Hello, I just recently bought Mass Effect 2 from amazon. This game runs fine up until I press esc, and then the game crashes to the desktop. I downloaded the game from amazons digital distributor and i've installed the game right after download and tried playing and I've gotten as far as talking to the illusive man. So I've had this problem on v1.00 and I've also tried installing the 1.02 patch and I got the same problem. Then, I tried re-installing the game and I've loaded the game on v1.00 and v1.02 and again, I crash after hitting esc.
Here are my system specs.
I'm using an intel core i5-2500k @ 3.30 GHz and 8 GB of ram. The sound adapter is Realtek High Definition Audio driver version 6.0.1.6433. I'm using Windows 7 Pro service pack 1 and my directx version is DirectX 10.0 (march2009). Now, this is where it gets a bit weird. I'm using the onboard graphics, intel HD 3000 and reading off the configuration utility on Mass Effect 2, the VRAM is listed as "-244781056 bytes" and the driver version isn't even listed. However, I have downloaded the latest driver from intel website for the intel HD 3000. I'm not sure if the VRAM is normal and if so, I don't know how to fix it or if it is even relevant to the crashing. I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me out with my problem. Please let me know if I left out any information.

Nope. The game requires the real thing, and Intel has never gotten that right, only AMD and nVIDIA understand 3D game graphics.

Read your readme file: Video Card = 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support). Supported GPU Chips: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater(**); ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce G.205, G.210, 310, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, 9100, 9200, and 9300, also (probably) GT 520; ATI Radeon X1300, X1550, HD 2400, 3100, 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4250, HD 4350, 4550, and (probably) HD 5450 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required. Intel and S3 video devices are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2.

Oh, that's odd because i was looking at this list of games that are supported by intel hd 3000 and Mass Effect 2 is on this list. I guess there isn't much I can do about this problem except to buy a video card. Thanks.

The HD3000 meets ME2's requirements on paper. In reality, the fact that it shares memory with system ram, limited bandwidth on RAM and chipset throughout means that while it can work, results will vary from OK, to dead in the water.

It doesn't say supported, it says playable.
