Hey guys, I looked through the forum a bit and haven't been able to find anyone else with the same issue I'm having. So I bought ME1 off Steam the other day and now I just can't get it to start. ME2 works just fine, but ME1 won't.
So I start the game, but as soon as it gets to the "Bioware" splash page it just freezes and loops part of the audio.  This was on Windows Vista, and I'll post specs momentarily as I'm on a different computer as the one I'm trying to run the game on.
I've tried turning off indexing for pretty much all of my harddrive, tried deleting and reinstalling the game, and I know my drivers are all up to date. I doubt anyone is going to see this before I get computer specs posted, but if anyone knows what could possibly be the problem help is appreciated!
Thanks,

Edit:: I already looked through EA's tech support page and wasn't able to find anything relevant

Try downloading and installing the 1.02 patch for Mass Effect. Steam for some reason often does not install the patch properly so you need to download it and install manually.

Hi, I'm having the same issue it seems. I just bought ME 1 off of steam and cannot get it to work. The program freezes up or runs extremely slow at the first Bioware splash. I have tried patching the game to 1.02 and a whole lot of other things to no avail..
here are links to my system details:

Please help?!

P.S. My friend has the exact same computer that I do (same specs and everything) and he plays ME 1 fine on his comp (he says he plays it on max settings too)...

Actually, it appears that you have what is called a Netbook, not really a Notebook, and an 800 MHz CPU, no matter how many cores, cannot Turbo Mode upward to a fast enough level for the game.

Minimum System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC
(Corrected from dumb, Pie in the Sky lies to the real thing)

Operating System:
Windows XP or Vista

Processor:
2.4+GHZ Intel or 2.0+GHZ AMD

Memory:
1 Gigabyte Ram (XP)
2 Gigabyte Ram (Vista)

Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 6 series (6800GT or better: 210, 310, 520, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 7600 GS, 8200, 8300, 8400 GS, 8500, 9100, 9200, & 9300 are below minimum system requirements)
ATI Radeon X1650 XT or better (X1050, X1300, X1300 Pro, *X1550*, HD 2400, HD 3100, HD 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4250, HD 4270, HD 4350, HD 4550, and (probably) HD 5450 are below minimum system requirements) no video device with Intel's name on it is supported in any way, shape, or form.

Hard Drive Space:
12 Gigabytes

Sound Card:
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers

I have an AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60, 2000 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)

And I specifically asked for a gaming notebook when I bought this ****...so I hope you're wrong

P.S. My friend just told me his ME 1 stopped working when he tried it today (the guy who has the same exact computer as I do), could it be the windows update from a couple days ago? The update is the only thing that's happened since my friend played it last week..

Both of those links were to an 800 MHz core speed report about that CPU.  I didn't look it up elsewhere, because laptops simply aren't intended for game playing, so I pay very little attention to them, and Notebooks, even less.

You were lied to wherever you went to let yourself be lied to about that little clunker.  An 8400 m was no good when it was new five years ago, so it certainly didn't get any better since then.  Even if you screwed up both of those linked reports, you can't turn crap into gold when it comes to an 8400M.

There is my correct version... it shows that my CPU is 2000+

I also read that my video card met the system reqs before I bought the game...I really don't care if my video card is crap...just that it meets the minimum reqs...you're also missing the point that it ran fine (max settings) on my friends comp(same crap as mine)...so it shouldnt be a problem..right?

P.S. When I start the game in Windowed mode it runs smoothly until I click on the screen with my mouse to try to engage the program

You didn't get one, and relying on a salesman's advice is far too naive for a computer buyer to be.

There is no EA support for Notebooks or for Laptops, just because most of them have even worse video than an 8400.
