So I just recently started playing the original, BG1 and I am loving it. I have gotten far into the game, chapter 5 to be specific, and had a bit of a glitch. The game froze up during a cinematic and I was forced to use ctrl + alt + delete to close it. After that, every time I try to start the game it says please insert disc. The disc is in the correct drive, it has been there ever since I started playing. Same drive I used for Dragon Age II as well. There were a couple times I got it to go through and it gave me "data removed from disc, must insert disc 5". I don't know why it would ask me for disc 5 as I have ONLY installed the original BG1. I have not installed Tales of the Sword Coast yet, nor Bhaal or Shadows of Amn. Why is it causing me so many problems?
I read about similar issues on other boards and most of them suggested uninstalling/reinstalling but I REALLY do not want to lose my progress and character data. I got too far to start over. PLEASE HELP!
Data Removed From Drive

I use windows xp professional as I never really liked vista when it came out and I've yet to encounter software xp cannot handle. And yes, it is installed on my C drive, as with all other games I install. Plenty of disc space there too.

The bottom line is that your game is missing a file that it needs to continue… since it crashed at a cinematic point then I’m inclined to think it’s a video file (possibly due to a scratched disc) but there are other causes including file type conflicts i.e. both Realplayer & Quicktime want to be the one to play the file for instance.
You haven’t provided enough information to really narrow it down so we can only suggest the basics;
1. If you didn’t do a complete install then copy/paste your save folder and try to un/reinstall the game.
2. You have not mentioned mods/ patches so I can only assume you have the correct patch and no mods… if that’s not the case then remove all mods and patch your game.
3. If your disc/ drive is suspect then perhaps it’s time to visit GoG.com… $10 is the normal price for Bg1 (with Totsc and fully patched) but they sometimes have specials.

It sounds as though you have not got any mods running, so it would be easy to reinstall your game. As ussnorway says you won't lose your saved game when doing this (you're given the option whether you want to delete saved games before uninstalling. though you can copy the save elsewhere anyway). The problems with reinstallation occur when you change the mod setup you're using and try to continue.
I also agree with ussnorway that it sounds like you may have a damaged disc. Before reinstalling make sure you clean the disc in case the problem is dirt rather than an actual scratch.
