1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
2. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
3. Portal 2

I'm sure that list would be different if I had a decent PC (Total War: Shogun 2 + Witcher 2)

1. Batman: Arkham City - Its hard to express into words how much I love this game. They did everything right. Everything they did in the first game has been improved. If I have one complaint its so SHORT :(.

2. Skyrim: What can I say that hasn't been said already? I've enjoyed TES games since Morrowind but this one makes me feel like I'm really part of a journey. So many hours already poured into this and I haven't even come close to discovering everything this game has to offer. I mean just LAST NIGHT I found the Dark Brotherhood :D.

3. Mortal Kombat - A fighting game that kept me hooked for months is rare. I usually get bored of fighting games pretty quickly so to have one be almost the only reason I turn on my PS3 for weeks is something special.

4. L.A. Noire - This isn't GTA so why so many people expected to to be is beyond me. Very good use of face rendering. I love how every one in the game is a real actors face. Very compelling cases good mix of dective work with the ocassional chace or shoot out. This is the Batman game if you played Bruce Wayne the entire game lol.

5. Assassin's Creed: Revelations - I expected the same game as always and it is but the improvements make it feel new. Ubisoft has perfected this down to why this series works for so many people. Jumping along rooftops and assassinating. If the formula works.

Honorable mentions
LittleBigPlanet 2 - If fun was brought down the purest formula and put in a bottle this is what it would taste like
Portal 2 - Great sequel with the humor as always but without that humor it would be a pretty bland puzzler
Dues Ex Human Revolution - Adam Jensen didn't ask for this but we sure did.

5. Mortal Kombat

Pros:

-YES, FINALLY, The 2D MK i came to Love is BACK!
-Large and varied Roster
-The Story mode is long(enough), and it's full of easter eggs, plenty that will make you go "This is Awesome", if you're a long time MK fan like me, that is....

Cons:

-...Though it also has plenty "This is Embarrassing/Cheesy" Moments, lots of 'em actually.
-The Online is Absolute ****ing trash.
-Y CANT PLAY AS GORO!?!?!!? D:<

4. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception

Pros:
-Every single thing that was good about U2 is here.

Cons:
-Except the shock and awe that 2 had, because you're playing a VERY continuistic sequel.

3. Batman Arkham City

Pros:
- Um.... Buddy, is goddamn Batman, that should be enough, but i'll say more anyway.
- I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE the Combat
- Mark Hamill's Last act as Joker(:crying:) Was Absolutely Amazing
- Beautiful Looking
- Fan Service Everywhere = Win

Cons:

- Some Villains deserved more screen time
- Some Puzzles are rather annoying

2. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

Pros:
- Beautiful Graphics
- Engaging Story and Characters
- Awesome Combat
- The VA has been VASTLY improved
- The Decicions have mattered more than in any other game before(that i remember anyway)
- Cleverly Streamlined, which i don't mind (Streamlined is NOT the same as Dumbed down)

Cons:

- If you don't care about multiple Decisions, the game is rather Short in comparison to Other RPGs
- Relatively low Rewards for exploration, giving a sense of slightly waste potential

1. The Elder Scrolls V: SKYRIM

Pros:

- The Story is ALMOST as good as Morrowind(imo, obviously)
- The Combat is BY FAR the best it has been in the Series
- Great Graphics(though i will admit that i expected a bit more)
- 150 handcrafted Dungeons? YES PLEASE
- i've already put 80 hours in a single Character and my Quest log is STILL full, and i KNOW there are more quest waiting for me. So yes, it has Some GOOD bang for the Buck.
- If ANYBODY knows how to Streamline S**t, It's Bethesda, It Captures Morrowind's Spirit, but makes it more accessible, so that people who don't have the patience for something as Menu and Micro management Intensive can have fun. It's Deep, but ONLY if you want it to, instead of forcing it's deepness unto you.
- Lots of Other Things

Cons:

-UI. Nuff Said
- Nothing Else
- The Story Ends D:

Runner Ups:

Battlefield 3: The Multiplayer ALONE would have put it in, at least, number 5, but the Campaign is Balls and so is the Co-Op.

Deus Ex Human Revolution
: The Bosses, some repetitive situations and LOTS of Frustating Situations kept it away from the List, HOWEVER, i will replay it once i FINALLY get my Holiday this week, that way i'll actually have the time needed to fully invest myself in it and it's spionage gameplay, which i'm sure will make the list change.

RAGE: Despite the MANY bugs, a laughable story and the fact that i objectively, see it as little more than an Average game, i still had a lot of fun with it, but just that, JUST fun, nothing more.

Portal 2: i feel that i should have included it in the list, because it almost seems as if it was forgotten, but i have to be truthful to myself, but i still love this game despite not making to the list.

Saints Row The Third: i haven't gone very far with it, but i'm having LOADS of fun, so when i finish, maybe it will make to the list.

Possible inclusions in the future(once i play them): Dark Souls, Sonic Generations(a GOOD sonic Game? THIS I HAVE TO SEE), Minecraft(just started an hour ago actually, let's see how it holds up).

Skyrim. I'm not an Elder Scrolls fan and was dragged into this kicking and screaming. Put simply - I love it. Immersive, huge, interesting, funny, sad and with a horse that likes to tank dragons (love ya Shadowmere). It kills everything I've played this year, bugs and all.

I have Arkham City waiting at home for me to finish with Skyrim but everything I've heard makes me think if I had played it, it would be on this very short list ;-)

So I made a point to give up MMOs forever (too time consuming at this point in my life) and ended up buying way too many single-player games for PS3 and PC instead this year. Due to MMO's I missed out on a ton of games in the past 5 or so years so played a varied amount. My top games, from most favored to least, are:

1. Dragon Age 2 - did play DA:O

Pros:

* Engrossing story and characters. Loved Bethany, Isabela, Fenris and Anders. Aveline and Varric even grew on me over time. I felt there were moments of both humor and tragedy that were well done. I haven't played a game that spanned so many years in one story before so I found that to be new and different. I liked Hawke's storyline since it didn't feel very cliche as being a generic "chosen one" or something special like Skyrim.
* Interesting Romance options.
* Choices that encouraged me to replay the game after finishing it to see the story from another angle. I haven't replayed a single-player RPG in years.
* Nice musical score overall.
* Still some of the best voice acting I've encountered in games.
* Personally enjoyed some of the streamlining and quickened battle pace.

Cons:
* Average to unimpressive graphics outside of the main characters.
* Some ugly armors and too many DLC or other unlockables that would flesh out the available armors.
* New elven models were hideous.
* Butchered the apperance of some DA:O characters.
* Repeated dungeons felt boring after a while.

2. Skyrim - First time playing a TES game. Ranked highly based on enjoying it for about 25 hours which is more than most games for me.

Pros

* Interesting enough world. Some pretty sights. I liked the animals and how they react to you - I never hunt any of them.
* Towns and villages are interesting and atmospheric, though the atmosphere starts to feel repetative the more places you visit outside of a few notable exceptions.
* Dragon Shouts are an interesting ability - though the hero in the Breath of Fire series ability to transform into a dragon entirely was in the back of my mind and overshadowed this dragon angle.
* Nice graphics overall.
* It's fun to plan out a character and pick what perks you will pick. I also liked that I was not tied to a class can could play a Plate Warrior who casts spells and knows how to pick locks, rather than having a classes that rarely offer this combination of gameplay.
* Companions questlines felt interesting, if not the main storylines.

Cons

* Started to have a "single player MMO" feeling with the quest design and some of the grinding of skills/crafting. MMOish games are exactly what I'm trying to get rid of.
* I'm at 30 hours and it is starting to get boring. Every quest just sends you to a dungeon to kill something or pick up something and then return to the quest giver.
* Bugs galore, and crashes too. Had to google how to use console commands to fix some quest bugs which ripped me right out of any immersion.
* Both main storylines feel generic and not interesting.
* NPCs are not memorable.
* Followers are for the most part not memorable.
* Marriage is not memorable, though your spouse is modestly endearing when you speak to them in your home.
* Clunky animations and sometimes bizarre AI.
* Clunky interface.

3. Witcher 2 - Only got to the middle of the first act; you-tubed some later scenes as I wasn't enjoying actually playing it that much after a while.

Pros:
* Graphical eye-candy.
* Some very great tracks on the soundtrack. Some of them I listen to while relaxing (like the first town theme). Sorceress theme song is rather memorable as well.
* Enjoyed the more "mature" themes, and dark/gritty world.
* Some poignant moments, such as the King & his children in the opening.
* Not everything gets neatly wrapped up; there appears to be true pros and cons for a lot of the decision arcs.

Cons:

* Main character is hard to relate to. He is bland and ugly. Always speaks mostly monotone.
* Main character doesn't seem to really have friends; just Triss and a bunch of business associates he doesn't seem to really care much about. If he doesn't care to develop any meaningful relationships with them, I don't really either.
* Story can be confusing if you try to appreciate it on a deeper level - I didn't read the books or play the other game, so I had no idea what nations were supposed to be good or bad.
* Very tedious controls. I really hated waiting for my Amulet to recharge so I can find the small bags enemies drop and then get lost in the grass. Overly tedious to position my character to pick up said bags. Counter-intuitive controls and sometimes difficult to roll, cast spells, swing sword, and move around all in the same fight so I end up just picking to do a couple of those things (tank and spank and the occaisonal spell).
* Some of the "mature" content came across as overly immature. An NPC asking if someone farted is not mature or funny, it's annoying. Especially when it's repeated over and over again.
* Sorry, but sex scenes. I was so embarassed if anyone walked into the room to Triss' boobs and dramatic moaning. It felt like I was watching gross video game porn, which is more embarassing than if I was watching actual porn.
* Ioveth's voice seemed mis-matched to his character. Just sounded too harsh/grating.
* The song the bard sings in a quest is really terrible. After listening to Leliana's soundtrack and even the bards in Skyrim, just awful.
* Some boring side-quests (monster contracts). Never figured out how to do things like blow up a creature den.
* Tedious boss fight (Kayran) that I had to google what was supposed to be going on during each leg of hte fight as it wasn't immediately sensible. In fact a few times I died before the Sorceress could even finish talking about what was going on.

Other Games I Played This Year for the First Time - Including some games not released this year:

Heavy Rain - I know this came out last year but actually my second favorite games this year. I guess the special edition came out this year so if someone hasn't played this yet I'd check it out since it's cheap. I hope this developer comes out with more games.
Mortal Kombat 9 - Fun for a week or two, but I'll never invest enough time to be able to be competitive online so lost its charm for now. Will be fun to play now and again inbetween more engrossing titles.
Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition - Another week or two of interest.
Marvel v. Capcom 3 - Yet another week or two of fun. Annoyed they released another version a few months later...
Mortal Kombat Arkade Collection - (Despite nostalgia, this sure didn't age well!)
Silent Hill 1 - (Loved the movie - game was tedious)
Silent Hill Homecoming - nicer graphics and I liked the theme song in the intro credits
Resident Evil 5 Gold - 2009/2010: Was fun to play once, but won't pick it up again.
Assassin's Creed 1 - so boring after an hour.
Assassin's Creed 2 - was more interesting but no desire to play it again.
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood - was okay, but playing all 3 this year made me completely lose interest in the franchise and did not buy Revelations.
Clash of the Titans PS3 - Not sure when this came out, but it was god-awful. I sold it back to BestBuy after playing it for 30 minutes for $3 dollars. I do not want this in my home.

^^ Literally the only new games I've bought this year (oh, and also Rise of Nightmares, but that was atrocious.) I'm really picky about my games, so I usually only buy one if I'm pretty damn sure I'm gonna like it.

1. Deux Ex: Human Revolution
+ Interesting story
+ Hacking minigame is about the only one ever that I've enjoyed
+ Can take several different approaches to most enemy encounters
- Character models lack polish - functional but not that great to look at
- Canned animations during conversation are too obvious
- Hard to play as a cover shooter due to lean-out controls, weak health and lack of ammunition - favours stealth/hacking character more

2. Skyrim
+ Combat is a big improvement from Oblivion, especially for melee
+ Some beautiful vistas, and most of the hold capitals are well designed and interesting to explore when you first get there
+ Great soundtrack
- Voice acting gets samey very fast
- Followers are a liability in enclosed spaces (run in front of your attacks, block doorways, set off traps when trying to attack, etc)
- Horses aren't that useful (saddlebags for storage would be nice)

3.L.A. Noire
+ Great characters, voice acting and conversation scenes
+ Investigating crime scenes and analyzing clues is quite fun when you start figuring out what's happened as a result
+ Captures noir atmosphere well
- Brawls and shootouts aren't much fun
- Free roam activities and mini-missions get old
- Some of the evidence that could prove a suspect was lying wasn't very intuitive

4. Dragon Age II
+ Interesting and frequently entertaining characters. Character design for the companions was great, particularly Isabella, Merril and Varric
+ Friendship/Rivalry was a nice touch, as opposed to only developing a relationship with any character if they liked you
- HUD was very uninspired
- Combat system too reliant on spawning enemies in around an expected party location
- Stealth enemies were just cheap and annoying (bombarding an area they vanished in with fire, thunder and arrow AOEs frequently had no effect on their invisibility), in addition to having far more health than seems reasonable for that type of enemy
- Too many junk items

Interesting Romance options.

It's true. You've got your virgin next door, your up-on-the-wall, "Let's get it on"...

+ Hacking minigame is about the only one ever that I've enjoyed

Agreed, a minigame I actually enjoy is a rarity.

Marriage is not memorable, though your spouse is modestly endearing when you speak to them in your home.

We're talking about in the game, right?

- Stealth enemies were just cheap and annoying (bombarding an area they vanished in with fire, thunder and arrow AOEs frequently had no effect on their invisibility), in addition to having far more health than seems reasonable for that type of enemy

That, along with the mages popping out of nowhere and casting the polyhedron of doom was also quite a drag.

With the exception of DA2, TW2 and AC:B (PC) I've not played any title realesed in 2011. It' just much cheaper to buy old games on Steam, GoG or equivalent services for the consolle :D

So I would say that the best game of 2011 that I've played is TW2.

If I should choose between the older games I've played in 2011, it would be a tight fight between Red Dead Redemption and Shadow of the Colossus, with the second probably being my favourite one. Btw, both games are way better than TW2.

Imho, RDR is the best Rockstar game ever and I played most of them. Basically, it's the game that made the best use of its sandbox nature while having a very good story with some great and inspiring moments.  Unfortunately RDR is not going to be ported to PC and that's the main reason I've buyed a PS3 last year.

Skyrim seemed like a promising candidate but my interest in it dropped like a stone once I'd seen most of the world. Then one sees the quests and how rather boring they are design-wise. Still, a good improvement on Oblivion at least.

My fav game of the year is Deus Ex Human Revolution. Not perfect by any means but one of the more successful attempts at pleasing the old-school fans while fitting it into a modern time-frame as well. Also one of few games that actually attempts to delve into a particular theme and explore the effects and consequences of it.

I have only played 3 games that were released this year, DA2, TW2, and Portal 2. I enjoyed them all three so... they are my top games, DA2 taking the top spot.

Just for the record (not that anyone cares), my actual favorite game that I played this year was Mass Effect 2.
