Hi.  NWN2 Platinum is on sale for $9.99 ending Nov 28th.

I bought copies at this price last year and gave them away as gifts (which are still being played :))

That's pretty cool. I'm sorely tempted. Do you know, though, how this would sit with an existing NWN2 installation? Would I have to uninstall the non-Steam version first, say?

I'm not sure.

I bought a Steam copy for me, just as a backup. When I have to reinstall NWN2, I plan to use the Steam version and forego the 9 disk installation (7 NWN2 CDs + 1 MOTB DVD + 1 SOZ DVD) and get to skip the patching.  Including MOW from a backup disk, my next installation would have utilized 10 disks.

The Steam version is installed in the Steam folder, so that will not conflict. A quick check on forums indicated that both versions (disk/Steam) install keys to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" in the Windows registry, which may conflict. I would try it out with my Steam copy, but I have NWN2 running really well right now.

OK well I might give that a go. I do fancy getting MotB and SoZ but I don't want to screw up my current installation if possible. I guess if it comes to it I could just uninstall everything and then reinstall from Steam.

Seven CDs sounds like a lot, by the way. I'm pretty sure I only have one (though I have the 3-CD version of NWN1 and the 5+1 version of BG+TotSC, which are by far cooler than their alternatives).

Ah, I see, Steam games seem to be installed within Steam, so it looks like I have two concurrent NWN2 installs right now... but with the same My Documents folder. I renamed the old one so I have a completely blank one for now, I'll try merging them later then probably remove the old NWN2 install. Seems to work OK as it is right now though.

Yeah, I read that some people suggested installing the two versions under different users, to keep the Documents folders separate. I never use the Documents folder. I always use the "-home" parameter anyway. Keeps the install real clean.

Edit:  Actually, I do use the Documents/NWN2 folder.  I start NWN2 the first time, set the options to what I like, then exit the game.  From that point on I only use the Documents/NWN2 folder to hold the two .ini files I like and copy to the new -home folders I create.  Realisitcally, I don't need the Documents folder to do this, I could just keep copies of the two .ini files somewhere else.

Yeah, I ended up getting this version rather than the bundle being sold at the Atari store.

Although I've played NWN2 - the original release without expansions - I found $9.99 a steal I could not pass up on. So, I'm fully updated now to all versions of NWN2.

EDIT: WOW! My original post from 14 days ago is still on the front page, even with all these annoying sticky posts.

Yes, and the $5 deal has generated a new round of trollerific "I played NWN2 and it made my computer explode and gave my car a flat tire" posts to the Steam forums.

Hopefully those are issues my never launcher can solve or sidestep, it already seems like it should help to some degree. Pretty close to camera issues being a lot better for example, and client extension, setting cores should help, as well as a tool to help copy paste cdkeys into the game from where steam provides it.
