Plus, it gets kinda silly when you're walking around on freezing cold/boiling hot/acid vapor planets with somebody like Jack who's essentially half-naked.

will may be you can give them some thing less bikini cat suite thing will with jack i do see what u saying with her but her dlc outfit is fine and i can see with the freezing cold and acid vapor planets but for the boiling hot ones if i was wearing heavy looks hot armor i would hate being in the armor because i would be hotter then i all ready was if i was in something like jack wears
The armor is effectively a space suit. That means it has it's very own enviromental control unit. You'd be better off with your armor than with something like Jack wears.

It doesn't have to be big heavy armor but armor would be nice. Light armor in ME1 wasn't all that clunky, neither was medium come to think of it. I really hope they go back to the 3 styles of armor, be nice to have a bit more variety.
Variety? Three static armor models with different skin colors and progressive and boring stat boosts. The ME2-ME3 armor style offers more variety in both appearance and character attributes.

It also does a great job for the female charactes of saying please shoot me between the breasts, of exposing said mammary glands to the effects of hazardous enviroments and generally just playing to cheesecake. I don't really have a problem with cheesecake when appopriate, but in the middle of a firefight or when exposed to vacuum is the wrong place.

Except eventually people find the armor configuration that suits their play style and there's remarkably little reason to change; it's not like we're Iron Man where we set up a different combo for individual situations (we're never given enough info on a dry run to set it up even if it was necessary). This leads to a lot of Shepards looking pretty samey because 1) certain bonuses work universally (shields, health, cooldown cuts, etc.) and 2) the tech and biotic classes don't really differ in terms of mechanics leaving you with 3 kinds of Shepard: power, power combat, combat.. The same bonuses that optimize an Adept also do it for an Engineer. It also doesn't help that most of the differences between armor components are only really noticeable from the front and up close (an angle we don't get often durring gameplay).
Bringing back light, medium, and heavy armor with the current system means that you can have two Shepards with identical loadouts who still look different. I recognize they probably won't do it for ME3 but it'd be nice if in future games (or perhaps the multiplayer) we could go back to the different styles.

A cross between the ME and ME2 armor systems would be nice. Instead of just basic stat changes (shield strength, melee damage, etc.) like it was in ME2, each piece should have its own armor rating as well, kinda like the system that Skyrim has right now.

Abandoning the totally legit and facepalmingly obvious arguments about verisimilitude and plausibility for a moment, can I address the supposed "coolness" issue, where it's so very awesome to have squaddies with their own unique looks?
If "coolness" is what you're after, how can you possibly want the Jack/Samara/Miranda phenomenon? Jack can walk naked into a situation that Shepard has to bury himself in armor for like a little pansy. Does this not inherently make Shepard significantly less cool? I mean hey, it's just a bit of toxic air/flying bulletstorm/open vaccum. Jack can handle it in a pair of cargo pants and a half-inch ****** strap. But Big Bad Hero Shep has to wear a full-face mask and six inches of ablative plate?
If you want "coolness" then you need to let Shep get in on the action too. Put Sheploo in a thong and send him into combat and I guarantee ninety percent of the "PUT ON SOME GODDAMN ARMOR GODDAMN" complaints for squadmates will stop cold. I am just saying.

But seriously, why are we having this discussion? We're at war, which means things like bullets, nukes, near-death, and other such nasty is pretty much an everyday thing. Which says to me; yes, armor is very much appreciated, if not completely mandatory.
Which is why so many people flamed Bioware when we were introduced to "Ashely's" new look; not only did it conflict with her "I'm a woman in a man's world," tomboy/warrior personality, it also seemed that Bioware was forgetting that things like bikinis, catsuits, and thigh-high boots aren't going to offer much protection, (Sure, Casey's said that outfit's just one of many, but we still haven't seen anything better; as Nyoka pointed out on one of Ash's light armor variants, her cleavage was still there.
In short, yes, armor is completely necessary, because to wear anything else would be, quite literally, suicidal. Heavy armor isn't mandatory, because I can't see Mordin running around in something that looks like it was designed for Wrex, but armor that covers EVERYTHING up (That includes boobies, Bioware.) and comes with a fully sealed helmet, only makes logical sense.

2. It's consistent with the depiction of armed conflict in ME1. (Soldiers in shielded, armored spacesuits armed with computer-assisted railguns)
3. It subverts backwards video game logic regarding gender roles which dictate that men should appear big, buff, and manly, while women should reveal as much skin as possible.
4. It reinforces the protagonist's authority by making everyone else wear something similar to Shepard's armor. If Jack's biotics are enough to protect her, why can't a biotic Shepard charge into battle wearing that stylish James Bond tux, or the cocktail dress? Why is a dinky breather mask enough for Miranda, but not enough for Shepard?
5. It offers choice. Customization is a good thing in RPGs.

Why would you go into fire-battles in anything but the best protection-giving armor you can get?
Do you see soldiers going into warzones in casual clothing?
