How do you do this? You can't go back to camp, so what's the mechanism for switching party members?

Sidenote: I'm not sure I'm going to want to use this anyway, although it's very interesting that you can, because it makes Alistair into a guy who let's something like that get sprung on you when he makes sure to stop and tell you to prevent that from happening.

I'm not sure how it works on console, but on PC there is a little icon at the top that shows... um, little people.  If it's highlighted, you can change your party without going to camp.  You can do this in Orzammar and Lothering, too.

Yes, for my mage character, it was very disappointing to her that he hadn't told her earlier.  It's not OOC, however.  It actually makes his guilt over "I would have told you sooner" more plausible.  If you go to Redcliffe right after Lothering, for instance, not a lot of time has passed and there hasn't been a lot of water under the bridge between your PC and him.  You could easily interpret it that the closer your PC is to Alistair, the more he fears you finding out the truth.

On the console, you open up the radial menu, and its the icon at 10-11 o'clock that looks, like you said, like three people. Available for the most part as long as you are outside of a building, or not in a dungeon.

ROTFL!! All that running through Fereldan to get back to camp to change party members, or playing random encounters with entirely the wrong group, and it was completely unnecessary! Oh well, it was realistic from a roleplaying point of view. ;)

This gets to go into that "things you'd wish you'd known" category, huh?

Are you willing to answer how many playthroughs you've been through and not known that? ;-)

Heh, it's the little things, eh?  Most places, this feature is not available, at least on PC.  It's only certain spots, and Redcliffe village happens to be one of them.  Also makes Orzammar a lot easier, otherwise you would have to run through several area transitions to get back to camp.

Is it different on the console, I wonder? I know you can't change in Denerim, but you can in the Circle Tower, post-story quest. Redcliffe Village, Lothering, Orzammar as long as you're not in a shop or building, the Dalish camp, Lake Calenhad, I know those are all fair game. Maybe Haven, I cant remember if I tried it there.

Five--count 'em--five! One of them was unfinished because I didn't like it much, but....
I'm not actually displeased, though. It makes it more real if the party you arrived with is the party you have to play unless you are willing to run all the way back to camp. And the times when Alistair and I had big fights by ourselves, on the way to get some elfroot or something, were very exciting.

In my mind, the four character party thing is just game mechanics. Where I to write it out, for the most part everyone traveled together except during parts where it was specifically only a few who went - the last battle, especially. So it never felt too bad to be switching parties out on the fly.

But I usually did end up going to camp to do it - its funny to think of what the poor guys who never leave (aka Morrigan) do while we're all out adventuring!

Oh right, Dalish camp too. I always figure my other party members are milling around somewhere close, so whomever I send away tells the other person "the Warden wants you front and center." And naturally, they hop to. :)

This is how I do it. It's no big deal to me to be like "Sten, your attitude is wearing me down. Go back to camp and take a nap. Tell Zevran he's in and just come back at nightfall. Oh, and be mindful of zombies."

And I know what my second string are up to back at camp- talking smack about my PC and reading romance novels. Bodahn has a big stack of them in his cart. All of my Origins companions are quite familiar with things like Antivan milk sandwiches.

Personally, I would question the motives of someone who suddenly expresses interest in me the moment I reveal that I'm a prince, but I guess Alistair really will take what he can get.

Yeah, imo, this is probably one of the worst romance starters I've seen for Alistair because it starts off so awkward and it's activated right on the heels of finding out he's royalty. That line came up on my no-romance playthrough and I selected it, thinking that it was the nicest friend-like thing to say. His reaction was: "Oh, I ... oh. You see, I didn't know that." And then he closes with "I guess it's kind of a relief that you know now. Let's go." I didn't realize the romance had been turned on until I reclicked on him and immediately got the rose conversation. (More awkwardness.)

Addai67 wrote...

I'm confused because I distinctly
remember getting negative approval after that reply.  My memory could be
failing me, of course.  But I seem to recall it as a time when my PC
meant to say something nice and then I realized it was taken the wrong
way (similar to telling Zevran "you mean to compare my life to yours?"
which I said to mean "I've suffered, but nothing like you" and Zevran
understands it as an insult).

Hmm.  More testing.  And it really
does take great restraint for me not to flirt with Alistair.  The only
character who's managed to completely avoid it was my city elf, who
couldn't look at him and not see Vaughn, even though Alistair is much
more Soris than Vaughn.

I loaded my no-romance character to have that conversation with Alistair. If I pick all the nice answers and end with "I do like you, but not for your blood line," I get +1 or +2. If I just pick lines that have an upset tone to them and end with the blood line, there's no change in approval. If I tell him he's a whiner and oh, I like him, -3 plus romance is turned on, lol.  On my character where I romanced Alistair and got the rose, I didn't get the blood line at all. Wondering if you can still get it while in a romance, but without Alistair telling you that he's a royal bastard.

And one last thing I noticed since I was reloading both characters to check was that when he'd ask me to see Goldanna, the romanced character had the more jealous lines "so who is she to you?" while the friend options were more casual. It was just amusing. =p

SurelyForth wrote...

I get in trouble because I express
affection through smartassery, so I see some of these lines and I think
"Yeah, I could say that to someone and they would understand I'm
joking." So I choose it and Alistair's face crumples and, oh Maker, it's
time for a do-over.

I'm the same way. I don't understand why characters can joke around with me, but it doesn't translate the same way in return. I think my most stunning moment was that I thought I was making a light joke with Zevran about elves and he basically called me a racist. I was irritated enough with his reaction that I let the insult stand even though that wasn't my intention. In a relationship, everyone says dumb things and we still like them for it, right? =p

Heh, I found the characters in Awakening to be even more touchy. You can actually tease Alistair, but not the new companions.

It sounds like the response to saying that 'you like him, but not for his blood' is the same response you get when he asks you if you have anywhere you consider home and you pick 'with the grey wardens--with him.'

I have to admit, the "Grey Wardens, with you" option is my favorite way to start a romance with Alistair - its so sweet, especially with my Dalish girl who had to leave her whole clan behind, and my HNF who felt like she abandoned her family.  Rather than be an obvious romance starter, it feels like a way to friends first which leads to romance.

I don't know which things I say are romance starters, but I always say that. It feels true. The Couslands are all dead as far as the PC knows. Her place with the grey wardens, with Alistair, is all she has left. I figure she and Alistair are both feeling pretty lost and alone until that point, then they both know they can count on each other to stick around.

I drag his dialogue out quite a bit so I get that conversation way too late to use it as a romance starter, but it's one of my favorites, too. It really is one of the nicest things you can tell him.

I go the easy route and click on the "Has anyone told you how handsome you are?" and pretend that the conversation is something more character appropriate. I figure that my PC's are all different, so none of them would approach him in quite the same way.

LOL  I didn't realize that was a romance starter, either.  No wonder I thought the rose was something he gave every female PC!

I mean, it is a rather personal thing to say, but it also seems apt to the situation a lot of my PCs are in.  I definitely felt it on my Dalish elf, though, too!

I drag the dialogue out as long as I can as well. It would be nice if some of them would remain to use later; however, most of them disappear after romance has started.  I have also tried dropping approval points to see his reaction.  Best way to do that was either keep asking him to go to bed with me or try kissing Alistair in front of Zev when they are both at care/adore level.

Problem with Alistair. He either falls too fast or he totally drops you. At least Zev will give you some choices without completely dropping you.

I love how the game gives so many different ways to start the romance, so much fun.:P I tried a new one on my latest playthrough, the conversation where the PC asks Alistair about the effects of the Joining and he says Duncan pretty much just tells him, "You'll see." (Love the voice he uses for Duncan in that line, the only time in the game that I know of where he refers to Duncan in a teasing manner.) Anyway, one of the responses is "Just try that line on me." and he says something to the effect of "Trust me, I have much better lines for you." You then have the chance to encourage him, though unfortunately he doesn't give you any 'lines' right then. I'm sure some Alistair pickup-lines at that point would have been soooo funny, but it was still pretty cute.

Oh! I also tried waiting to find out about Alistair's birthright until after the Sacred Ashes quest, and the result was just priceless.  Lol! Poor Alistair.

*****MASS EFFECT 2 SPOILERS AHEAD*****

I actually played Mass Effect 2 before I got Dragon Age. (Heh, I got Dragon Age to try and distract me from ME2.:P) I noticed that quite a few people prefered Kaidan to Alistair before ME2 came out, and I was just wondering if you still feel the same way. I personally was already quite unhappy with Kaidan once I started Dragon Age... my Shep found Kaidan's behavior on Horizon to be quite unforgivable. Since it seemed that Kaidan had dumped her, she was then able to move on and snuggle up to the oh-so-smexy Garrus... he had always been there for her, after all.<3

I thought you get the rose regardless if you're a female PC from Alistair, or did I read that wrong?

As far as I know, you only get it if he is at either care or adore. I think it's care

I don't remember what thread we were talking about this, but since this is an Alistair thread I'll drop it in here anyway.

A while back some of us were chatting about the "softer Goldanna" you sometimes get.  We couldn't figure out what triggered it, but I believe finally came around to deciding that softer Goldanna appears when your PC is male.  I re-started my Aedan character and indeed, when he went with Alistair to see the little harpy, I got the softer Goldanna responses.  Screenshot below, you can't see it too well but her expression is softer than the usual scowl.

So make of that what you will... Goldanna will be a royal b*tch from start to finish if your PC is female, but with a male PC, she actually turns halfway human.

I did this with my current playthrough.  Had him up to 100% adore before I went to Redcliff, already invited him to my tent.  Had the whole romance thing going on before my PC found out that he was the heir to the Throne, so that made the whole exchange just priceless.

PC: What about Alistair?  What do you mean?

Bann Teagan: You don't know?

Alistair: I, ah... meant to tell you when we were approaching Redcliff, but...

PC: What?! Why didn't you tell me this earlier, Alistair?

I loved it but more dialogue could of been added for the PC lol.  Just to let Alistair know just how upset she was.  Ya having that why did you keep your birthright a secret conversation seemed to fit this scene better then if you take him to Redcliff the first time and he tells you about being Maric's son.

That's right, I always wondered why in some of my games from earlier she wasn't as much of a b***h. I kept on trying to get those different dialogue scenes that I knew existed but couldn't for the life of me remember how I triggered them lol.   My first playthroughs I played a male.  Dang she's really got issues lmao.

Maybe she thought your male PC was a potential john, or he's her crack dealer's delivery boy.
