Other than the highly anticipated Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, the major games of the year have arrived at the hands of crazed gamers everywhere. In this topic, simply provide your top choices for the year, and perhaps a few blurbs on why it's worth giving a try.

#5: Dark Souls

Pros:
+Improved RPG Elements, Bonfire, and other gameplay additions.
+Enhanced Graphical Power, which really shines in the boss battles.
+Addictive nature due to the difficulty.

Cons:
-You will throw your controller out the window.
-You will scream several times at a TV screen.
-Some of the animations can be a bit clunky.

#4: Uncharted 3

Pros:
+Phenomenal use of animation through fluidity, realism, and astonishing set pieces.
+Greatly improved narrative, with a less ho-hum antagonist, and a stronger emphasis on character relationships.
+More Sully.

Cons:
-Some of the plot points either seem lacking or otherwise unfinished.
-A few issues with AI involving 3 or more characters.

#3: L.A. Noire

Pros:
+Downright incredible facial expressions, the best at that point in time.
+Intense Interrogation Game mechanics.
+A well fleshed-out, realistic portrayal of Mid 20th Century L.A.

Cons:
-A severe lack of replay value besides strolling for landmarks.
-After the first playthrough of a case, it needed some form of cross-out-the-wrong-answer mechanic if you picked the wrong one before. Otherwise, trying to get the right answers can get tedious.

#2: Batman, Arkham City

Pros:
+An enormous city for batman to freely explore, greatly expanded replay value
+A much improved storyline.
+Improved Combat and Maneuvering.
+Side Quests that feel about the same quality as the main game itself.

Cons:
-Some Iffy puzzles.

#1: Barbie Princess Adventures Skyrim

Pros:
+An Incredibly gorgeous, jaw-dropping world - especially for PC users.
+Immersive world that's even easier to get lost/sucked into.
+Tree System for each skill greatly enhances customization.
+Dragons.
+Wider range of voice actors, not as repetitive.
+Less obtrusive HUD.
+About 50 other things.

Cons:
-Writing doesn't quite have the emotional potency you'll find with BioWare, Obsidian, Quantic Dream, etc.
-It Ends...eventually.

Skyrim is the only one i can count because DA:2 was a bit meh (not terrible just nothing amazing) and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is a remake so i dont really want to count it (but skyrims still better than it anyway imo)

EDIT: wow ive only played three games that came out this year:?

I know it's technically a 2010 game, but New Vegas was absolutely the best thing I personally played all year...there were so many funny, moving, and downright disturbing stories all over the Mojave!

lol @ Bar.........err Skyrim.
My top Five but in no praticular order.

Skyrim

Pro's

Much improved in the looks department, people, weapons, well everything.

The New Perks and Skilll Tree is really nice

Hud and VA improvements.

Minor things with the AI are majorly improved as is Thrid Person, I find my self constantly switching to third and first actully.

Cons.

RAdiant AI is largely over blown.

Some new Features and issues with the AI still exsist. Praticular with Marrige it feels so lifeless.

And there are bugs in some quests, such as me being unable to enter one dungeon as my game will freeze every time, also you have to be careful not to pick up any quest related books else when you get the quest it breaks them.

DA 2

Pro's

Some of the Companions were much more improved upon.

Skill tree is better worked out now.

The story I find much better, least not as boring as Origins, however...

Cons,

The Story could be alot better, or at least not spread out in the manner it was.
Level design while not horrible is lack luster and the locales are very limited.
Some companions are just "Ugh".
While better than DA:O imo, Skyrim Crushes both brutally.

Rage

Pro's innovative story and direction in terms of enemy AI.
Some customization.
Has an open world feel where some NPCs seems to actully care about you the player, and acknoladge what you've done, NPC locations also for the most move around.
Enviroments and people look rather nice.

Con's
At times Mesh issues happen, though I haven't ran into that.
Long Load times.
Winning Races depends heavily on upgrades.
Story is rather short though longer than most modern Shooters, ends in a cliff hanger, giving me hope for RAge 2.

SRTT

Pros, Improved looks.
Improved car and flight handeling.
Massive customization in most areas
Funny NPCS
Action packed and hard to forget missions.

Cons.

The Story while fun, is short and not gripping minus the final missions.
Some things have vanished from previous installments, though I hope thats as they arn't yet in "Touch" with the new engin, such as some former sidequest types, and clothing options.
Dogged AI, at points you have to run or go into a store you own, its impossible without the "Cheat" upgrades to survive them all.
Now replay functions on past missions like previous games.

WarHammer 40k Space Marines

Pros a Good WH0k shooter.
Story is good as far as WH games go.
Health system and encourage use of Melee is new from the shooter market.
FOR THE GOD EMPORER! (All the qoutes you can learn from this game are useful in day to day life >>)

Cons

AI, it often minus Rocket Launching Orcs, charges you, You can barely gain a breather in some levels.
Multiplayer is heavily unbalanced.
Poor VA's, the VA's are okay, but not top notch, and geographically limited.
Friendly AI is next to useless minus as meat shields.

I would Also place, Fallout NV, Halo CE AE, and MGS Collection here, but all of these are older than 2011, or re releases.

Radiant AI is largely over blown.

Agreed. I haven't seen any impressive events utilizing that, thus far.

with Marrige it feels so lifeless.

There are ways to spice it up, you know. The Dark Brotherhood eventually allows you to upgade a torture chamber. Just saying...

Having just finished it yesterday I think my favorite game for this year is Assassins Creed Revelations.

Pros:
+ The story was brilliant. It kept me interested the whole time and had me sucked in emotionally too. Some very funny moments and some very sad moments. All in all very well written.
+ While a lot of the gameplay mechanics have stayed the same there are some new additions to the combat and general travel around the city to make it more interesting.
+ The multiplayer has some new game modes and some new skills. You can also customise your skills a bit once you reach a certain rank.

Cons:
- Maneuverability can be a bit of an issue sometimes (Ezio not doing what he's told) but that may be more an issue on my part.

Honourable mention for Alice Madness Returns.

Pros:
+ This game is flat out beautiful to look at. It has a very surreal look to it and can be quite dark at times. The detail in Alice's outfits alone are amazing.
+ It's been a long time since I've played a platforming style of game. It was quite well done here.
+ It's a dark and interesting take on the Alice in wonderland story.

Cons:
- The dodge mechanic during combat can be a bit iffy at times, usually if you use it while you have locked onto an enemy.

2. Deus Ex: Human revolution
3. Portal 2
4. Rage
5. Dragon age 2
6. L.A Noire
7. Dark souls
8. Batman arkham city (haven't got it but I've played it and it was awsome)
9. Fallout: New Vegas dlc. The game came out last year (if it was for the full game it wil be second on my list) but how good the dlc was that came out for it this year means they deserve a mention.

They're the only games that really come to mind of games I've played that have came out this year.

I'm sure I will be adding the Witcher 2 to this list, but I've got to wait until next year to get my new PC (current one cant handle it) as I still need to finish Xmas shopping.

Lots of other enjoyable stuff out this year but those topped my list. Not a bad year at all for gaming. New Vegas I played enough in 2011 to count at least as high as anything else in my list, but technically its a 2010.

1) Skyrim - Not only is it my top game of the year so far, it's jumped into my all time top 5 RPGs ever. The world they created is remarkable and you feel like you're part of it, and not just being railroaded through a story. I wish the companions had a little more depth to them, but it's just a great game. Haven't been this high on a game since DA:O.

2) Arkham City - Actions games have never been a genre I'm big on, so that should tell you just how good this game was to me. Excellently written, even down to the side quests, which are written at a main story quality. Large open city, great combat, good voice acting, and who doesn't like a little playable Catwoman thrown in lol

3) Witcher 2 - another lovely and brilliant world created. Choices that matter, two completely different story paths in the second act.

I also played Dragon Age 2 & Dungeon Siege III which were complete letdowns, if we do the reverse of this list I'll go into more detail.

Edit: I forgot about Shogun 2 - Total War, which I neither found great nor bad, was just a solid game.

You win just for listing P2 in your favorite list. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who thought Portal 2 was that good!

1. Portal 2
2. Skyrim

I'm sure I'll like Skyrim more than Portal 2 once it's polished and probably modded though.

Seriously been a pretty crap year with overblown games like Skyrim and Deus Ex. Good games, but not even close to a game of the year type of thing. I guess I was looking for something close to New Vegas.

Anyways, I would say it has to go hands down to Dark Souls: improved setting, gorgeous graphics, fluid gameplay, and awesome co-op multiplayer. Dark Souls is the only game that actually lived up to the hype. Although I have my issues with its lack of storyline, I still think the gameplay is better than any ARPG on the market today.

I think/hope next year will be my favorite with unique (as in not made by Bethesda, BioWare, or Obsidian) RPGs like Kingdoms of Amalur and Dragons Dogma.

I've not played many games this year (sue me I'm picky). But of the ones I've played through and can give a reasonable review on:

Assassins Creed Revelations

PROS:
+ A great sendoff to both Ezio Auditore and Altair
+ The Ottoman setting
+ Some fantastic action setpieces

CONS:
- Engine feels a little outdated despite some additions
- Some annoying bugs

Batman Arkham City

PROS:
+ Gameplay improvements across the board
+ Well designed open world
+ Sidequests that are interesting and fun
+ Great moments within main story

CONS:
- Somewhat dissapointing resolutions within main story as well

Other honorable mentions that weren't quite Game of the Year material:

LA Noire - A dissapointing followup to Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption. Despite the fantastic graphics and authentic noir atmosphere, it's paired with an open world that's not worth exploring and repetitive gameplay elements that lessen the replay value.

Dragon Age II - A letdown from Origins. The characters are great and the new gameplay elements aren't bad. But it's main story is derailed by a bad ending and feels more like a setup for Dragon Age 3.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who thought Portal 2 was that good!

It was one of the more major games of the year, but a lot of the sequel's concept are a bit of a turn off. The gameplay is unquestionably an improvement.

Clunky animations for Dark Souls, but not Skyrim OP?

U ma....nevermind.

Although I have my issues with (Dark Souls') lack of storyline, I still think the gameplay is better than any ARPG on the market today.

I think that comes with the nature of the franchise - it improved over the Demon's Souls story, but it's always been a highly gameplay-driven game.

I might have laughed after seeing this. Loudly.

My only problems with the game are the lack of consequences and an ending. I also thought the main quest was rather bland. But as a whole?
