What I remember (and was able to peruse on the Internet) is that ‘we’, i.e. the customers (the Dragon Age: Origins
fans especially) were promised a game that was significantly improved compared to the first game. Quite a few professional reviewers (especially some of the early ones) gave the game very high scores, completely out of proportion.
Frankly, those 18 euros I spent feel, so far, as at least 8 to many:unsure:. It has marginally improved some minor technical points, but failed to address some key issues with Dragon Age: Origins (drab, obsolete graphics, incoherent and uninspired visual style) and made some even worse (incoherent world composed of linked, rather small and repetitive claustrophobic environments). Other ‘improvements’ (voiced protagonist, dialog wheel) many people feel conflicted about; personally, I like the idea of voicing your protagonist, but unless you are given really good voices and a substantial range of choices in them, it feels very limiting. Personally, I did not particularly like the male and female Hawke voices; they used very neutral semi-upper middle class British accents which felt very unengaging to me.
The game also took away one of the strong points of Dragon Age: Origins, the relatively broad options for choosing and customizing your character (and party members).
Combine this with well-presented but not particularly memorable characters (prominent anatomical characteristics aside) and I am not exactly having a blast right now.
The funny thing is, it does not surprise me that the game turned out this way. Dragon Age: Origins, while I generally enjoyed it, is way too overrated in my opinion. It already suffered many of the weaknesses of its sequel. In the end, I felt it was just north of the line between mediocrity and good: a bit less content, variety and overall quality, and I would have hated it. And this is exactly what happened with the sequel. Even while some fans and critics have been overly harsh, I think I can understand the sentiment now.
