Considering you can only have 4 people (including yourself) in the party. It's good enough.

May i ask why? You can only have 3 with you at a time.

Why? There are so many combinations of possible team compositions, banter and companion-quests that I´d guess it´d occupy you for quite some time until you experienced every dialogue line, quest etc.
I´d rather have a few detaliled NPCs than a dozen more shallow ones.

I'd rather have 7 fleshed out companions than the 25 or so that where in Baldur's Gate but together still had less personality than a rock. One concern might be that your party build might be pretty limited (ie. No four man templar squad tearing it up), but it might be worth keeping in mind that Bioware designed the encounters from the party at hand, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

This.
And I think that, contrary to the previous Bioware games (except BG), there's no hardcoded limit to how many followers you can actually have, so people should be able to mod in new ones without getting rid of some of the old ones as well.

So actually there are NINE companions, one more, but mentioning this one would be spoilerific.
Shale and Dog do have just as much banter as the other companions, and different skill-sets, and are just as effective in battle as the others.
ALL characters seem to have a very fleshed out personality, their own quests, storylines, agendas and motivations. Four of them are romanceable.
Some can even be killed at the first meeting, or ignored. Ergo there is a high replayability.
Say, you don't put Sten into your party because your PC considers him dangerous, or you kill Zevran at your first meeting, and with doing that you loose two potential partymembers whose banters, conversations and personal quests you will not experience in this playthrough, but maybe in another...
My point is that not the number of companions counts, but the way how they were implemented, and how well the existing ones are written. NWN2 had twelve companions (including the construct), but all of them were not really fleshed out at best, and horribly done at worst.
Maybe you should play the game first before complaining about it....

I said it was a little disappointing there isn't more not that i prefer quantity over quality so stow the arrogance Yenaquai your making asumptions out of nothing.

I kinda wished there were more companion variety rather than quantity. Now, we have male warriors and female mages but no vice versa.

Some of those Euro screens look to show other people in the party. I thought they might have been mission specific or something though.

Do I? Sorry, if you got the feeling I came off sounding arrogant, my point was only that maybe the way the existing companions are implemented in the game makes up the fact that there are "only" nine of them, and that it might be a bit too early to feel disappointed about the number of them without seeing them in action.
No harm meant, nor did I wanted to come off as arrogant. Sorry if that's the case.

No problem. I'm hoping the companions are as good as they seem to be.
