If you take away the raging racist ass that Kai Leng is, I can see the resemblance.

Kai is ex-N7 and Adam's ex-SWAT.

Both got kicked out because they killed someone and both got cybernetic operations to save/improve their lives.

I wonder how the dynamic between Kai Leng and Shepard will be. I imagine that Kai Leng is eager to prove that he is stronger and better than Shepard.

Shepard is not the deity the game makes him out to be. He/she died once, and can die again. Realistically, he/she should not be the key to winning/losing the war either (the game will make it that way, but let's be realistic here).

Two, post-war implications. People aren't just going to fight for galactic survival, they are going to fight for what they want after the war is won too. You'll see soon enough, it's why everyone won't drop everything and fight. For TIM, Leng, and Cerberus, Shepard poses a very legitimate threat to their plans.

Where I am getting hung up on this comparison is their backgrounds. We don't have much information on Leng's background, we do have good information on Jensen's. And coming from a story perspective, Jensen is a protagonist, some would say an dark protagonist but I digress. Whereas Leng is obviously a antagonist. Again, grounds for comparison lessened. 

Would gladly hear more opinions on how this comparison can be made.

Well, Adam is a pretty open character since his dialogues are often chosen by the player, while Kai Leng is strictly tied to one side, so it's a little wobbly.

And as you said, we don't know much about the guy. Only that he's ex-N7, is a very skilled assassin and has an Asian background.

Not much to go on. Probably because the writer didn't think that it was needed so much and that him being loyal to Cerberus is enough.

That's just my thought, though.

I don't see that. I see Leng just wanting to "finish the job." Leng appears to be very focused. To take Shepard out would be a job, one that he would enjoy but, I have not seen the dialogue of the leaked script thus would glad to be wrong. 

Can't really argue against that. I would just find it interesting if he despite never have met him, sees him as a sort of nemesis already.

Thus you are making a comparison based solely on one attribute. If you took that logic to another step then you can make a similar argument for Shepard and TIM. Not very valid, and it does not take into consideration the full impact of either character. Deja vu.

True enough; it's nothing more than a quick thought. Which is why I'm very curious to see how Kai Leng is portrayed in ME3. I'm only hoping he isn't too different from his portrayal in Retribution.

EDIT: For those who read the spoilers, does Kai have a huge part to play or a few small bits?
