PC: So, I can spare Loghain...
Alistair: No! I quit.
Anora: Off with his head!
PC: You can always get married...
Anora: Or that.
PC: Or...Alistair can kill Loghain and be king!
Alistair: Yay! Death to Loghain!
PC: Anora?
Anora: No way am I swearing fealty to that pretender.
PC: Or I can kill Loghain and you can marry each other!
Anora: I think what my new husband's friend is trying to say is that Alistair and I will be an awesome married couple.
Alistair: Yay! Death to Loghain! And yay...? to marrying Anora.
PC: Or I can kill Loghain and Alistair can be king alone. Or with me.
Alistair: Yay! Death to Loghain.
Anora: No way am I swearing fealty to that pretender. Warden?
PC: Yeah, that's my final decision.
Alistair: So, Anora isn't going to be my wife? Well, off with her head. Maybe. Sort of? We'll deal with this later.

Oh my, that's like a record caught on a scratch. Always back to "Yay! Death to Loghain." :D

I hate the whole landsmeet as it is set up in the game. It could have been really cool but all this recycling of dialogue and making it fit for all origins with the least effort just kills it.

To make it different sometimes I pick some of Riordan's dialogue choices. Since I pick them randomly I'm not always able to salvage my pc and Alistair's relationship unless I want to replay.  With that said, I had to choose to make unhardened Alistair king. Which meant him dumping my Dalish Elf.

What is left for a girl to do but sacrifice herself  for the one she loves. Even though I liked Morrigan, I couldn't stand for her and Alistair to be together (Especially after Alistair dumping me for some future wife).

The same thing happened my second playthrough, with a mage. I knew it would end badly since I didn't harden Alistair but the whole kerfluffle with Loghain was...unexpected. She got dumped, but she had him do the ritual because she didn't want to die and was terrified of getting sent back to the Circle if Anora became queen.

In the end, it hurt him way more than it hurt her. She became his Chancellor and ran the show so he could still have some freedom. There's a line after his coronation that you can say about being sorry things ended the way they did or something, and his response is so sad. Again, I should have just let him be eaten by the Archdemon.

Ok, I know this has probably been asked before and answered many times, but I just spent a significant amount of time searching and reading and couldn't find an acceptable answer. On my current playthrough, HNF, I have not hardened Alistair yet (as I have avoided Goldanna's house like the plague), we are doing the final treaty - Orzammar, I have him at 100 adore. He hasn't asked me into his tent and we haven't had the "gossip" talk yet either. Have I found one of those infamous romance bugs, or is this normal non-hardened Alistair behavior? I also haven't done the "Lamppost" conversation either.

He won't ask you to his tent until you've done his personal quest (that is, he won't switch to Love until you've done it and he won't proposition you until he's "in love").

The "gossip" talk usually doesn't trigger for me until I've exhausted most of his other conversation topics.

Thanks a million.  I have always done his quest shortly after he gives it  and  hardened him. This time I was trying to wait until the end to do Goldanna, because I wanted to try an unhardened ending, but if I totally hated it I didn't want to have to go too far back to harden him.  I was starting to get worried that the rest of the romance wouldn't play out and we know that we can't have that.  Again, thanks, this really helps.

I had to dig to find this thread, but I have another "what if" question for the Alistair harem. It involves book spoilers.

Book spoiler avast, matey...

Say that we find out that Fiona is Alistair's mother. Say that he finds that out, after being made king, with your PC as queen. How is your PC going to react? What happens to Alistair's rule?

Spoilers!

I think my PC would be thrilled. For my main Cousland, family (and not just blood family, but the family you can create with friends...or companions!) is so incredibly important. She was pretty heartbroken with the whole Goldanna situation, because she knew how much it meant to Alistair and because she really hoped he would be able to connect with someone and have the sort of bond she had with her parents (and, after the Blight, Fergus). To discover that his mother is alive, and pretty freaking awesome, would be amazing. Hopefully they would get along.

As for the rule thing...that's an iffy one. Maybe it would be something that would have to be kept pretty secret, which I think is what Fiona would want. Since Fiona is a Grey Warden, she does have a valid reason to be around.

You know what I wonder? If Fiona is Alistair's mom, will she be angry that he's king? She encouraged Maric's distance in part so he could have a normal life. It might bum her out to know that Alistair grew up thinking his father didn't care and it was all for nothing.

My PC would be very happy that he still has a chance to get to know his mother. Family is so important for him.
But what should it change about Alistair's rule? It's not like can stop being the Kind just because his mother didn't want it for him.

Ironic that Fiona wanted him to be free from the burden of his parents and he ended up being a Grey Warden and a king. ^_^

It's the whole Orlesian elf mage thing that might not sit so well with some of the more old-school Chantry nuts/racists.

More book spoilery goodness to follow. Go read The Calling and then come back.

You really think he could stay on as king if it were known that he's half elven? I imagine they would try to keep it secret, but there's a good chance he would abdicate just out of principle. Of course, after the shock, my PC would be happy for him on a personal level. I mean, an awesome Grey Warden elf as his mother? They would have to work through the "why did you abandon him" resentment, but I think he would eventually understand. The real tough part for my HNF would be if they had a child at that point. There goes the royal line she had hoped to secure...

I think if they kept it a secret, why not? There's no hard proof to link them- DNA profiling doesn't exist, there are probably few birth records, he doesn't look elven and he's not a mage. I think, because she is a Grey Warden, if she wanted to hang around it could be justified- especially since she was cured of the Taint. That's a useful person to have when you have a tainted royal couple that want to have babies. I also don't imagine that Fiona would demand that he acknowledge her and would understand why it might not be the best thing to become public knowledge.

And I don't understand your last part- how would this effect the royal line anymore than his mother being a house maid? Besides the potential for magey-ness, he's still a Theirin where it counts and, genetically speaking, fully human.

I don't see Fereldans accepting a king of elven blood, even if technically the offspring is considered human.

I agree, but why would you tell them? I think the savvy thing would be to keep it on the DL. Like I said, who will know if you don't announce it? Just the PC and Alistair and maaaaaybe Eamon (but, if he knows, it doesn't seem to bother him).

Yes, I agree with Addai. Ferelden currently has so much prejudice and racism, and with the nobles fueling the fire (they wouldn't stand for it) about what is acceptable in their public social lives. IMO it will be a century or nine, before that idea is even thought of without racism or bigotry coloring it, by the masses.

Spoilers!

Fiona is the last one to know. Maric is surely dead, Duncan is believed to be dead. Why would Alistair believe her in the first place if she told him? And then why would he make it public?

Is it even established that human with one elven parent are considered ... second class? It would be very hard to prove anyway.

I just finished a second Alistair romance game. In the first I played a self-sacrificing human mage who decided it was for the good of Fereldan that Alistair marry Anora. She spared Loghain and threw herself on the dragon (thinking that Al would have an easier time of moving on if she wasn't around). I quite liked that ending.

In my last game I played a female Dalish (who I really didn't like, to be honest - she was a bit of a beyatch). I was doing that playthrough for the Warden Commander achievement so I knew it wouldn't end well. As I really, really hate killing Loghain, I let Alistair deal with that, thinking that I could make Anora queen let Al stay in the Wardens as he wanted. Imagine my surprise when he declared himself king and then proceeded to dump my Dalish, and despite having level 4 coercion, I couldn't make him keep her as a mistress. She was gutted. When he offered to jump on the dragon she was like "but what about being king?" and he was like "Ima still gunna do it anyway" so she was like "Ok then."

I didn't feel any emotion, to be honest. I felt no connection to my character and rushed that playthrough (I've since deleted it since as I'm not carrying it on to Awakening, plus it was a bit buggy - Al's Starfang disappeared halfway through Fort Drakon and then Shale turned up at the epilogue as a broken version of the Caridin golem. Very odd). But I was also a bit annoyed with Al for making himself king, when I'd intended otherwise. I guess I shouldn't have let him fight Loghain himself.

Anyway, that's it for Alistair. There won't be a happy Alistair romance ending for any of my characters - I guess I'm a Loghain fangirl rather than an Alistair fangirl. I am very fond of Al up until Landsmeet, but once he gets there he never fails to pee me off. Sorry Al, it's just not going to work out between us.

Regarding the Fiona thing, that's absolutely not confirmed - it could be Maric has another bastard lurking in the wings. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it turned out to be Anders. He has that look about him. (Pure speculation of course).

DG already hinted that Anders is not Maric's son.

Ah OK. Guess that's settled then. :)

I tend to think Alistair is the maid's son, really, and Fiona's son is someone else. Just my own gut feeling. I could be massively wrong.

For the Fiona as mother thing - my HNF wouldn't care less, she'd be thrilled to find out he has a mother who wanted him. She very keenly felt the plight of the elves and the dwarves, so race means little to her. Alistair is Alistair, and that's enough. The Ferelden public though would never know - there's too much prejudice. Let them continue to believe she was a serving girl.

As for Alistair, I see no reason to think he would abdicate the throne - his mother's blood was never in question as far as royalty went - all that was necessary was Maric's. I don't see Alistair as holding any particular prejudices either, he didn't care that my other girl was Dalish, just that he loved her. One the one game where I saw the option to try and rule beside him as a Dalish, his objection was that she wasn't noble, not that she was an elf. Even if you ask him if he's asking you to have his child at the break-up speech, the objection is that you're a Warden, not that you're elven.

So me? I really want it to be confirmed, because I want Alistair to have his mommy!

I don't think Alistair would abdicate because he is prejudiced, but because of integrity's sake and because if it got out and it was found out they concealed it, it would be worse than if he gave over the throne willingly. I could see both of them using their Grey Warden duty as a pretext. It might even be a relief to do so. We know from the epilogue that at some point, for some unknown reason, Alistair does leave the throne and goes back to full-time GWdom. My thought is that this could be one reason why he does that.

You know, I never got that epilogue card - hardened Alistair on the throne, "still in love", Warden went to rebuild the order.

I just don't see why the information ever has to get out, its not known now, and if it only becomes known to Alistair and PC, then neither of them are going to spill the beans. Plus, it might be that, since Alistair is already working to improve the lot of the elves in Ferelden, and given the fact that he's already a bastard on the throne, if he's so popular with the people it might not make a difference.

I've gotten that card when I've married Alistair and Anora and had Alistair in love with my warden, and chose to rebuild the grey wardens (I was curious and turned on the romance with Alistair at the archdemon, I didn't actually defect from Zevran).  I thought it was pretty sweet and very funny that he left Anora in charge after doing all his good-king stuff and went back to the Grey Wardens.

I wouldn't take those LI epilogue cards seriously, though. Besides being glitched to high-heaven, they only use the information after you kill the Archdemon, rather than any real in-game decision, and that's data that won't even be imported into the expansion.

I'm convinced that Alistair's mother is who he believes her to be, but even if she weren't, it wouldn't matter. It's not like Alistair is a mage. His mother is beside the point in terms of his rule. Everyone knows he's a bastard already.

errant_knight, you have more faith in Fereldans' view of elves than I do. At the very least it would make the succession always in question, which it is anyway.

Re. the ending slides, I have gotten two different ones that have Alistair leaving the throne at some point. One, an HNF marries him ending where he is called to Weisshaupt, the other a marry-Anora-warden-rebuilds-GWs where he leaves to join her.

Re. how it gets out:  How does anything get out, especially when you are in power and thus have enemies?  Someone knows the truth, unless you think Maric set it all up by himself.  If they're called out on it publicly, do you see Alistair denying it?  Obviously it's all a hypothetical exercise.  I am hoping it is one we get to think about more, though.  :)
