I just entered the Underdark and soon after attacked the 6 drow a little to the north. The battle moved around a large area because of my Boots of Speed + hide in shadows + backstab strategy. Unfortunately, the battle came within sight of the Svirfneblin at the bridge leading to their village. His dialogue triggered but his circle then turned red. The other Svirfneblin guards also turned against me, but I was able to sneak past and speak with the leader, innkeeper, and Dagglefodd. Later, the hostile svirfneblin moved within the village, and everyone turned hostile.

Is it possible to appease them, or will I have to do this the hard way (kill them all to get the gem)? It's frustrating the the Svirfneblin turn hostile just because I fight some drow. That should not happen.

SoA tends to be unforgiving about things like this. It's like using a fireball in Athkatla. Chances are you'll kill an innocent and all of a sudden your Rep has taken a 10 point hit. Be prepared for Adalon being a little pissed when you show up after having slaughtered her Svirf friends.

You could try going invisible to sneak by the hostiles and try killing the demon and getting the gem the usual way. Don't know how it will work out with the door-guard and leader both hostile, but you never know, their dialogues could trigger anyway.

Adalon may be a bit disappointed that you killed all her friends, but there will be no repercussions.

I think the problem for the svirfneblins was simply that the drow rule that part of the underdark. In order not to be wiped out, the gnomes have to prove their alliance to them, and if you start killing drow in their sight, they have little choice but to regard you as their enemy.

I suspect it's a side-effect of the game engine rather than developer intent. I had a similar thing while playing Tactics Ilyich, I retreated so far that I came in sight of the dryads, who also went hostile.

Humanoid Taifun's explanation is plausible from an RP perspective, but it's actually a scripting bug rather than a game engine bug - many "humanoid" creatures share the same shout script, which turns their allies hostile if one is attacked, but can also turn neutral characters hostile if by chance they are assigned the same "shout number".

This is another reason not to memorize fear spells, enemies fleeing between areas is a common cause of this bug.
