasn't willing to risk him undermining the mission, and his death is fairly brutal (but necessary, given the regenerating nature of krogans). The whole scene could be taken as either pragmatic OR passionate, so I say go for it.

You can also signal Ashley to kill him, if you're a pansy.

Xenophobic Shep wouild probably kill Wrex. Professionally as a soldier, he's eliminating another risk to the Virmire mission, or personally, he/she's a xenophobe, so killing aliens is cool whenever.
Personally for me though, I can't ever bring myself to kill Wrex. I have one of my eight Sheps with Wrex dead, only because I did the basic ME2 settings, no import and no Genesis, because I can't bring myself to kill him. His lines and his character in general are much better than Urdnot Whoeveritis that takes his place.

Isn't there a way where you just stall him for a while and Ash ends up shooting him without your say-so?

Yes, it is wuite brutal, as Ash clearly enjoys it and mocks him as she shoots him many times on the ground. I fricken despise Ash already, but this was enough for least liked chracter ever. That being said, it takes good writing to do that and I hope she is the same in ME3.
