I'm playing through ME2 as a soldier again. Last time I picked up the M-98 Widow from the Collector ship but this time I was planning to take the LMG instead.

I was wondering what the best alternative sniper is. The Viper does more damage per complete set of ammo (if you see what I mean) but it is spread out over more shots (The Viper does 4914 damage in 60 shots whereas the Mantis does 2631 in 10 shots). But then the viper might make it more worthwhile sniping regular troops...

Or maybe I should scrap the whole thing and stick with the Widow/Mattock. :?

...the Viper's almost like a scoped Mattock, isn't it? Just with less ammo, more damage and a slightly lower damage multiplier against shields and barriers.

Viper's the best. And if you have Cryo ammo, you can just shoot somebody once to freeze 'em then move to the next person, to immobilize them.

Viper+Revenant is a heck of a lot better at close range, I usually stick with that.

Viper is the best choice if you are taking the Revenant.  Comparing that to the Widow + Revenant - its been said here a bunch of times here - Mattock under ARush is broken.

This whole thread talks about that.  Revenant or Mattock

My comment sums it up here for me:

@ spartacusthegod wrote....  Adrenaline Rush doesn't necessarily make it overpowered, the gun itself is already overpowered!

If you look at the videos in the link, its the ARush that makes that gun so much better ( rather how it is not limited in the number of shots you can get in ).

From the Thread, Without AR
"Got some unwanted headshots in with the vindicator but the mattock still
came out on top.

vindicator 16.2 seconds

mattock 12.983 seconds"

That is the time to remove the Armor off a YMIR.   Mattock is better.

Under 1 ARush
Mattock completely removes the armor, Vindicator removes only 1/2 armor in an Arush.

So instead of being 20% better without AR its 50% better with AR.

Yeah if you take the Rev then the Viper makes a very nice compliment.  There are some videos on youtube comparing sniper rifle damage and while the Widow is the obvious number one, the Viper is a very close second.  I found the Rev + Viper combo to be the most enjoyable on soldier, though Mattock + Widow isnt bad either.
(Or you could use Gibbed and take all 3 super weapons for fun )

I would recommend the Viper with the Revenant. I like the Viper better than the other sniper rifles anyway.

As far as the Mattock, it is the "best" gun in the game because it has high accuracy, high damage per shot, and worst of all ridiculous rate of fire relative to the other weapons in the game.

Viper - Mattock
81.9 --- 50.4 base damage per shot
240 --- 750 rounds per minute

Thanks guys.

I probably wouldn't be doing it (considering how much I like the Widow) but I wasn't having fun playing any of the other classes. Maybe I was doing it wrong but I kept running out of ammo, life and (eventually) patience. But I didn't just want to play the same soldier again. I thought I ought to change things a bit and this is all I could come up with (apart from bumping the difficulty up).

It's actually an alright gun if you can manage the recoil.

...But I don't think I can pull the trigger 12 times a second. And you only get 80 rounds.

Wait, can you really depleat all of your ammo in ... what? 6.4 seconds for 80 rounds plus four reloads of... how long are the reloads? A second? 80 rounds in under 11 seconds?

Just keep in mind the Viper might take some getting used to if you liked the single-bolt rifles. The first time I tried it I didn't like the Viper at all and switched back to the Mantis ASAP. On my second Soldier run though I stuck it out and started liking it. It combines incredibly really well with AR. Now Revenant/Viper is my favourite Soldier load-out.

Just something to consider.

rofl the Mantis is terrible past early game. Always dump that thing asap. Sure, the Viper doesn't really handle like a sniper rifle, but the Mantis can't even OSOK past midgame, which makes it pretty terrible from Hardcore (maybe even Veteran) and up.

The Mantis is fine. It inflicts pretty heavy headshot damage in AR throughout the game. Not to mention this game isn't hard enough to warrant not going with whatever weapon you like best instead of what is best.

And I wouldn't know about the Hardcore/Veteran thing, barring the tutorial on my first character I ever only played on Insanity.

That was why many people didn't think the rate of fire divider was applied to the Mattock under adrenaline rush, because they could not hit the max ROF normally.

Really? I can't stand the Mantis. But obviously you can play whatever weapon you like, as it's a single player game and unless you're just starting now, should have more than enough experience with optimal builds to move on to novelty choices. Anyway, my own personal preference is actually the Viper over the Widow, since I'm more of a DMR guy than a more traditional sniper-type guy.

I prefer the Viper to the Mantis/Incisor (its what I'm using for my current SniperCaster Sentinel), but when I played my Revenant Soldier I never really bothered switching to the sniper rifle. The Revenant is also you need, especially when coupled with Heightened AR. Great fun just blowing enemies away on Insanity with pure firepower and barely having to switch thermal clips.
