Yes I know another 100% CPU usage thread :( but I'm going to be specific on what I'd like to know about a few things :).

1: Why does DAO use 100% of all the CPU cores ? and is it completely necessary for this, I mean its a little odd unless its something that needs to be patched (hope thats it an soon!)

2:if it is made to use 100% why ?
That just heats up your CPU like mad when constantly used at 100%, would have been better off balancing it between the CPU and GPU. As it is my CPU hits between 125F-131F while the games loaded, I don't even have to have a saved game loaded for my temps to raise like that either which really bothers me >.<. and my room stays between 67-75F fyi

I mean comon I can play Crysis with ultra high settings and my CPU only gets to about 117 while I'm playing X_X so whats with this game ? it not like the graphics are ground breaking on this game, there nice but not what I expected

Heres my PC spec's for those that would ask about it later lols, this system ides at around 78-82F some times less

AM2 X2 5400+ @ 2.8GHz
4Gz DDR2 800MHz
GigaByte HD 4890OC (Stock Zalman cooler)
Seagate 750G HDD 7200.12 SATA
MSI K9A2GM V3 mobo
Antek TPII 550Watt
Aspire X-pider 21" full tower case (2 80mm intakes, 2 80mm out takes and 1 80mm side intake)

This game can use up to SEVEN cores

On a 2 core system it spawns 2 worker threads and will use 100% of your CPU

On a 4 core system it spawns 3 worker threads and will use up to 75% of your CPU

On an 8 core system it spawns 7 worker threads and will use up to 87% of your CPU

Crysis is a DX 10 game and the DX 10 spec force almost EVERYTHING to be done on the GPU (s). This is a DX 9 game and many things, including graphical things are done by the cpu or PhysX card.

If you have a PhysX card or a second GPU (and are not in SLI mode), it will ease the CPU use a bit.

But... 100% CPU use shouldn't overheat your box.. if it is, you have a cooling issue that you need to fix... your issue is with your machine.. not the game :)

Even so, even at 100% your cpu shouldn't get much over 40-50c. If it's going higher, it's time to clean the dust out of your box. Either that or your system has poor cooling options.

My CPU never gets over 131-133F and I am using XP so I'm also playing Crysis in DX9 on ultra high settings (changed the .DLL's names etc was that easy lolz) though I will admit my case needs to be replaced some time soon, 80mm fans are a waste of money anymore. and aren't those 8 core CPUs server CPU's at least that's what I've been hearing >.> correct me if I'm wrong Oo ?

Yeah, answer me this:

1) why does the game idle at 100% cpu usage at the title screen before loading your game?
2) why does the game not suffer any performance hits (at least on my machine) when the core affinity is set to 1 of 2 cores?

Nope i7 Quad Core with HT technology. HT technology hasn't been around since the P4 HT, but it's back. So now people with i7s get 8 cores. They are NOT true 8 cores though. They are 4 cores that can do 2 threads in parallel... still faster than just 4 plain cores. However, there are mobos out there with DUAL Intel and AMD quad cores on them Apple makes them as well as other gaming mobo companies for TRUE 8 core performance

1) It's the way it was programmed. It does that on my dual core laptop also. There's no other more simple answer than that. WHAT it's doing? I have no idea, but it's doing something to chew up the cores. It does a similar thing on quad cores. 50% at startup and 60-75% during game play. I suspect on the title screen it's just keeping the cpus busy with something looping, no idea what it is or why, but they do it. But ANY machine out there should handle 100% non stop cpu use - unless you've OCed it w/o proper cooling.. then that's the USER'S fault

2) the game CAN use from 1-7 threads. If you set affinity to 1 CPU and BAN the game from running on another CPU(s), it will sacrifice something, someplace. You may not notice it on your machine, but others with slower cpus will, you may also notice slower load times or other things.

Also most intel and AMD cpus will auto overlock themselves if just 1 core is being used constantly which may also hide the performance loss if u force it to one CPU. I'll test it on my desktop. I'll FORCE the game to 1 core only when it can use up to 7 and see what it does :)

With affinity FORCED to "CPU 7" (one cpu): avg of 20-40 FPS while running around camp
With affinty set to ALL processors: avg of 50-90 FPS while running around camp

don't forget when I load the game it spawns SEVER worker threads.. so the impact of me going to 1 CPU is quite large. On dual cores, they run 2 threads, so the impact may not be as severe

and this is just a quick test in game. I need to test it in combat with spells flying about. My laptop has 2 cores so I'll test it as well, but it has FAST dual cores (3.4Ghz)

Wow thats insane to say the least :o but that still leaves the burning question that most want to know an that is:
Why does DAO use 100% ALL THE TIME! lolz. and btw I get a constant 55-60+ FPS when I'm not getting a random FPS hit, though I'd like to know whats causing this FPS hit as I doubt its a heat issue but never know I'll have to look into it more but other then the 100% CPU usage and the random FPS drops the game runs fine. lolz

It only uses 2 cores 100% all the time

with 4 or 8 it CAN use up to 75 or 87% of the cpu, but there's always a base minimum of 2 "cores" always being fully used. It's just the way the game is. It wants 2 FULL cores at least.

how nice , never before heard my pc make those transpirant noises, annoying after 5h of playing

someone should really fix this
