From what I can tell, I'm a horrible person for saying this but I can't seem to get into DA:O (even though I have Awakenings and almost all DLC) and like DA2 more (no DLC yet though...)

The farthest I have gotten into DA:O is the Circle Tower (towards the end of it), had to restart though thanks to a reformat, but can't seem to play more than 30 minutes at most.

I just don't understand why because this is the only Bioware game I have had issue beating, let alone getting into. (havn't beat DA2 yet, but was kinda hoping I would have something to import by now :crying: )

Anyone have any tips on gameplay? (best difficulty, race, class, etc) Do I just need to force myself through some parts, it gets better? Ive heard just about everywhere that DA:O is better than DA2 10 fold, but as of now, I just don't see it. :(

Well, since this was my first RPG experience and it became the greatest game I've ever played, my best advice would be stick with it, be patient and you'll get yourself so immersed in the game that you will be sad when it ends.

I totally understand you, I am the same with Mass Effect... I've tried a couple of times to make a go at it and cannot seem to get into. I believe that it's a beautiful game as so many people have told me, but there's something that's putting me off, maybe it the whole sci-fi / high-tech thing... I was always more into "old times" than futuristic stories.

When I got Dragon Age, I was totally clueless about RPG's and how they are supposed to be played that it was embarassing, but it was the story and characters that got me into it, and to this day I love my first Cousland Warden... I love Morrigan, Leliana, Oghren and Alistair, I love almost everything about this game. I've given it more hours (read: weeks) in playthroughs than I am willing to admit to myself let alone anybody else.

You don't need tips, believe me. Just play it and don't worry about making your perfect playthrough, have fun with it, do "what your heart tells you" and in time you'll get the hang of it. I've done a couple of playthroughs but my cannon Warden remains my first one.

For me, the most annoying/frustrating part of the whole game is the part in the tower you have to go solo and solve a puzzle of sorts...I play DA:O for the party interaction, which is why I favor it over oblivion, but in that part they take the funnest part of the game away. If you made a gimp character you really see your results there, and heaven forbid you were low on heal potions at that point...the lack of loot is unsatisfying too -- "Hey darkspawn I saw you hack me with that axe, how come I can't pick it up?"

I would prefer difficult/challenging (end of the Paragon quest) vs. the monotony/frustration here.

So back to your question -- I think the circle is the least funnest part of the whole game, so just have some patience and it will pick up. Also try talking to your party members, they can say some interesting things...

If you've given it a fair go, don't beat yourself up for not getting into it. It's like a relationship - if the spark's just not there you can't force it.
The story is great and gets very involving towards the end, but you should be immersed to some extent already. The characters are, I believe, the game's strongest features, so ask yourself if you really care about them at all (and before you ask this, go get your greatest companion, Shale from the Stone Prisoner DLC). If not, then maybe the game's just not for you.

The thing that I have the most trouble getting around is the begining. I dont like that your character is forced to become a Gray Wardon. Because for me your character's life is prity much over. The only reason I'm playing through DAO and DAO:A right now is to have a save file for DA2.

Here are my tips to you if you want a save file for DA2:

It helps to have the DA2 guied, as there are missions in DAO and DAO:A that do affect how meny missions you get in DA2 (mostly Act 1). If your having trouble beating or for that matter starting DAO. I say go with the casual difficulty (witch is easy mode) for the story. If you want the best tie in story line for importing into DAO:A. I recamend that you start as a humen noble. As there is a character in DAO:A that ties into the humen nobles start and end of DAO. Or you could just bypass DAO all to gether and start playing DAO:A to get a save file to import into DA2. And for class I choose the rouge. For picking locks, disarming traps and summoning animals to fight as a fifth party member, to help out when you get over welmed.

Same thing with me. I love the game, but I can only play a bit at a time. It's just very slow-paced, not like ME2, I stay up all night blitzing that. Doesn't mean DA isn't fun.

I can't play DA:O because I'm too busy writing DA:O fanfiction. So we all have our woes, I take it. :P

What don't you like about it? Tell us, and maybe we can work from there. There are many reasons to like DA:O but there are also many things to dislike DA:O. Its hard to help without knowing why.

yeah, if you're not seeing it by the time you get to the circle tower, maybe it wasn't designed with you in mind.  nothing personal! :)   i was into it before i even finished my first origin story, and started four or five more games before even finishing the initial ostagar scenario; so neither one of us is typical. :P  (what are your other BioWare games?  it would help to know if you, say, loved ME and never tried BG2, or vice versa, or w/e)

have you added Shale to your party yet?  did you skip Dog (and not play a human noble) and/or Leliana and/or Sten and/or Wynne?  i speculate that you'll only know whether you can 'get into it' when you're closer to the full array of party members to choose from...  i mean, if you've only got Morrigan and Alistair, i don't think anyone could blame you for getting sick of it by now! xD

i don't even know how to answer "best difficulty" if your priority is to have something to import to DA2 - is there really a chance that putting yourself through Nightmare ogres and demons will help you sit through more than half an hour at a time, when there are going to be dialogues and map-crossings in between regardless?  (or if you started on Nightmare, it's almost assured that lowering the difficulty will speed up your run-through - unless you're one of those mutants who only function smoothly under high-pressure virtual action :) )

the best race/class advice is already out there - i have never had anything to add to it, since (IMO) pure optimization destroys the point of RPGs - not all CRPGs, but since this is one of the few well-developed (and -modded) ones... claims that there is an objectively superior combination are only helpful for people who are painfully indecisive - and not okay with the fact that they are. ;)
also, how do you know how close you are to the end of the circle tower? :)  (the fact that one of the first mods was for skipping a rather repetitive section of the tower speaks volumes...)

The circle tower was initially the most frustrating experience for me, for the most part its just knowing which order to do the dreams in when you are trapped in the fade, so as to avoid having to backtrack all the time. TRUST me, let the story unfold a bit more and you'll fall in love with it.

If you're not into it, you may need to try another origin or run around with different party members.

If you don't love your character try out another class or origin. I found the City Elf female to be the most intense and immersive origin, followed by the Cousie and couldn't get into the Dwarf or Dalish origins at all, so maybe you've chosen an origin that doesn't inspire you. Also, your class can affect not only what you do, but also which party members you tend to run with, which can really affect your enjoyment. If you're a warrior you may end up leaving Alistair at camp and missing out on his snarky humor, etc. When I first played DA:A I felt I had to take 2 warriors and a mage as squad members and they were dull as Hell. The second time, I said: "screw it, we're going 3 rogues and the mage will be the tank" and damn, that was a blast! See which party members you enjoy being around and run with them instead of going for a "balanced" party.

Finally, if combat is getting you down, be sure to set your allies' tactics so you don't have to babysit them and so that fighting isn't so much of a chore.
