This man is truly despicable.  Not only that, but shallow.  He does everything for greed.  He is probably the most un-complex character in the game.  Someone should start a thread entitled just that, which will someday grow to 1000 pages.

Anyway, I get to the Rescue the Queen quest, and I'm having a time with the guards in the dungeon.  I start a battle and two rooms full empty.  Then a dog overwhelms Morrigan *through the wall*, and, while I'm having fun watching people get frozen and fall to the ground, she dies.  She gets resurrected by Wynne, but then Wynne dies.  Ow.  I can't remember the last time I had 2 characters die during a battle.  That made me stop slouching in my chair.

So, we make it through the dungeon, doing better this time, no one else is killed, and reach Arl Howe.  I was hoping to give him more of a tongue lashing, but the conversation is brief.  I was not given the opportunity to spit in his face, but fortunately that came later.

The battle begins, and well, my group is level 19/18, so I guess that's sort of overkill.  The 2 mages are Crushing Prisoned, and to make a short story even shorter, everyone gets dropped but Howe.  He then receives Death Mark, Cone of Cold (which he resists), Winter's Grasp (which freezes him ... LOL), and lastly Death Hex.  From here, it is over rather quickly.  I was kind of surprised.  I was expecting an orange Blood Mage to be with him or something. :)

Well, while that may have been somewhat underwhelming, I was about to have one of the most exciting fights in the game.  I went back to the main floor of the estate and took one step out the little entry way.  About 10 guards attacked me and 10 more came streaming down the hall.  My group was still in the entry way, which was just a tiny room.

The guards piled in and started wailing on us.  Weapons and magic was flying all over the place.  The guards started falling and bodies started mounting.  More guards were pouring through the entrance.  I said "come on in, there's room for all!" =D  Most of the time, I couldn't even see what was going on in there.  Oh, there were dogs too.  I hate dogs.  I always focus on them first. ;)

LOL

So, finally, they were all dead.  All destroyed.  Collecting the loot took a while.

That was great.  This is why I play RPGs.

Arl Howe is actually an excellent villain. You can't help but hate his guts and be utterly disgusted by him and his actions throughout the game.

If you look a little deeper into his character, he is actually a flawless depiction of a clinical psychopath. He meets all of the diagnostic criteria (much of which you can only see in retrospect or by being extremely observant, as it would be IRL) down to the last detail just about.

The strength of his character is further aided by Tim Curry's amazing (as always) voice acting - no one could pull off a villainous psychopath better.

Anyway, here's a little trick: if you're playing as a Human Noble, take your dog with you next time you raid his estate. Once Howe is dead, stand your dog next to his corpse and interact with him until he "relieves himself on an inconspicuous area nearby."

Just a nice little touch I came up with, since you don't have the opportunity to do worse (he deserved more).

I am sorry to hear his body stays in the dungeon. He should be strung up at the city gates for all to see, with a sign that says "This is what happens to anyone who sides with Loghain."

Actually Loghain should be ashamed of associating with Howe. Loghain really is a patriot and believes that what he is doing is grim, it sucks, but it is what is best for his country. The guy is paranoid after continually being at war for 30 years. He's shell shocked - but not evil.

Howe . . . could care less about the well being of anyone but himself. He leaves ruin in his wake. Ambient conversation pertaining to him always points out ways Howe just lets things go to the dogs around him while he rises to power.

Once you get good at the game MyName, you can try this (what I do): I enter Howe's room, my party kills off his minions, but then I hit the "hold position" button and I run them way away from combat so it's just me and him one on one.

It's the only truly satisfying way to kill my family's murderer.

Arl Howe does indeed seem like one of the worst allies a man could have, he just does whatever helps him and he doesn't really care about Ferelden (or the family's honour (Nathaniel Howe in Awakening))
