I think the moral of the story here...is that it's simply impossible to be female and not fall in love with him unless you TRY.

I'm giggling here because I just got done with my first play through...and there was never a moment when Alistair thought he could leave me. We were always googley eyed towards each other the whole time. I guess it's my knight in shining armor complex shining through in all its glory. I definitely played my game with keeping him happy in mind the. whole. time.

I almost got one of us killed at the end and nearly had a heart attack.

I was an elf the first time through and we adored each other too. I had a similar experience except for the fact that I didn't make him king.

I couldn't have ruled with him because they won't let an elf rule. I had pretty much the same conversations you had, and everything though. Did he try to run away from Morrigan in the bed in yours too? That made me feel a little better about the whole situation.

I liked the end of my story AND the epilogue. Presents issues for the expansion if Alistair is an NPC though....but I'll let you see the end for yourself :) Personally, I see it as a hopeful situation.

Kudos for not using any gifts...I only gave him his mother's amulet and Duncan's Shield...because they really meant something to him.

I do have a second game going that I'm about halfway through where I'm playing an elf romancing him, and in that one I do NOT intend to put him on the throne. I want the "let's run off into the sunset happily together as Grey Wardens" ending :) I think it's nice that they put in mostly happy endings (if you can deal with Morrigan) either way.

Hee! He totally kept crawling backwards up the bed away from her and she kept creeping closer. So cute. Although, I was honestly surprised by the annoyance the scene initially caused me, since I'm not the type to have a problem with my man sleeping with someone else, but I was literally like "WHAT? You're going to make me WATCH it? Unneccessary, Bioware!" (and I'm not the type to have a problem with watching, usually, either) I think Alistair just incites that kind of reaction because he's so adorable and sweet and romantic that I kind of want to protect him a little.

I gave him his mother's amulet because of the meaning, and meant to do the same with the shield, but then I got thrown into the final battle stuff and forgot all about it until reading through this thread just now. Must remedy that asap. You know, I tried to hold out for Zevran in my second game, but I just can't seem to stay away from Alistair. He's just so much more interesting.

I can't wait to see the ending! :) If I live that long. Man these final battles on the way to the archdemon are grueling.

I totally agree. You have to TRY not to. I tried in my second game I have going and there was just NO WAY. I tried with Zevran, even with Leliana, and I just couldn't stay away from him. He's too perfect. I can't stand for him to be unhappy even for a second. The people of Ferelden have it all wrong; I'm not doing all this to save Ferelden, I'm doing it for my sweet, darling Alistair. ;)

I finally finished my "perfect" level 60 Paragon and Renegade characters for ME2, so last night I created yet another human female noble to bring into Awakenings, with certain objectives in mind:  getting the archery achievement, finally romancing Leliana, and declaring myself future queen at the Landsmeet while only friends with Alistair, in order to be both Princess-Consort and Chancellor at the same time.

I have a feeling this is going to be tough, because Leliana seems to get jealous really easy, and it's really hard to keep Alistair from falling for a female PC, unless you're out and out rude to him, and I don't want to do that...it's like kicking a puppy!  And the rose...sob...I want that rose.  Posted Image

SIGH.  Roleplaying is hard sometimes.

I've done this, well, with Zevran, not Leliana, and it's very easy to not have Alistair fall in love.  Just don't flirt.  When he flirts, bring him back on track.  And the ending slide is much better.  Well, I preferred being ruler and savior and adored by the people rather than just the adored bride.  Of course, then Zevran and my PC ran off to rebuild the gray wardens, but that's a different issue.

Edit: Warning, if you ever romanced Alistair, even if you break up with him, he stays in love and you're still just the adored bride.  You can still run off with Leliana or Zevran, though.

LOL, you were my direct inspiration for this playthrough, I had no idea you could be both Chancellor and queen at the same time until you mentioned doing it.  It really is tough, I went to Redcliffe straight after Lothering, and just by telling Alistair that I liked him for who he is and not for his parentage, he went from neutral to interested!  Now that I've seen your edit, I'm going to reload from before we get there to try again...does the game count "interested" as being in a romance?  I swear, I wasn't TRYING to flirt!!!

I don't know if it does or not!  I was not willing to take that chance when I tried this.  Alistair is pretty needy, so yes, telling him you like him at any time will get him into the romance zone.  He actually is very sweet.  He and Leliana are at times difficult to not romance.  Oh, you can still be chancellor even if he is in love or ever loved -- it's just the beginning slide which is so much better.

Hahaha, on a related note, I was testing something and switched Ali into love on a play through just before the landsmeet.  Giving him the answer regarding an heir, "not for lack of trying," when you two haven't slept together gives one of the funniest responses in the game.  You only get that option when in love -- when at friendly it's "well, that's an awkward thought" or something like that.

I did that with my first character, a city elf, but having now played a Dalish elf and on my second city elf female, I started to see things with a bit more of a nuanced eye.  My Dalish elf woman arranged for Alistair and Anora to marry and kept herself as his lover.  As I saw it, a Dalish is pragmatic about survival, and those of medieval mindset knew that having a strong king with a clear succession meant the literal survival of your people.  Ferelden is obviously in a precarious positions, surrounded by enemies and torn by civil war.

Here's something else that came about in my mind as I caught more of the nuances through repeated playthroughs:  When you meet Cailan as a city elf, he asks you how things are in the alienage.  He obviously has no clue, but seems shocked at your report and tells you he is going to look into it after Ostagar.  Put this together with the fact that Anora brags about having run the country for 5 years.  Cailan is clueless but wants to help your people, Anora is capable but obviously knows what is going on and doesn't give a damn.  Would you really put her back into sole power?  And in fact the epilogue does have Alistair improving the lot of elves moreso than Anora does.  Anora will make the alienage a bann but the epilogue makes clear that it's basically an empty gesture, whereas Alistair bucks opposition in order to put an elf on his privy council.  Also, to me it was not a happy thing to see Alistair step out of his rightful kingship and say that his heirs disclaim the throne forever.  My Dalish character loved him, and for that reason wanted to see him become king even if it meant sharing him.

I'm going to end up playing the opposite, I think.  My Dalish elf is all noble and knightly and romantic like Alistair (heh I'm basically playing me) and so her canon ending will be to let Alistair be king (maybe let Anora rule too - probably this as I think its the best political situation) and give him up for the greater good.  My next play through will be a city elf who will be much more jaded and practical, I think, and so she'll have no problem being the mistress to get the guy she wants.

Of course, right now, I'm playing with Anora as queen and Alistair by my side, just to satisfy my girly romantic nature.  :P   I'll have to go back and do the DLC and some quests with my canon ending, but oh well, it just prolongs the experience for me.  My first play-through I kept Loghain not knowing that it would drive Alistair away, and I hated that!  It just wasn't right not having him on my team - he's been on every party that I've ever had out!

Oh, and a tip.  Try having just Alistair and no one else on your party, at least once.  Give him a kiss and see what happens. ^_^

Now now, this is a love Alistair thread.  I actually almost wrote the same thing, but I realized Alistair DOES deserve a trash-free zone.  So I invite you to head on over to one of the Zevran love threads and trash Ali there!

You know, if he were a real guy that the real me had met, I'd probably feel the same way in the long run. I do prefer my men more decisive. But given the position the PC is thrown into here, as being the one called upon to make all the decisions, YOU get to be the strong one, and when in that position, well, I like having someone to balance out the other side (I am decisive in real life when strongly motivated, but I'm a better first mate than a captain). Plus, I do see the makings of strength in him, he's got a spine in there, he just needs to stop being afraid to fail.

Not that I've analyzed my feelings or anything ;)

I can definitely see that viewpoint. It makes total logical sense. If I played through a third or fourth time, I'd probably go for that myself. My whole viewpoint is based on the fact that I continue to stand somewhat outside my character--or maybe get myself too tangled up in it?--because I'm a sucker for as happy a romantic ending as possible and deep down I know it's just a game. Not very "PC" of me I know ;) After getting that satisfaction a couple of times I could probably be more in character with regard to background and game play and make the better game choices. Nicely done with picking up on all those nuances, btw. They totally went over my head. I only just finished my first Landsmeet today and I'm still just all awestruck by how awesome the game is. :D

Oh, I totally get it. My first character I was so caught up in the romance story- I think I was shocked to find such a sweet love story in the middle of a gorey video game- I didn't have much presence of mind about it, either. :D

Thing is, I really don't think there is a completely happy ending to this game. There are degrees of satisfaction, but something is always "off." That's probably a strong point of the story, I'd have to say. You can get a semi-Hollywood ending, but there is a demon baby or a tyrannical queen waiting in the shadows.

I kind of love that they make you make a hard decision...a really hard decision.

Doyou love Alistair enough to let him sleep with Morrigan.  I'd gotten so damn attached that I seriously had to close my eyes to hit the button. Isn't that nuts?

As far as the people who dislike him becuase he's a bit of a pansy...I get it...kind of.  Everyone likes different
kinds of men.  It doesn't make sense in the game for him to take total control...so yeah he's going to be a little weak.

Sense of humor is what gets me every single time.  Yeah, he's a little sappysometimes about Duncan..but hell, he had a pretty horrible upbringingand Duncan actually valued him.  It was a father figure thing...mostguys will get a little sappy about their dads...especially if they die in a violent way.

Most of the time though...he laughs everything off, even the really rough stuff.

God...I actually cried the first time I went through the market district and talked to him. Being the giant sap I am I chose, "I love you"  and the "And I loveyou.  Always." Thing nailed me...nicely done BioWare.

Having to watch with Morrigan made my stomach hurt...yeah...that whole virginity before your character thing makes that a little hard towatch.

I could go on forever about the romance stuff with Alistair.  Probably will.  I'm glad this thread is here for me to
obsess a little bit...and until the expansion is in my hands andI can't have him in my party, I'm going to delude myself into thinking I can...so our romance can go on and on and on. lol

Lol I almost felt the same way, except I didn't cry but I was touched, and smiled. And having the conversion about the ritual with Alistair, forcing him to do it, made me sad. And then I had to watch it too!?!? I almost growled there when I watched it, luckily she blew out the candle, but poor Alistair didn't look to happy.

Its funny that you can get attached enough to a character that you get feelings for it. I like Alistair as a character, spite I think he was whining a bit to much about Duncan, but I do understand why. So it is fine with me.

"He didnt look to happy"?
have you seen his faceexpresion in that scen - Maybe he cant help it, but he sure likes it!

But that was not really why I whanted to post in this thread...

Al my female character ends up with Alistair sooner or later. I cant help it! Posted Image
But through my playthroughs I have come across some rather disturbing cracks in the storyline.
Most of the with my eleven mage. I choose not to harden him and not to make him king but made him go through with the ritual (tuff). All for the same purpose, to be able to be with him forever!

But there are som seriuse wrongs in the dialogoptions. He still talks like if he was to be king.
Another thing I think is a huge problem is where the * he is at the celebration. He is mentioned in the text after, "stayed with his love" and all that, but he is nowhere to be found at the cournation.

Anyone else of you noticed this?

I did that.  Just the run to Redcliffe to tell Arl Eamon we were ready for Landsmeet (No one else says anything, anyway, and he's a forced party member.)  So I did the same thing at Warden's Keep and made out while watching the snow.

Very sweet.

I found him at the coronation....he asks what you're supposed to say to the other wardens...decides it's best to keep the details of "the ritual" to yourself...then says he can't wait to be alone with you.

He then talks about how he doesn't want to be there when the crowds are fawning over you because it's not his thing...

Also, before you convince him to sleep with Morrigan...he feels a little guilty for giving up the throne...sad day.

That speech he gives...where he talks about how awesome you are, right before the battle of Denerim is pretty awesome too. My brother goes, "We're lucky he didn't give that speech before the landsmeet...you couldn't have kept them from making him king."
