been enjoying Sam an Max the Devil's Toybox. I got to part 3 before all the big games of the year came out so I put them back on the back log but I am definetly going to finish them at some point.
I'm not a fan of the genre in the slightest but the humor of Sam and Max got me into it.

I still list The Secret of Monkey Island as my favourite game across genres and ages.

And I also disagree that BioWare is making adventure games. They don't want to, game design philosophy wise. I think they SHOULD try, as their strengths would play well to the adventure game scenario... and, to be honest, I have in the past said I believe Mass Effect is more adventure game than RPG... but they aren't trying to make adventure games, and they are certainly missing key elements.
I really wish they'd try. A set story with set protagonists would REALLY play to their focus on ICONIC and CINEMATIC.

Indeed. The real strengths of Bioware (dialogue and characterization) would shine in a graphic adventure environment.

Personally, I feel the genre works best when the game starts with a murder.
This creates a sense of mystery and danger compensating for the lack of action
Broken Sword is a good example of this
and Shadow of Memories/Destiny qualifies
(borderline cases Shenmue and Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy do it)

Syberia...death from natural causes...boring  (and why is the heroine so hydrophobic..?)

and moving away
Just played Monkey Island from the recent re-release ..good but not as good as the praise suggested (That second cannibal sounds very familiar....)

Adventure games are what got me into gaming, originally. Myst was my first, then Riven, then every single game that followed in the series. I also played The Longest Journey, Syberia, Schizm, yada yada yada. Basically, if a box said it was made by The Adventure Company, I bought it.

I still have many of them in their original boxes stashed away somewhere.

I switched over to console gaming, and to me, adventure games really don't have much of a place in that realm. Pixel hunt, you say? Bah - with a controller, that would be awful...easy, and very annoying.
