Any other reassuring line should give you a relieved Alistair and a bump.

I'm confused. I've never seen that line, even when there was a romance at that point--and there usually is, but not always.... What's the situation when it comes up as a choice? Oh, wait.... When there isn't a romance.... How much of not a romance? Pre-rose? Under 50 approval?

Oh, I didn't realize that was a romance starter. This is why I never make it through a playthrough without turning Ali's romance on... so many triggers.kbach36 wrote...

That, and because Steve Valentine's voice is possessed by a desire demon. Can. not. resist.

Your post made me laugh, errant. To get that line, you need a lot of self-restraint! Basically you need to NOT be in a romance with Alistair. At all. And you need to not take him with you to Redcliffe so he doesn't get a chance to tell you that he's heir to the throne. When Arl Eamon mentions it, then you can talk to Alistair in camp afterwards with the "So why didn't you tell me you were the heir?" conversation. You'll go through some dialogue trees and he'll end with "well, I guess it's a relief you know now. I just wanted you to like me for me, etc." Then you get the line, "I do like you and not for your blood." He'll give a stunned reply because you're showing interest in him for the first time and then the romance gets flipped on.errant_knight wrote...

When I've created a character to romance Leliana or Zevran, I have to reload a lot because I can't resist flirting with Alistair. I just tell myself my characters have very active, and very specific, imaginations.
I like that you can turn the romance on at TWO points during the conversation when you first get to Redcliffe. Personally, I would question the motives of someone who suddenly expresses interest in me the moment I reveal that I'm a prince, but I guess Alistair really will take what he can get.

I'm confused because I distinctly remember getting negative approval after that reply. My memory could be failing me, of course. But I seem to recall it as a time when my PC meant to say something nice and then I realized it was taken the wrong way (similar to telling Zevran "you mean to compare my life to yours?" which I said to mean "I've suffered, but nothing like you" and Zevran understands it as an insult).Gilsa wrote...

Hmm. More testing. And it really does take great restraint for me not to flirt with Alistair. The only character who's managed to completely avoid it was my city elf, who couldn't look at him and not see Vaughn, even though Alistair is much more Soris than Vaughn.

I swear, for his opening dialogue line at neutral/warm, the VO directions said "Turn the sexy on. Way, WAY on." Here I mean his line when you approach him in camp, "something you need?"klarabella wrote...

As opposed to his "something you need, my dear?" when he's in love, which sounds much more business-like.

I do know that line, but it's different than the one we're talking about. I've never chosen that one once, even on a reload. I'm physically incapable of clicking on dialogue lines that crush Alistair. Or Zevran either, for that matter. I think it's a newly discovered nervous disorder.SurelyForth wrote...
Addai67: There is a line in the regular "Why did you keep your birthright a secret?" dialogue that goes "I did like you, now I don't know who you are." (or something). It's the only choice that gives you a chance to address the whole issue of him wanting someone to like him for him, but he takes it quite badly (I think it can end the relationship, actually). I was hoping it would come of more jokey. Alas, I had reload.

I get in trouble because I express affection through smartassery, so I see some of these lines and I think "Yeah, I could say that to someone and they would understand I'm joking." So I choose it and Alistair's face crumples and, oh Maker, it's time for a do-over.
And then I do deliberately hurt his feelings sometimes, because it helps me understand his character. I'm afraid that one of these days, I'm going to start up a fresh game and he's going to suddenly remember all the hell and torment I have put him through and absolutely refuse to play along.

Dang. I wish that was an easier option to get. I can't imagine not taking Alistair to Redcliffe. That would mean doing the whole defense of the village thing without him! Nope. Can't see it happening.

Don't go with Alistair to Redcliffe at first, talk to Bann Teagan, tell him you're a Grey Warden, and he'll ask about Alistair. You can then switch Alistair back into your party and he'll have a nice, slightly longer discussion with Teagan!
Once you step foot in Redcliffe without Alistair, you can come back in with him, and he won't initiate the "royal bastard" conversation. Its just your first visit that triggers it. Alternatively, you can bring him with you the first time, let him start to talk, then ask him if its important and can it wait? You lose approval with him for that one, but he won't tell you, and then your PC will be totally surprised when you finally revive the Arl.

Oh, you can switch him back in the party easily, especially since Redcliffe village allows you to change party members at will. I will sometimes do this now, if for RP reasons I want my character to not find out about his identity until after they get the ashes. My mage PC (current avatar) was falling for him, slept with him, but didn't know he was the heir until Eamon sprung it on her. It made the RP story of her breaking up with him more plausible. I doubt she ever would have gotten involved with him had she known it earlier.errant_knight wrote...

I play it off a lot now as my PC wanting to scout the territory first, since Grey Wardens are being hunted, and Alistair is known in this village. It makes sense not to take him until you know its safe for him to be there, right? And then they get whalloped over the head later with the revelation that he's the prince!

It really does make for a dramatic scene in Redcliffe after Eamon wakes up. My poor mage, what a huge WTF moment. She had no illusions that an elven mage could have a future with the heir. He is very classy about it if you break up with him for this reason. I believe she even got a small approval bump. It's like he's relieved if the PC helps him to do what he knows he needs to do.

How do you do this? You can't go back to camp, so what's the mechanism for switching party members?
Sidenote: I'm not sure I'm going to want to use this anyway, although it's very interesting that you can, because it makes Alistair into a guy who let's something like that get sprung on you when he makes sure to stop and tell you to prevent that from happening.

I'd see it more like he just got too afraid to tell you once he'd missed his chance. He tells you "I tried to tell you outside of Redcliffe..." and if you want to do this, you can always take the option of telling him it can wait, and then its your fault he didn't tell you, and not his.

But like I said, you can always do a party change as soon as you get outside the Chantry.
