It is so very hard to resist playing unattached, especially as their approval points go up. I think I managed a way to force a romance with Zevran without falling back on Alistair. I have nevery fully romanced Zev, only flirted and broke up.
I thought I would try to hold off any complimentary dialogue with Alistair. That didn't work as he starts warming up to you as approval points go up. So went to Redcliffe right away and decided to kill Connor instead of rescuing him. This time I killed him myself, it was pretty terrible to say the least.
So back at camp and a major screaming from Alistair. This time, instead of saying how bad I felt, I picked every dialogue option to the contrary. Came up with -46, which left me with a -30 approval with Alistair. After that I tried gifts and used up all my dialogue up I manged to get a +6. However, I had no dialogue left and there was no way to get Alistair to respond with some type of romantic dialogue. No way to romance him, no choice to but to romance Zev.
Didn't like that and replayed that mission. What can I say? I'm an Alistair girl through and through.
It is possible to keep Alistair at arms length, and still have his approval go up. It is extremely hard though in the beginning but gets easier later in the game. You have to avoid any mention of his being handsome, and definately stay away from the " So if you were raise in the Chantry....." Never mention that you like him, or you did something for him, or that you think he is special. If a response mentions you being friends, it is safe to say. The response that I want to give sometimes, though it seemed innocent enough would flip him over to interested, and would have to reload. After having to go back some distance sometimes I learned to always check the approval meter after each conversation to make sure we were still friends.
I managed to save Connor without sacrificing anyone, and didn't really have any trouble getting through that, but the conversation that I had the hardest getting through was giving him his mother's amulet. I finally had to say, "Lets not make more of this than it is." Broke my heart, I suppose I could have just not given it to him, but he is just so visibly upset when telling you how he broke it, I
have to give it to him.
Poor Zev, he was a distraction for my mage. After every tough conversation with Alistair, where she had to meaner than she wanted, she would always run over an invite Zevran into her tent. (I don't think he minded much;))
