although he chose duty over his love, he still had feelings for her and even died to save her.
If you dont "harden" him, when you ask him after the sex scene how he sees you 2 going on, he will give you some totally lame one-night-stand excuse about duty and honor driving you apart. Basically he screws you and dumps you like a hot potato first time he get a chance.
Then he dumps you again in favor of some *eventual* future queen and getting *eventual* future heir that could be just a frigment of his imagination since he is tainted too, so no heirs guarantee. But he still dumps you *now* because of eventual future events.
Then suddenly he forgets all his duty and honor and queens and heirs and his land and people, and goes off to get himself killed over you.
So very consistant.
After 7th playthrough and all possible endings and convo options I cant even imagine falling for that weakling anymore.
Or you can always choose the "I won't let you go, no matter what." option after the tent scene with a non-hardened Alistair. He responds with, "All right, I think I can handle that." or something to that effect - no drama, no hint of future dumping, etc. You're trying to use one line to justify bashing Alistair with after getting dumped, when there's clearly another dialogue option there.
Say what you want, but I think the non-hardened Alistair was really trying to do his duty if you force him into becoming king. So what if he changes his mind later? It's pretty clear during the break-up that he does love the PC and that he's making a painful/difficult decision. In the end, his love for the PC wins out (assuming you do not go through with Morrigan's ritual), and it's tragic but not inconsistent with what he really feels in my opinion. I remember one of his lines involving him realizing what an idiot he'd been before he sacrifices himself - you know, he basically admits that he loves the PC enough to give up everything for her.
He's hardly weak - if he were, he'd have curled up into a ball after Ostagar and sucked on his thumb for the rest of the game. Instead, he deals with it, even if he does have his mopey moments.
** EDIT: Belated my bad on that - I got the immediate post-tent dialogue mixed up with the "Where do you see this going between us?" thingy. OOPS! In the interests of accuracy let me get this ALL straight.
Immediately after sleeping together:
Alistair: So...What now? Where do we go from here?
PC: We stay together no matter what happens.
Alistair: Right. I can handle that. I hope.
Alistair: Before we go, have I told you that I love you? I did? Well, it won't kill you to hear it again, will it?
As for the "Where do you see this going between us?" dialogue:
PC: Where do you see this thing going between us?
Alistair: Wow, you don't hold back on the hard questions, huh?
Alistair: I don't know where this is going. We have the Blight to think of, first, don't we? Everything else seems so...distant.
PC: I won't let you go, Alistair, no matter what.
Alistair: Let's hope we have that option.
Alistair: This isn't really the time for this conversation. Please, let's just talk about this another time.
Still think he doesn't sound wish-washy after the tent scene, so I'm satisfied. And he doesn't sound overly dramatic in the other scene (if you go with "I won't let you go...").
