So tell me, gents, out of the three STALKER games, which do you think is the best and which would you suggest to a relatively new player (assuming those aren't one and the same).

By most accounts, Clear Sky is the worst. Its the odd man out. Its the Dragon Age 2 of STALKER games.

Shadow of Chernobyl is the biggest in terms of the world. Call of Pripyat is probably the most polished. With either, but especially Shadow of Chernobyl, make sure you use the Complete mod. Fixes so much stuff and improves the vanilla game tons.

Does STALKER Complete result in a big performance hit?

I like the A.I. improvements and various features listed, but I usually avoid graphics mods because I'm playing on a laptop.

Oh man, the Game of Thrones RPG is on sale at 50% off.

This is a very tough call - might have to pick this one up. Wish it had a demo.

I've read it's 'meh'. Lots of potential; poor execution. I'll probably pick it up when it hits real bargain bin prices, but I'd be interested in your thoughts on it if you decide to grab it.

I'm not sure- when I started playing STALKER last year after getting it during the Steam sale, installing the Complete mod on Shadows of Chernobyl was the very first thing I did. I think the vanilla game has quite a few issues that merit the Complete mod. If you're worried about the graphics being too demanding, you can always adjust the options in the menu. I don't think the Complete mod does anything super intensive with the graphics to affect performance.

FWIW, I haven't played it but I've heard the gameplay is kind of "meh"- its sort of like Dragon Age Origins in that its kind of pause and play. The voice acting and graphics aren't that great, but I've heard the story is actually pretty good and if you like the whole Song of Ice and Fire universe, it has some interesting lore.

To be fair, I have a 680 GTX and a powerful machine in general, and the performance is not totally smooth. The framerate in general is acceptable (45-50ish with my current settings), but you do get the odd stuttering. I don't think it's an issue, but it's clear that this has not been optimized well enough.

Anyway, I am wondering if The Darkness II is any good. The whole lights thing sounds annoying to me, but otherwise I wouldn't mind a shooter that is at least slightly interesting.

I also have a 680GTX and havent had any issues at all although the odd stuttering to me isnt a issue when it happens rarely over a 20 hour + game.

I bought The Darkness II soley off the back of the first game which i vaguely remember as being excellent. You could do worse for a FPS it certainly has more flavour than the CoD clones .

I'd recommend anyone to try out Recettear. A wonderful game. But how are Chantelise and Fortune Summoners in comparison? Having played the Chantelise demo, I was not feeling the same vibe, quite.

It had fantastic plot, characters and twists.
But got very negatives too, worst Unreal 3 engine usage ever game would be so cool if it used CDPR engine.
Got lots of bugs and performance issuies and gameplay is meh.
It could easly be RPG of 2012 but now only a wasted potantial.

I've played a few hours and that seems to be a somewhat accurate characterization so far.

I went ahead and bought the game when I learned that Conleth Hill and James Cosmo, the actors who play Varys and Jeor Mormount, reprise their roles from the show.

Honestly I doubt anyone who isn't already a fan of the franchise would even consider buying this game, however from the perspective of a GRRM fan, I'd say it seems to be quite worth it, especially at 50% off.

The game is set 15 years after Robert Baratheon defeated the Targaryens and took the Iron Throne, so there is some overlap and while it is not clear how much GRRM was involved in developing the story, it is clear that he had some influence in his capacity as consultant, as it seems to fit very well into the framework of the world and characters he created. The story is well written, the majority of the voice performances are excellent, and if you are a fan of the world of ASOIAF, you don't want to pass up this opportunity to experience another small piece of the overall story.

My main gripe with this game is that you have relatively large level environments, with lots of NPCs and clutter (such as Castle Black and the city of Riverspring), but you can't interact with anyone or any of the objects. Even Dragon Age 2 permitted a bit more interaction with NPCs. Out of hundreds of NPCs in Game of Thrones, you can only interact with .001% of them.

If only they would release some sort of mod tool for this game, I'm sure there are some dedicated and talented fans willing to flesh out the world and breathe life into all these window dressing NPCs.

As for the combat, at first it seemed like I was just passively watching my character auto-attack most of the time; however, once I got the hang of it, I learned there is a lot more to it and it is actually kind of fun.

I haven't played all the different character builds and but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a great deal of class differentiation, at least not in the beginning. The game is structured in a way that you alternate between playing two different characters in different parts of Westeros, Mors Westford of the Nigh****ch dealing with an invasion of Wildlings and Alester Sarwyck, an exiled son of the Lord of Riverspring, returned from Braavos to attend his father's funeral.

You choose what's called a "combat style" when you start playing each character from among three options, and each combat style has a different proficiency with certain weapons and different "stances" or class ability trees. You start with one stance, which includes a perk tree of abilities you can learn at each level up, and when you reach level 7, I believe you can choose one new stance from three optional second stances.

Mors Combat Styles
  • Magnar: dual-wield, starts with Frenzy, can choose from Berserker, Domination or Intensity for second perk tree
  • Landed Knight: sword and shield, starts with Defense stance, can choose from Elite Knight, Domination or Frenzy for second stance
  • Hedge Knight: two-handed weapons and ranged, starts with Domination, can choose from Elite Warrior, Defense or Frenzy for second stance
Alester Combat Styles
  • Water Dancer: dagger or short sword , starts with Intensity, can choose from Master Water Dancer, Dexterity or Frenzy for second stance
  • Sellsword:  long sword, starts with Assassination, can choose from Hardened Killer, Frenzy or Defense for second stance
  • Archer: ranged weapons, starts with Dexterity, can choose from Elite Archer, Intensity or Assassination for second stance.

As you can see there is quite a lot of recycling and overlap among the second stances available for the various combat styles, and so far combat with Mors as a low level Hedge Knight did not feel very different from combat encounters with Alester as a low level Water Dancer.

In addition to the combat styles and stances, however, Mors and Alester have separate Hero Ability Trees. Mors is a warg and his abilities have to do with various attacks he can cause his dog to carry out. Alester is a Red Priest and his abilities have to do with setting his weapons on fire and causing fire damage or reviving allies with R'hllor's fire magic.

Also, whatever they paid to license the music cues from the TV series, it was well worth it. The score helps a great deal to establish the tone and setting of the game.

Anybody ever play The Longest Journey?

I was thinking about picking the pack up that has Dreamfall:Longest Journey and The Longest Journey in it. I've heard about these adventure games but never played them...

They look unique and a great take on storytelling...

Are any of the DLC worth buying? Never played any Saints Row game before, but I just bought the base SR3 game a couple days ago. The DLC seemed to be mostly vehicles or appearance related stuff.

For $3.45 it's worth it. Otherwise... Nah. I loved SR2 and liked SR3, but I think the DLC is pretty underwhelming in general.

Hard Rest $3.75. Great FPS in futuristic setting. it really taps into the old-school FPS games many of us grew up with. Lots of secrets, some environmental destruction, cool weapons, etc.
