I am playing through on an elf mage. I plan to go through with the ritual and I am going to toughen him up so he won't dump me and I can be his mistress.

How much difference does it make if he marries Anora. I really don't want him to do it because she's such a dishonest little b***h, but if I makes for a better ending, I will.

Please let me know, thanks!Image IPB

Well, I liked this ending when I did the same with my Dalish character.  If you know he has to marry some noblewoman, why not make it one you know he can't stand.  LOL Besides the whole factor of uniting Ferelden and healing the rift of the civil war.  He will be angry with you at first but if you've "hardened" him, will accept it and I found the ending lines very cute.  Little spoiler, paraphrased from memory:

spoiler...

A: I can't wait to be alone with you, these official functions drive me nuts.
PC: What about Anora?
A: Let her get her own conquering hero!  I've got mine.

I thought that was sweet.  Image IPB  And the epilogue does make it out that they are a good ruling pair.  In my PC's case, I had her go off to restore the Grey Wardens and it says that eventually Alistair came to join her.  I am guessing that would be after an heir is installed or something.

The only part that made me grind my teeth was that before Anora will agree to it, you have to agree to her terms that she'll be the leader of the pair.  My character agreed to it just to appease her, knowing that Alistair was not nearly as weak and incompetent as she was trying to make him out to be and that she wasn't going to get away with being sole ruler.

I think he says that anyways, you just have to pick a different dialogue.   If you say "You don't really think that, do you?" when he says he's just lucky enough to have survived when the rest didn't, he'll say "No, what I really think is that I was lucky enough to survive with you."  If you pick "And what does that make me?"  he answers with "The reason I think we're going to win this".

I've had him refer to his luck in both dialogue options. But it has to be in just the right point of the relationship. It's tricky. If you choose "And what does that make me?" and you've timed it right, he'll respond, "The reason I said I was lucky." and walk off.

That Gaider is an evil, evil man.  How the heck can Alistair get even more romantic than I already thought he was?!

I might well take this path with my HNF, and play as if we're hoping that Eamon will get better on his own, without our intervention, and save this bit for last and just try to play the romance really carefully so that she's interested, but unwilling to commit to a commoner.  Don't know if I could make it work, but I think there's enough dialog options to at least sort of do it, and certainly enough gifts to keep Alistair happy at the end.

The thing with Alistair going into the Landsmeet is this, do what he wants and you'll be able to get what you want (except for being Queen). If he's not hardened, he doesn't want to be king. Don't make him king and ride off into the sunset.

If he is hardened, he does want to be king. Make him king, and you can convince him to do what makes him happy, for once (ie "you"). You can also be his Chancellor, which seems pretty awesome. Or don't make him king and ride off into the sunset.

It's frustrating if you go into the Landsmeet blind, especially since the whole "hardening" scenario is so counter-intuitive. The game can't account for infinite dialogues about why his dumping you is a foolish, kneejerk reaction and whatnot (although, I would love some sort of typed in rant mechinism at that point) so you just have to deal with the fact that his romance needs to be approached the same way as any of the other quests.

Funnily enough, I was able to reboot the romance after he dumped me by a) not sleeping with him beforehand and B) not ever having the "So, if you were raised in the Chantry..." conversation. Back at camp, after talking "about us" I talked to him about licking lamp posts and, suddenly, it was like the break up never happened. Silly game.

Sir Jools, When I had the 'get dumped by Alistair' scene, I had the response option along the lines of "You're an Ass."

I had to pick that one......

I was a bit confused when Alistair was referring to himself as the new king in my game...... considering he renounced the throne in front of everyone. Then he sacrificed himself to save his love and didn't allow me to do anything about it, which explained what happened as his mind was addled at the time by having to make such a rough choice :'(

I also had The Arl's wife in my codex down as sacrificing herself for Connor even though I made it so they all lived.... not quite sure what's going on there.

Yes, I got that same thing with Isolde & Connor. Per my usual course of action, I got the mages from the Circle Tower to help out so that Isolde would live...only my Codex says she's deader than a doornail. Interesting how she's still walking around though. LOL

I'm just curious what type of character you were playing when you hardened him and rode off into the sunset.  Also, had you won the Landsmeet?  I ask because in my non-human games and my human mage game I've never had the chance to make Anora queen, even when I supported her. Hardened Al jumps at the chance to be king and the game moves right into the dumping scene.    I'd love to have a different option.  Also, just curious how one becomes Chancellor - another option I've not had.

If I'm playing a non-human in particular I usually don't harden Alistair and we do go off to be grey wardens together - let Anora rule!

If you want the option of naming Anora queen, you have to duel Loghain yourself and execute him yourself. If Alistair is hardened and if he duels Loghain he will kill him on the spot and name himself king (unless you are a human noble in a relationship with him).

If you kill Loghain, you'll get to pick who rules  Choose Anora and Alistair is free to be yours!

Becoming Chancellor is an option at the end of the game. When Alistair tells you can receive a boon from the King of Ferelden, choose the "I only wish to continue to serve the crown" or whatever the first option is and you become his Chancellor. I like this for when he's king and my PC can't be queen (or doesn't want to be queen).

I just got done watching a video of the conversation Alistair has with you when you first enter Redcliff and he tells you about his parentage. It was totally different from mine. In mine (through all plays) he just blurts out he is a bastard and then talks about Isolde and basic stuff. This one had a lot more flirting and him talking about his love of cheese and being thankful that he survived with you at Ostagar. How do you get those conversations. Is it based on earlier ones, or a higher approval rating. Does anyone know.

The options do change as Alistair's feelings for the PC increase.  I just re-ran the convo with saves where Alistair's approval rating is at 24 and 36 (neutral) and had a fairly neutral chats with him with him.  However, I usually take my PC to Redcliffe later in the game when Alistair has moved somewhere into the "Care" range.  At this point after he tells the PC about his heritage and Isode's concerns he tells you that that's all he has to say.

If you choose the response, Are you sure?  You're not hiding anything else are you?  Alistair will say:  Other than an unholy love of fine cheese and a minor obsession with my hair, that's it.  Just the prince thing.

Thanks!   I'll have to replay the end of my mage game and see if I can get this option.  I chose to have her stay with the Grey Wardens and Alistair does eventually rejoin her.  I've always wondered how one got the Chancellor option.

In regards to naming Anora as queen,  I've played several times and usually my PC is the one who kills Loghain and gotten to choose.  In my human mage game I'd hardened Alistair, supported Anora as queen and dueled and killed Loghain myself only to have Alistair declare himself king without my having any opportunity to choose. THis was followed immediately by his attempting to dump my mage.   As you said, this didn't happen with my human noble.

I picked that one too, but it was nowhere near close to what I would have liked to say. Actually, I am very surprised by this game: it's got very strong themes (rape, prostitution, NSA sex, homosexuality, cheating and all that), but it features an extremely mild language.

I know the F-word would be out of place for a fantasy background, but something like "I hope you die horribly" or "son of a darkspawn w***e" would have been a nice addition to some of the dialogues.

By the way, how do you "harden" Alistair? (no pun intended!)

Did Anora betray you at the Landsmeet?  That might be one of the reasons he names himself king.  I've only had to fight the pre-duel/pre-execution battle once.  Every other time I've told Anora that I would support her as queen as long as she speaks out against Loghain, and she does.

After his personal quest you choose the option "Everyone is out for themselves.  You should learn that." and then, when he brings it up again, choose anything but "No, that's not what I meant!" and, viola! he's hardened.  It feels wrong in execution (especially if you're in a romance with him and have seen his dream in the Fade- you just want to give him a hug) but it  is ultimately for the best.

No Anora didn't betray me at Landsmeet and did speak out against Loghain prior to the duel. I usually win Landsmeet but then am challenged by Loghain anyway, duel him, win and kill him.  This is followed by Arl Eamon declaring Alistair as king only to have Al say, "what? who decided this?"  followed by Anora's jumping in again to claim the throne and setting up the PC as a decisionmaker.  I've had this occur with both hardened and unhardened Alistair in all previous games except the one with my human mage. I usually don't harden Alistair when I'm playing a non-human and we stay as grey wardens. However, in my mage game I hardened him, only to have everything play as scripted up to the point where Alistair usually protests. This time he didn't but accepted the kingship and we jumped straight to the dumping scene.  From what others have said (in this thread and others), this is the typical outcome for hardened Alistair in this situation.  I was interested that you seemed to have a different outcome with a non-human PC and wondered how that had been managed. Image IPB

Hardened Al doesn't put himself forward as king ONLY if you're playing a human noble? How odd. Why do you suppose that is?

If she dies the Codex will say she lived.  Somebody messed up the code on that one.  Fortunately the game knows what really happened.  The Codex does that with a few quests as well.

I think it's because you have no other opportunity to declare yourself queen.  You can't propose beforehand, so if you're in a relationship with him you'll still get the chance.  I went in once as his friend and he declared himself king, when the save before (in a romance) he didn't and I got to choose.

The only times I've ever had him declare himself king was when Anora betrayed us and I was a non-HN/not in a relationship with him.  Every other time Eamon will say that it's decided that Alistair will take his throne, Alistair will balk, Anora will offer to take it, and then Eamon lets you choose.  At that point, you can crown Alistair alone, crown Anora alone, try to crown Alistair with you beside him or try to get him and Anora to marry.

So...if Alistair is hardened and you pick him as King without Anora...you can keep the relationship going?

Just curious about to start a human mage female run where I am romancing Al for the first time...I wanted to make sure I get her happy ending right.

You can keep it going in any scenario (unless you spare Loghain) if he is hardened.  You just have to choose the correct dialogue choices after the Landsmeet if you make him king (with or without Anora).  There are persuade checks involved, but I've done it without any of the persuade options for a slight hit to approval (which can be made up by a gift or two).

I did this without any approval hit and without a Persuade.  I believe it was "no one can tell the king what to do" and "but I love you, doesn't that matter?" and then telling him you forgive him for bringing it up.

I had this last time, with a city elf rogue who was with Zevran, and was surprised as well.  I don't think that had ever happened in my playthroughs even with a hardened Alistair.  I guessed that it was due to a dialogue choice I had made earlier on.  The one that came to mind was that I told Loghain, when you first see him in Denerim with Arl Eamon and Howe, that "the throne belongs to Maric's only living heir."

My female Dalish rogue has gotten the option on who to put on the throne the 2 times that I have played through Landsmeet with her. Both times Alistair was hardened, we won all but one vote and Anora spoke out against her father. The first time I had Alistair duel Loghain and kill him, threw Anora in the tower and made Alistair King. The second time my pc dueled and killed Loghain and put Anora on the throne alone and kept Alistair for myself. After the duel I had the same scenario as Star58. I also had the option to use persuasion and suggest Alistair as King with me as Queen, but I didn't choose that beceause I figured it was an evil attempt to get my hopes up.  There must be something else that triggers whether or not you get to choose. But I can't think of what it would be, unless it is pre-Landsmeet conversations or your level of coersion and cunning.

*grins*  you were wise not to suggest to A that your rogue be queen.  I choose the option as a test with my City Elf Rogue  and a non-hardened Alistair and was told that he couldn't because Fereldans would have a hard time accepting a bastard so having a non-human as well was definitely out.  I reloaded and put Anora on the throne (so there Alistair!).

I agree there's a combination of conditions; keep trying to figure out what they might be but haven't succeeded completely.  I always have high persuasion and cunning -- I know how much Bioware relies on these in setting up game conditions!  I would love to figure out what those conditions might be.  I know I won Landsmeet by all but one vote as well.  OTOH, maybe I need to think about why I seem to be obsessing on this!!!  (Fortunately my husband finds it all quite humerous.Image IPB)

I always go to redcliffe first, dont really know why, so I have always only got the blunt "bastard to a king" version.

Have to try to do it in another order some day in the future.

For the moment I have abandoned Dragonage and are playing MASS EFFECT.

In Alistair's personal quest, after he talks to Goldanna, you can say something like everyone is out for themselves and you should learn that. Unless you renege on that statement when you talk to him later in camp, his personality is hardened, meaning that he is more willing to fight for what he wants and more easily convinced to become king. It makes him willing to fight for you as his mistress if you are a female, but not a human noble, as well. You can do this to Leliana as well in her personal quest, although I'm not sure what affect it has since I've only read about it.
