just finished a build after 2 weeks, and i really can't wait to start playing hehe .... just the issue of my custom portrait. i'm not too good with any kind of photo/graphic editing software.. the only things i know are resizing and flipping ans 'saving as ..'.
now i have a portrait ready (actually my pic i used in nwn1), and i have cut it and resized it to 128 x 128, and centered it, and saved it as 24b .tga format. but it has stuff in the background.... i'm wondering if i can cut out my pic and plop it onto the default background for nwn2 character portraits. and i always wondered how people cut off a guy's head and shoulders so cleanly from the original picture...
i've already been through a lot of online tutorials on 'how to customise ur own portraits for nwn2' but half the time they go on blabbering about advanced techniques to 'beautify' or give an effect to your pic that i really don't care about.... i seriously can't find what i'm looking for! all i wanna know is how to cut out my portrait neatly so i can place it on a matching nwn2 backdrop.
can someone please help me with this? i've ran an extensive google search on custom portraits, sopls. don't add a full tutorial link here cos i probably attempted to read it before this post, but unless the instructions r really specific and basic i don't think i can understand most of the terms/art language in them
and i don't wanna know how to resize, i wanna know how to cut a picture out cleanly
thanks in advance
how do u cut out a guy's head so cleanly for Custom Portraits

It's a learned skill. At least in my case it's something I learned through years of practice beginning with making my own custom Baldur's Gate portraits. My forum avatar here is an example. I rely on little more than IrfanView to resize images, and MS Paint to crop them.
I find keeping it simple works best. I locate or commission an image--preferably a large over a thousand pixels in height and width. Then I resize it. Then I crop it to the proper dimensions. It's important to use a larger base image because most of the quality is retained that way. If it's too small you risk a lot of finer details getting blurred out in a mess of pixels. Sadly that's all there is to it. Sometimes there's guesswork involved as I experiment with various dimensions and only discover after cropping that it looks off. Other times it's a smooth process. After creating hundreds of images it became second nature.
Are you using your NWN version of that portrait as a base? If so, I suggest combing the web to find an original image of that artwork and working from that. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

hey that's just it thanks. your forum avatar looks nice, cos there's nothing behind ur head. my portrait in nwn2 has some clouds and birds flying in the background. it looks very odd...
i meant i'm using my old pic i used in nwn, which was custom. but back then i didn't pay attention to the background, i just resized it to the various dimensions.
It does not look too nice in nwn2. this time round i'd like to cut my pic out and paste it on a default nwn2 backdrop (black or grey i'm not sure)... u know.. so it would look more like the default generated portrait. but i don't know how to do that. i know how to resize to make 128 by 128, and in fact it's already done, but i don't know how to blank out the surrounding colours around my character.
i got adobe photoshop i think, but i wonder why...lol// since i never used it

Ah. Well, in that case it's way beyond my ken. I guess you can take the portrait of an existing NWN2 character, remove their face using layers, and fill in the rest. That's way beyond anything I could do. Unfortunately you're usually stuck with the background you have. :/ It's why I always ask for, or find art without too much junk back there.

hmmm i c. no choice then.
i saw this guy in thieves' guild forum, here see this tutorial :-

i wonder how he did it. it looks really good. you can tell it's a custom picture, but he just cut it and stuck it really nicely (the picture with the white haired guy with scar on his face). uhm well i assume it is a custom pic, i haven't played throught the OC yet
too advanced for me i don't understand 90% of the stuff he's saying

Pull paint.net of the internet for free or GIMP and you can do as you please with the backdrop. Either by painting it out or isolating the bits of the image you want. To do what you want I would colour out the background to a single colour, you can then select your image or the background and cur it away leaving the bit you want.
It can be fussy but it's often worth the time spent.

how do i colour the areas around my head so accurately without touching my head? do i just enlarge and colour every single square or is there a another proper method ... sometimes i can't tell if one dot belongs to my character's head or to the background

It depends on the background. The tool I use has a paint feature that replaces one colour with another (looks like a tipping paints can) If you bacgorund it not too fussy you can use that. Otherwise I have just zoomed in and do it with a 2 pixel wide brush then a larger one further away from the image.
I've created a few simple Icons for my mods like this but the images are quite simple. I'm sure there are better ways of doing this but it has worked okay for me.

It's much easier with a Vorpal computer. Very rare.
