So why is Hawke attacked in the beginning of MotA?

Cavril is the merchant from the Gallows (in the Prologue). Unless this is meant to be a different Cavril, I would imagine that his "family" isn't too happy with Hawke (who can intimidate the merchant or best his guards).
That makes sense if you sided with Athenril, but what about if you sided with Meeran?

hm okay.
Don't know why Cavril's family would get all pissy about him holding up his end of a bargain. Or why he/they would spend a ****load of gold hiring Antivan Crows over.... 2 gold.
so.... it actually doesn't make as much sense as I thought it did. For Cavril anyway. Friedrich actually makes sense.

Maybe that setback was just the first of many that eventually drove him out of business. Maybe it galled him that a "dog-lord" robbed him of his cash and (depending on the act) went on to become one of the most influential people in the city.caradoc2000 wrote...

Incidentally, Aveline is the one that threatens the money out of him in all my playthroughs. His anger seems misdirected.
Ms. "Care to step in here?" Hawke makes Aveline do it, though. I guess it's the thought that counts.

Off the top of my head, it was something to the effect of "send him the regards of Lord Friedrich's family".

I usually take Cavril's money and kill Friedrich. I'm surprised that they both didn't try to take out my Hawke. It would have been more fun that way.
Well, technically speaking, taking Cavrill's bribe allows him to stay in business.

Interesting. I guess it does depend on who you sided with to get into the city.

Ambushes without context.
Why does EVERY cave I travel through (all two of them) have reanimated Corpses that attack me? Is the entire veil surrounding Kirkwall completely sundered or something?!
And speaking of that, WHY ARE THERE GIANT SPIDERS IN THIS GAME?
Ignoring the fact that its so completely stereotypical of "dungeon crawling and level grinding" its insulting (which makes me think they did it on purpose), THE BLIGHT IS OVER. These spiders shouldnt be giant sized anymore because the Taint (I refuse to call it the Corruption) from the Darkspawn is no longer an issue, especially since the Blight occured in Ferelden, not the Free Marches. Other than the Deep Roads, there are never spiders and darkspawn in the same areas.
And thats another thing; I'm glad to see my decision to spare the Architect was rendered virtually pointless.
Architect: "Since you spared me, I can help keep my brethren in check"
Nathaniel: "We were told there would be no darkspawn here, but looks like they were wrong. Oh well."
Me: RAGEQUIT.

The taint isn't what makes the spiders gigantic. It just makes them corrupted Spiders, in that they become ghouls.
It certainly adds to their size, but it doesn't change a normal spider into a gigantic one on its own.
Giant spiders tend to appear in old ruins and other places where the Veil has become thin because of magical disturbances or a great number of deaths. In such places, spirits and demons pass into the world of the living and attempt to take control over living beings, spiders among them. Not all scholars accept this explanation for the presence of these beasts, however. Some claim that the thinning Veil allows magic to "leak" from the Fade, tainting such creatures as these spiders to transform into larger and more potent creatures then they ever would become naturally. While such spiders are known to possess powerful poisons and the ability to fling their webs at opponents in combat, studies of them have been few and the full range of their abilities are unknown.
Corrupted Spiders are giant arachnids which grow in the depths of the Deep Roads, and feed on numerous species of large bats. When the Deep Roads were lost to the darkspawn, they started feeding on genlocks, and their numbers began to grow exponentially. Some moved up to make their lairs in surface forests, but most remain underground, close to their blight-tainted meals which make them larger and fiercer than they have ever been.
And thats another thing; I'm glad to see my decision to spare the Architect was rendered virtually pointless.

Give the Architect some credit man. He's probably working on all of Ferelden first to awaken the Darkspawn, and that involves tunneling around collapsed caverns.
Scouting reports aren't always 100% accurate. Things change. When did they receive that report? It's at least a week's travel to get into the Deep Roads area Hawke was in. Perhaps the Darkspawn advanced to that area in that week.

Umm, yeah. Yeah, that's the dark secret of the city as revealed in the Enigma of Kirkwall codexes: the Veil has been permanently rendered razor-thin all around Kirkwall.

There are plenty of possibilities why that section of the Deep Roads was infested with darkspawn. Perhaps they mysterious allies who provided the Wardens with information were mistaken, or maybe they outright lied. Maybe the Architect set up that ambush hoping to capture more Wardens. Or maybe that particular band were among the last pockets of "unawakened" darkspawn.

My gripe isn't that Hawke gets ambushed (Bioware seem to like opening their DLCs with combat. Just once I'd like to start up one of these modules and discover a lively dance, or a drinking festival. Or an orgy. But alas, no). What I dislike is that Hawke is ambushed by Crows. Considering how awesome they're meant to be, not to mention how expensive, and What A Big Deal It Is to have a contract on your head because they just keep coming until they manage to kill you, it feels like a stupid move that wasn't motivated by much thought. There have to be more assassin guilds in Thedas than just the House of Crows. Cheaper ones that have an excuse to try yet another stupid frontal assault.
If our invincible PCs started mowing down Grey Wardens by the dozen, they'd come across as pretty pathetic too.

Yeah...sorry, Sifr1449. There's context for just about every ambush in the game, if you read the codices. Including the one at the start of MotA.

I'd like to see a party Hawke throws being crashed myself.
Also, not all DLCs open with combat. Legacy, Warden's Keep, and The Stone Prisoner didn't open up with combat.

I agree that the Crows being the ones to be hired is just..... eh.
Why couldn't it have been an Orlesian group of assassins hired by Prosper (but this wouldn't be revealed to the player until much, much later)?
